Scaling Dam Sailing Club Open Day 2010

On the 2nd May 2010 Redcar Sea Cadets supported Scaling Dam Sailing Club at their annual Open Day. With Scaling Dam Sailing Club being Redcar Units boating station the cadets were very much at home on and around the water. The cadets provided a meet and greet service to members of the public and assisted in the smooth running of the car parking. Other cadets assisted in the management of the buoyancy aids whilst others circulated to ensure everyone knew what was going on and where they had to be. This left just enough time for cadets to relax and enjoy the day in between duties. PO Tony McQuade, the Units Boats Officer said, “The day ran like clockwork the cadets were excellent ambassadors of the Sea Cadets Corps proving very knowledgeable and most of all welcoming.” The Units CO S/Lt (SCC) Mick Williams RNR described how the Sea Cadets enjoy such a great relationship with the sailing club who allow the storage of their boats and equipment and use of the water every Monday and Thursday. The Sailing Clubs Commodore Mr Dave White gave praise to the professionalism of the cadets and thanked them for what was a very well attended and enjoyable event.

Two Redcar Sea Cadets Sail to Sucess

Lewis Williams and Adam Enderwick (both aged 18) have become the first Sea Cadets to achieve a level 2 BTEC First Diploma in Public Services through Redcar Sea Cadets. This national BTEC award is the culmination of all their work and achievements within the Sea Cadet Corps and was a proud moment for Lewis and Adam who were both awarded a Distinction (equivalent to 4 GCSE’s at A*).

Redcar Sea Cadets Sail to Holy Island, Lindisfarne

Cadets prepare for their challenge

Redcar Sea Cadets undertook a Sponsored Sail on the evening of Monday 14th July 2008. The aim was to sail the equivalent distance from Redcar to Whitby, 25 miles. With a fleet of 6 boats each boat covered an incredible 10 miles therefore the fleet covered 60 miles the equivalent of Redcar to Holy Island, Lindisfarne, in Northumbria, by sea.

This outstanding achievement took place at Scaling Dam Sailing Club where the cadets can be seen getting ready for their challenge. With a selection of single handed and double handed boats all cadets had the opportunity to take part.

The money raised will go towards the purchase of a Laser Pico sailing dinghy.

Enrolment

On Monday 14th July 2008 New Entry Nicholas was enrolled into Redcar Sea Cadet Unit. This marked a first for Redcar Unit as it took place in the field at Scaling Dam Sailing Club in the presence of his family and members of the Unit Management Committee.

Redcar Life Boat Flag Day 15/06/08

Redcar Sea Cadets were proud to assist the Redcar Life Boat crew at their flag day on Saturday 15th June 2008 raising money on behalf of the Life Boat.
The day was highlighted with a number of demonstrations of sea rescues involving both the Redcar Life Boats, Hartlepool inshore and off shore life boats and an RAF Sea King helicopter. Following a number of transfers between the Life Boats and helicopter it was a guess to see if all the right crews ended on the right craft.
An exciting end to the day came when the helicopter pilot was brought ashore on the Redcar Life Boat presented with a gift and winched from the shore.

The day was not all hard work as the cadets relaxing enjoying the famous Redcar Lemon Top with Hartlepool's off shore Life Boat relaxing in the back ground.

Redcar forces cadets are all poppy appeal heroes

YOUNG people showed their respect for the services by raising thousands of pounds for the Royal British Legion.

Each year, Army, Navy and air cadets in Redcar compete to see who can raise most money in the run-up to Poppy Day.

And this year, they surpassed themselves, collecting a record-breaking £4,177.

It was a particularly good year for the Army cadets who, by collecting £1,912, reclaimed the Green Howards Trophy for the most raised.

There was success too for sea cadets, Cadet Adam Enderwick, 16, and Ordinary Cadet Brendan Lovell, 15, both pictured above, of TS Zetland, whose £309 was the most raised by a pair and earns them the Kevin Smith Poppy Trophy - named after a former Poppy Appeal organiser.

Redcar Royal British Legion secretary and parade organiser, Eric Howden, said: “Not only do they collect money for the appeal, they volunteer in their own time to go to all the cemeteries in Redcar and place a wooden poppy on the war graves, and graves of all known ex-servicemen or women there.

“They are a credit not just to their detachments, but to their families and we thank each and every one of them.”

Dave Blissett, Redcar RBL’s Poppy Appeal organiser, added: “It has been a tremendous effort from these young people who have gone out of their way to try as hard as they can.”

Staff Promotion

Trainee Instructor Brian Fish has been promoted into uniform as PPO (SCC). Brain continues as Starboard Divisional Officer and the Health and Safety coordinator.

