A group of Merseyside Sea Cadets have been reunited with their stolen boat - after a quick-thinking leader spotted it being driven past him on the M62.

Kenny Griffiths was driving towards Liverpool on Saturday afternoon when he spotted the rigid inflatable boat, which had been stolen in April.

Mr Griffiths turned around, rang police and followed the trailer to a street in Salford 40 miles (64km) away.

Officers arrived moments later and arrested the driver.

The sea cadets unit, a charity based in Litherland, had given up hope of recovering the boat, which was stolen along with 18 kayaks, paddles and lifejackets in April.

Despite an appeal on BBC Radio Merseyside, no trace of the stolen items - valued at thousands of pounds - were found, until Saturday afternoon.

I had a grin so big you could have tied it at the top of my head

Kenny Griffiths, Sea Cadets commander

Mr Griffiths, the unit's commanding officer, told the BBC he was "absolutely amazed" when he spotted the boat near the Rocket roundabout, Childwall.

He alerted police and began tailing the Land Rover down the M62, which eventually pulled over after leaving the motorway in Winton, Salford.

Five police cars turned up minutes later and a man was arrested.

Mr Griffiths was able to produce a key to a lock attached to the boat which proved ownership.

"It was quite an interesting day - I felt like I'd won the lottery," Mr Griffiths said.

"I just happened to be where I was - I'm not often in that area - so the chance of me actually seeing it was just unbelievable.

"I had a grin so big you could have tied it at the top of my head."

Theft probe

The boat has now been sent back to Sea Cadets headquarters to be inspected for damage.

"Until we can act get it back and get my boat engineer to have a look at it we don't know what sorts of problems it has has, but it should still be okay."

Mr Griffiths said his Sea Cadets, who have spent the last five months without a boat, were going to be "absolutely delighted".

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "A man was arrested on suspicion of theft and handling stolen goods.

"He was kept in custody by GMP before the inquiry was taken over by Merseyside Police."

Area Combined Regatta

Liverpool District as a whole had an excellent regatta up in Southport. Huyton cleaned up in the Pulling, Southport unit also had some success in the canoeing.

The ten cadets who represented the unit aquitted themselves well. AC Ben Casey trounced all comers by winning the Junior boys final by at least 2 boat lengths, POC Mark Christie was unlucky to finish 3rd due to some blocking at the begining of the Senior boys final. Congratulations to AC Hannah Francis, OC Andy Smith, MC2 Billy Norris, AC Mark Flynn, Cdt Lauren Johnston who have qualified for the National Team selection weekend at TS Palatine.

District Pulling

The recent district pulling competition threw up no suprises for the winning teams with Huyton with Roby taking the majority of the trophies, more suprisingly however is where Seftons boys teams finished, the Juniors finished fourth and the Seniors finished third. Well Done

Unit Burglary

In the early hours of Monday 21st April 2008, Sefton was hit by yet another break-in. The perpetrators managed to breach the main gate, break off the boat shed doors and enter several other outbuildings. The following items were taken:

  • RIB on trailer
  • Canoe trailer and every Kayak we had inc paddles and spraydecks
  • All our buoyancy aids

Mercury Block, previously the Engineering training area, was breached but nothing taken.

We would like to take this opportunity to let people know that we will, as always, carry on regardless. This burglary will considerably hinder the beginning of the waterborne training season for our young people, and would urge anyone with any information to contact the Unit or their local Police station.

A note to whoever has our equipment - thank you for causing such upset and loss to the already disadvantaged young people of South Sefton - we hope you can live with yourselves.

    Quiz Night

The units Quiz night fundraiser had an excellent turn out with around 45 ex cadets, staff, committee and parents attending to support the unit.
The originals (Steve Kirkham, Mark Rose, Simon Kelly, Lianne Nugent-Murphy, Sharon Boyd, Sarah Dixon, Stephanie and Neil Hugo) won the quiz by just a few points from Griff's Team headed by two other former COs.
The unit would like to thank everyone who attended and help raise over £200 for the unit's rapidily depleting bank account.

    Sefton's snipers

The units' sharpshooters took part in the District shooting competition at the end of March, and shot their way to victory. Congratulations to Marine cadets DeRoos, Nichols,Maguire and Leading Cadet Christie for keeping a cool head and a sharp eye.

    Sefton's success continues

Sefton's Junior boys football team did the unit proud, with some fine performances on the way to a final rematch with Wallasey unit, with whom they had previously met in the league stages and earned a 3-3 draw. The final, however, didn't quite go their way as the Walli inched out a 2-0 victory. Lauren "Thunderbolt" Johnson on a 1 day loan to Southport Unit also won a silver medal with Southport's junior girls team. Well done to you all.

Sefton Bag the Medals at District Football

TS STARLING continued their run of sporting success on Sunday 6th January, when all four of our teams came away with medals:

    Junior Boys - GOLD

    Senior Girls - SILVER

BZ and the very best of luck to the Junior Boys at the Area Competition at the end of the month.

    Sefton Victorious at Area Netball!

A great big BZ to the Sefton Girls! Victory is ours after a nail-biting final match which saw some great defending and teamwork.

The cheers of 'Red Army, Red Army' will be heard throughout the Unit well into the New Year.

Congratulations to all who entered, and yet another trophy to polish.........

    The Dominic Salzano Memorial Garden

    Cadets Recreate Memorial Garden
A forgotten garden built in memory of an ex-Sefton sea cadet killed on a Marine training exercise is being restored to its former glory.

Thanks to £1,000 from the Community Foundation for Merseyside’s Green Machine Fund and oil and gas company BHP Billiton, Sefton Sea Cadets have set to work replanting and rebuilding the Field Lane based garden in Litherland.

The cadets decided to take action after the garden, built as a tribute to former cadet and Royal Marines Lance Corporal Dominic Salzano, fell into disrepair and was repeatedly targeted by vandals. Dominic's brother Ged was also a STARLING Cadet, and is now Colonel Ged Salzano Royal Marines - former Commanding Officer of 42 Cdo Royal Marines and a regular visitor to the Unit.

Using the cash to fund a new memorial plaque, seating, shrubs and paint for a mural, the cadets will hold a special public remembrance day once the work is finished to celebrate the makeover.

“This is a really significant project for the cadets to get involved with and will ultimately help improve the look and facilities for everyone in the local area.”Ken Griffiths, Commanding Officer
    Sefton Sea Cadets

“It's essential to encourage people to take action and help make improvements to their local environment. By regenerating this memorial garden, the cadets will create a new sanctuary for the public to use.”Joan Ford, Grants Officer
    Community Foundation for Merseyside

BHP Billiton has so far invested £2,000 in the Green Machine initiative to support groups planning environmental improvement projects, including those that tackle pollution, aid recycling and that green up urban areas, in the Sefton area.

“We’re delighted to support the cadets with this unique and well planned regeneration project. As a company, we strive to support environmental initiatives that make a sustainable difference to the area.”Cara Bostock, BHP Billiton
