Daniel Jeffers joins the Navy
On Friday 12th March Cadets and Staff from TS Royal George travelled to support former PO Cdt Daniel Jeffers at his Passing Out Parade. Catching the 0230hrs Red Funnel ferry, the journey took us to Torpoint, Cornwall home of HMS Raleigh (stopping off for a much needed breakfast at Den and John's Cafe the home of sister and brother in law of Mrs Elcome). We joined Raleigh and were shown a DVD presentation in the theatre of all the activities Dan and his division would have undertaken. The prizes were awarded and we think Dan won the prize for the loudest cheer when he went up to receive his epaulets!! A tour of the Seamanship and safety and rescue classes were next on the agenda. After a buffet lunch, we then saw the Parade addressed by Mrs Mary Fagan JP, the Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire. Daniel joins HMS Collingwood on Monday to continue his training and specialisation. We wish him well for a future that he surely deserves. WELL DONE DAN!!

Remembering the D Day Heroes
Two staff members and three Cadets from Ryde Sea Cadets, TS Royal George, joined fellow representatives from Southern Area Sea Cadets (from Eastbourne, Dover, Kent and Jersey) to take part in the 65 Anniversary of D Day held at Arromanches. The trip was run over four days and the Sea Cadets were part of a Tri Service contingent including Army and Air Cadets. The Cadets and Staff all camped at Arromanches (just above Gold Beach). In the evenings Cadets witnessed a search light passing over the remains of the Mulberry Harbour and heard an air raid siren. Music from Glen Miller and Vera Lynn also played in the background during the evenings, with a display of fireworks to round the events of the day off. The Cadets took part in all the commemorations starting at the Ranville Cemetery (having passed over the famous Pegasus Bridge to get there). This first ceremony was particularly poignant for Mrs Elcome (Vice Chair Lady of Royal George) as her father Arthur Beacham had served in 6 Airborne (Devonshire Regiment) on D Day. Arthur’s Regiment had been part of the glider battalion who landed on Sword Beach and fought their way by land in order to support the troops who had landed by glider earlier in the campaign. The ceremony at Ranville saw a parachute jump to the drop zone at Pegasus Bridge together with a fly past of a Lancaster, Hurricane and Spitfire. Mrs Elcome laid a copy of the prayer for the Airborne Services carried by her father on D Day at the graveside of a 19 year old member of the Devonshire Regiment who never returned.
The Cadets took part in services at the Bayeux Cathedral and Bayeux Cemetery which included Prince Charles, the French and British Prime Ministers and the American President. The final parade was for the D Day Veterans themselves at Arromanches, and although the weather was unkind, the feeling of great admiration, pride and memories for the Cadets who took part, will serve as a baton to hand the memory of these great men who they met and befriended.
A Tri Service wreath was laid at the British War Cemetery at Hermanville (close to Sword Beach) by Ryde Sea Cadets in memory of those who trained on the Isle of Wight and who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Cadets to Join Veterans on D-Day Parade
3 Cadets and 2 adult volunteers from TS Royal George, Ryde Sea Cadets are travelling to Arromanches, France in June to take part in the 65th Anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy on 6th June 1944. They join around 500 Cadets and 100 adult volunteers from all Cadet Services (Air, Army and Sea) from across the United Kingdom. At the invitation of the Normandy Veteran Association (NVA) they will accompany some 500 veterans for this final commemoration to be organised by the NVA. The Cadets will be parading alongside the veterans at three services of commemoration to be held at Coleville Montgomery, Bayeux Commonwealth War Cemetery and Arromanches during 5th and 6th June. During the final ceremony at Arromanches the veterans will charge the cadets: "You have have heard of and seen the sites of June 1944 and the bravery and sacrifice of so many friends. These events made the future and life which you have enjoyed. Please always remember these things and tell the story as often as you can" A representative from each cadet force will respond: "I appreciate what you and your friends did for me and I promise never to forget your bravery and sacrifice" The Cadet forces have received generous support from Patrick Jardin, Mayor of Arromanches, who has provided land and facilities for a temporary campsite for the cadets.
