Sea Cadet Corps Values

Whilst being a cadet gives many benefits, membership does bring responsibilities. Cadets are encouraged to live up to the SCC values:

COMMITMENT, LOYALTY, DISCIPLINE, INTEGRITY, COURAGE, TEAMWORK

These values help all the cadets gain their full potential from their time in the SCC.

Sections in the unit

Our unit accommodates both male & female cadets; we fully endorse equal opportunities.
There are 3 main sections to our unit; these sections together with their own dedicated members of staff comprise T.S BOSCAWEN.

SEA CADETS (12 – 18 yrs)
This section makes up the largest part of our unit; the training is based on Naval traditions. These cadets have the opportunity to take part in many activities both in the classroom, field and on the water. Training nights – Monday and Friday

MARINE CADETS (13 – 18 yrs)
A much smaller section with its own dedicated marine staff and learning environment. The training is much more biased towards the traditions of the Royal Marines, though certain Naval aspects are taught. The training takes part in the classroom and on outside practical exercises.
Training nights – Tuesday and Thursday

JUNIOR CADETS (10 – 12)
A large section accommodating cadets of the younger years. This section is taught as a much more simplified version of the SCC syllabus in a more relaxed atmosphere.
Training nights – Friday only

Syllabus

1st Class Training

Once joining as either a Sea cadet or Marine Cadet, you will be given a task book. This task book is compulsory for all rates and holds the key to your promotion within the corps. As you would expect the task books get progressively harder as you advance but with help and encouragement you can achieve you potential.

2nd Class Training

This is the more 'hands on' part of the training and is taught alongside the task books. You can choose what subjects interest you the most and progress with them, to the top, gaining qualifications along the way.

The first 2 specialisations you learn will be compulsory for all 'new entries'. These comprise of basic seamanship and first aid. These qualifications give all cadets a firm knowledge base, ready for advancement from the 'new entry' rank, which they joined as.

Activities

Cadets also get the opportunity to undertake and gain qualifications in various Proficiencies. Boating proficiency qualifications are all certified by either national or international bodies such as the Royal Yachting Association and British Canoe Union and as such are recognised by other organisations outside of the Sea Cadet Corps.

TS Boscawen is able to offer access to a range of supervised training and activities which includes the following:

Swimming, Basic First Aid, Sailing (Inshore & Offshore), Engineering (Mech & Elec),
Pulling (Rowing), Cooking & Stewarding,
Power Boats (In & Offshore), Admin & Stores Accounting,
Canoeing, Shooting (Seniors only),
Windsurfing, Ceremonial Drill & Piping,

What Happens Next?

Interested but unsure on what will happen?

Well every first time experience is likely to make you feel nervous and anxious. However we are here to help and we fully understand what you would be going through.
Please make sure you contact the unit beforehand to agree a suitable time for a unit tour.

The first time you attend the unit you should arrive with a parent or guardian for around 1900 on either the Tuesday or Friday. Once the unit has been opened a member of staff will be on duty to greet you and show you to the ships office.
Here you will meet our friendly Administration Officer who will clear up and questions you may have. A P10 form will be issued to your parent and a start date will be proposed and agreed (there is no commitment to join). A unit tour will then commence with an available member of the instructional staff, with break and biscuits at stand-easy. The second part of the night will be taken with a class under instruction; you and your parent will sit in on one of the many classes on offer to get a feel for the teaching and environment. The night finishes around 2100, and any questions you may have can be cleared up with the Evening colours members of staff.

Costs

As the unit is not funded by the MOD we are responsible for all services e.g. Gas/Water/Electricity and although the MOD owns the building we are responsible for its upkeep.
To enable the unit to be successful we ask for a small donation of £2 per week. The Donation is asked for from week 3 onwards and paid every Friday, Juniors are asked to donate £1 on a Friday.
