Exercise Transglobe Selection
Portsmouth Unit have been fortunate enough to gain 2 bursured places for Leg 12 of the Transglobe Race. LC Mike Paddock & S/Lt Katrina Lappin will be sailing from Charleston to Boston USA between 15th May & 5th June 2010.
Exercise Transglobe is a major Tri-Service Adventurous Sail Training Exercise from June 2009 to July 2010.
Over 500 service personnel will experience the highs and lows of ocean crossings from the heat of the Tropics to the Cold of the Southern Ocean. TRANSGLOBE will test their physical and mental stamina whilst building confidence in themselves and their fellow crew members.

Duke Of Westminster Award Nomination
Well Done to LC Jack Baird who In November was nominated for the Duke of Westminster Award. We have just heard that he is amongst the final 40. The top 15 nominations will be selected in the next stage & invited to a selection weekend.
The Duke of Westminster Award is an annual prize which has been created by CVQO to recognise the most outstanding Cadet. For the winners a once in a lifetime trip to South Africa beckons.
The winning Cadet is presented with a certificate along with a £500 cash prize. There are 4 runners up prizes of £250. These will be presented at a prestigious lunch in London. In addition the top 9 finalists will be invited to a three week, expenses paid trip to South Africa.

Portsmouth Cadet Nominated for South Africa
LC Jack Baird has been nominated for one the highest cadet awards in the UK. This is following the excellent course report he recieved after attending CTC Frimley in July.
LC Baird, has to right a short letter for the next stage of the nomination process and then wait to find out if he has been short listed for the final interview stage.
The top cadet will represent the UK in South Africa for 3 weeks in July 2010.

ISCA REGATTA - Mumbai, India
In October 2009, LC Tom Moore was one of 4 Cdts to represent the United Kingdom at the International Sea Cadet Association (ISCA) Regatta which took place from the 18th-28th October in Mumbai & involved cadets from India, Sweden, Canada, Netherlands and the United States.
The cdts were escorted to India by S/Lt Katrina Lappin, our unit Training Officer & took part in a wide range of waterbased activities such as sailing in J24's & 420, Canoeing and 10 man boat pulling. The cadets then competed in all events over the final day.
As well as having fun on the water, there was plenty of time for sightseeing, cultural activities and shopping.

Expedition Training Courses
Portsmouth unit make regular use of the area camping and expedition training facilities located in the New Forest and at Middle Hill(near Horsham)
Most ET Training weekends cost in the region of £10 and are suitable for all levels from Basic Skills to Mountain Leader training as well as catering for the expedition section of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award.

Cadet Vocational Qualifications Office (CVQO)
CVQO is a registered charity responsible for managing Vocational Qualifications for members of the Combined Cadet Force, Sea Cadet Corps, Army Cadet Force and Air Training Corps.
CVQO offers all Cadets over 16 the opportunity to earn, at no cost, a choice of three internationally recognised vocational qualifications that are respected by employers as well as institutes of higher education.
Qualifications currently on offer:
The BTEC First Diploma in Public Services
The BTEC First Diploma in Music
The BTEC First Diploma in Engineering (Maintenance)
The ILM Level 2 Certificate in Team Leading
Cadets must be 16 to enrol on the BTEC Programme. In addition to existing Cadet Activities, Cadets are required to complete the course syllabus which includes supervised adventure training activities and occasional weekend training. All coursework is assessed by Edexcel.
Adult awards are also available through CVQO.

National Training Programme 2009/2010
Cadets from all over the country come together to learn subjects and get involved in various activities.
Most of our National courses take place on naval bases, where Cadets experience all sorts of activities, from trying the confidence course to windsurfing to working in a naval galley.
At the end of the week Cadets generally go home exhausted but having learned new skills, grown in confidence and self-reliance, had fun, and gained new friends.

Duke Of Edinburgh Award
The SCC is an approved operating authority for the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme.
We currently have a Bronze award group who are due to complete the last section of the award in the next few months before moving onto the Silver award.

2010 District 5 A Side Football Competition
Well done to all the cadets that represented Portsmouth unit in the district 5 A Side football competition on Sunday 29th November.

Unit Review
Each year every unit in the sea cadets has a unit review. The UR is used to measure the efficiency level of the unit.
This years unit review will take place on Wed 13th February.
