2010 National Combined Regatta
Stonehaven's Sea Cadets returned home triumphant yesterday after a terrific performance at the Corps National Combined Regatta held at the London ExCel on Saturday.
Previous successes at earlier District and Area events and hard training since April including early morning, every evening and weekend training sessions gave the youngsters, aged between 12 and 17, the opportunity to represent the Northern Area (Scotland & North England) against cadets from throughout the UK at the Corps Blue Riband event.
Stonehaven Unit hold a proud record of having qualified for and competed at this level every year since 1960, unmatched by any Unit in the Corps.
The majority of the 20 cadets from Stonehaven returned north with medals. The Unit's junior boys boatpulling crew retained The Ridgewell Trophy winning it for a record 11th time in the Unit's history.
The Boathandling (Oars) team claimed The Mitchell Trophy, named after former Stonehaven Unit Commanding Officer LtCdr Alan Mitchell MBE RN, for the third time since the event started in 2002.
The Stonehaven Unit Boys Open Boatpulling team who were defending their title won in 2009 had to be satisfied with Bronze this year.
These results further enhances Stonehaven Unit's reputation as the most successful boating Unit in the UK.
The full results were: Boat Pulling Competitions
Boys Junior (The Ridgewell Trophy) 1st - Northern (Stonehaven)
Girls Junior 1st - South West (Port Talbot), 4th Northern (Peterhead)
Boys Open (The Hornblower Trophy) 1st - Eastern (Worksop), 3rd Northern (Stonehaven)
Girls Open 1st - South West (Fishguard), 2nd equal Northern (Dalbeattie / Greenock) and London (Sunbury)
Overall Boat Pulling Trophy (The Dawson Trophy) - 1st South West, 2nd Northern

Offshore Yachts - 'Tattie' Holidays!
During the first week of the school 'tattie' holidays, week commencing 9th October 2010, there are 10 spaces available on the offshore yachts i.e. both yachts.
During the week sailing is conducted around the Solent area (English Channel) sailing from and returning to Gosport. The opportunity to gain SCC and RYA qualifications is available.
This voyage is open to all cadets aged 13 years 6 months and above. Due to the continued generous sponsorship of the Robertson Trust the cost for your travel to & from Gosport, food, accommodation and a week onboard is a bargain £140.
If we get enough Stonehaven cadets interested in sailing offshore during the tattie holidays then we could book one yacht or both to ourselves as a Unit booking.
Interested? Then please register your names and pay monies to the Unit Training Officer asap so we can book as required.

Cheap as chips!
Two fabulous offers to you :-)
1) Your Commanding Officer is feeling all generous and as such has decided, that during 2010 only, he will fund course fee's for any cadet attending (AND PASSING) a Petty Officer Cadet Advancement and/or First Class Specialisation course held at a National Sea Cadet Training Centre.
This will mean a saving to you of £60 per course. Watch out for the 2010/2011 training programme to be published.
2) Due to the continued generous sponsorship of the Robertson Trust, any cadet from the Northern Area wishing to go offshore on the SCC fleet in 2010 can do so for a subsidised cost of £100 per voyage. This is a saving to you of £140 from the full £240 voyage fee. The £100 includes your week onboard, all food & accommodation and travel to/from the ship - exceptional value for money.
The offshore programme is on this post and on Unit noticeboards so if you want to go offshore I suggest you book ASAP.
Fabulous opportunity for a once in a lifetime experience.

Adults - Get involved!
Calling all adults!
We greatly value our adult volunteers, without whom the organisation could not function, and support and train them, whatever their previous experience and skills.
There are opportunities for both teaching the Cadets in the enormous variety of subjects that we offer, and also supporting their activities via Parents’ and Supporters’ Associations and Unit Management Committees. We need administrators and DIY experts; people willing to run the snack bar and others to drive the minibus; canoeists and IT enthusiasts. If you’ve got a skill, we can find an outlet for it. And you can even pick up some new skills and qualifications yourself along the way!
The financial support that we receive from the Royal Navy enables us to offer our uniformed volunteers a number of days' training pay each year.
It doesn't matter whether you’ve got previous experience dealing with young people or not - we're just looking for willing volunteers who want to be part of the team and enjoy the satisfaction of seeing Cadets develop and mature. As you’d expect, all our volunteers are rigorously vetted.
Contact Unit Commanding Officer Kevin Morris on 01569 762918 or email stonehavenseacadets@hotmail.com for further information. We look forward to you joining the team.

Replacement Safetyboat Appeal
Sea Cadets will be high and dry if cash for boat runs out THE most successful sea cadet corps in Scotland is facing a season on dry land if it cannot raise the funds for a new safety boat. A safety boat used by the Stonehaven Sea Cadets has been decommissioned and the group is desperately trying to raise funds to replace it before the summer season.
Commanding officer Kevin Morris said the unit has used the same type of safety boat for more than 40 years, but the Ministry of Defence has now deemed them unsuitable.
Because the sea cadets is not a pre-service organisation, like the army or air corps, the MoD will not fund a replacement. The unit of 40 cadets and 15 juniors has been fundraising all year to get the £19,000 they need for a new vessel. With £16,500 already raised, they are within grasping distance of the total but time is running out.
To have a new boat by May, the start of the training season, it must be ordered next month.
The group has already received donations from the Lloyds TSB Foundation, international companies and the local community council, as well as parents and residents.
Stonehaven Sea Cadets have continually represented Scotland, North-east England and Northern Ireland in national boatwork competitions over the last 48 years.
“I am confident we will get there one way or the other,” said Mr Morris. “We might have to put some things to the side. Our number one priority is replacing this old safety boat. “We are going to lose cadets and adults if we cannot get them afloat when we want to get them afloat.”
To donate to the corps, contact Mr Morris on 01569 762918 or e-mail stonehavenseacadets@hotmail.com

and Sir say's!
Dear Kevin and all the people and cadets associated with TS CARRON, It was kind of you to mention that I had been awarded CVO in the New Years Honours List and thank you for your congratulations. I hardly expected it as I did not believe that any further recognition was awarded to Lord Lieutenants who had served less than 10 years. The Appointment as Lord Lieutenant was an honour in itself. Both Valerie and I are delighted and it was on top of all the pleasure that we had during the time and meeting so many interesting people. Regards for a very happy 2008. John Smart.
|
Congratulations Sir!
Hearty congratulations to the Unit Vice President, Mr. John Smart, on his recent award in the New Years Honours List. The following is an excerpt from the Press & Journal (29 December 2007):
The Queen's former representative in Kincardineshire is made a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order.
John Smart served as the Lord Lieutenant of Kincardineshire between 1999 and 2007, before handing the title over to Carol Kinghorn in August.
The Lord Lieutenant represents the Queen in the area, and during his period of office Mr Smart officiated at many public and private events in the area, taking a particular interest in youth organisations.
Mr Smart had been a deputy lord lieutenant since 1993, and has lived at Edzell for more than 40 years.
A former soldier in the Black Watch, he was a member of the Queen's Bodyguard for Scotland, the Royal Company of Archers, for three decades.
Mr Smart was also chairman of the Scottish-American community relations committee at RAF Edzell until 1993.
The 75-year-old replaced Viscount Arbuthnott, who held the title of Lord Lieutenant of Kincardineshire for 22 years.

All the thoughts and prayers of us all at Stonehaven Unit are with his wife Mary and the family at this sad time.
A massive loss to the Corps and the Sea Cadet family.