Two new benches unveiled by Royal British Legion

A CEREMONY unveiled two new benches in Redcar installed where a First World War tank once stood.

The benches, on the corner of The Stray and Lilac Grove, were unveiled in honour of former soldiers by the Redcar branch of the Royal British Legion during a ceremony on Saturday.
They will replace those that were in the same location but became run down over the years.
The original benches were placed there by the legion for ex-servicemen and the elderly to use, according to a stone plaque built into the wall above them.
At the end of World War One, an army tank was given to the town as a thank you for its war effort and located in the place where the benches now stand.
But at the beginning of the Second World War, the tank was removed so its metal could be used for the war effort. The land was later given to the Royal British Legion, which installed the benches on it.
The branch has been saving up to replace them for some time.
“It’s absolutely marvellous,” said Eric Howden, the group’s branch honorary secretary. “We have been fighting for years to get these benches.
“They’re in a nice location and we hope those using them will think about the ex-service community and continue to give their support to the Royal British Legion.”
Among those who attended the event on Saturday were the legion’s branch president Jack Lambert, Redcar Women’s Section Royal British Legion, Redcar Sea Cadets and Redcar MP Vera Baird.
The ceremony also included a blessing and short service by the Rev John Weetman from the town’s St Peter’s Church.

North East Children’s Champion Nomination

EX-SUBMARINER Mick Williams never lost his “sea breeze” and has been tireless in helping young people get afloat.

Despite his full-time job as a Cleveland Police Chief Inspector and his voluntary chairmanship of Ings Farm School, Redcar, he set up a sea cadet unit and went on to acquire the boats to give youngsters the opportunity to sail.

He regularly takes the school’s Year Six pupils on trips abroad and cadets now regularly achieve success in regional and national regattas.

He joined the Sea Cadet Corps in Guisborough as Petty Officer Instructor in 2004 and, spotting a gap, he opened the Redcar unit the following year.

In 2006 he went before the Admiralty Board for a commission and passed out with the highest score of any UK officer. He also qualified as a Royal Yachting Association dinghy instructor.

He is nominated as Children’s Community Champion by Alan Gardner, chairman of the unit management committee, Redcar Sea Cadets.

He said: “It’s in understanding the needs of the young people and motivating other volunteers and instructors that Mick really excels.

“After setting up the Sea Cadet group membership, he moved towards acquiring sailing craft and having done this, he then set up sailing opportunities at Scaling Dam Sailing Club.

“He has now joined the Scaling Dam Sailing Club Committee representing the Sea Cadets and is working to find our own new premises in his spare time.”

The Children’s Champion category is sponsored by npower.

Evening Gazette 24th November 2007

Redcar Sea Cadets have “won” a Mini Bus!

A Mini Bus used in the Northern Area Headquarters at HMS Caledonia in Rosyth, Scotland was no longer being used and was offered by them for Sea Cadet Units to bid for it in competition.

The Redcar Unit, although the youngest unit in the Sea Cadet Corps, won the bidding contest for the compelling reasons for ownership it put together.

“We now have 15 sailing craft based at Scaling Dam, and during the summer months it’s our intention to use them every week”, says Officer in Charge Sub Lt Mick Williams. “Our Cadets are forging ahead learning seamanship, sailing and rowing and gaining real RYA approved qualifications, as well as having a great time! Our only problem until now has been getting the Cadets from Redcar to Scaling Dam.”

Other Sea Cadet Units in the Teesside area at Guisborough, Middlesbrough, Stockton and Hartlepool, are being encouraged by the Redcar “new boys” to use the facilities at Scaling Dam and now the Minibus.

“We are really grateful to Scaling Dam Sailing Club for allowing us to use their facilities and allowing us to park and boats and kayaks. The Sea Cadet Corps is a Registered Charity providing over 16,000 young people in the UK aged 12-18 both sexes and from any background, with both nautical and life skills, and is funded through local fundraising only”, Alan Gardner the Unit Chairman said. “We could never afford such a costly item as a Minibus – so winning this is a real boost to our plans to enable all Redcar Cadets experience sailing and kayaking, and help us get to other venues like Whitby for events”.

Cadets are encouraged to compete and a recently organised Regatta saw Redcar sweeping the board.

“Buoyed with our success we are hosting a District Regatta in September at Scaling Dam, where we expect to prove our training and the Cadets enthusiasm” Sub Lt Williams reported.

The sun shone on the veterans, cadets, local dignitaries and residents attending yesterday’s service and wreath-laying on the seafront.
The ceremony was followed by a march to the RAFA Club.
Eric Howden, parade marshal, said: “We have got a tremendous turnout and the weather has been very kind to us again.”
The group marched down to the anchor for the service and two-minute silence, during which a lifeboat spread poppies on the water out at sea.
