Penzance Sea Cadets (T.S Grenville) has opened its doors to the young people of Penzance, Newlyn and surrounding areas since 1942. We accept cadets aged between 10 - 12yrs (junior section) 12-18yrs (regular cadet service).

Training Ship Grenville is open to all regardless of sex, religion and race and, within the bounds of safety to themselves and others, to those with special needs. We are proud of the different backgrounds that cadets come from - quite often from the most disadvantaged circumstances.. We seek to ensure that there are no barriers for young people to have the opportunity to be a Sea Cadet.

Why not get involved and become part of a winning team!
We have lots to offer from sailing to shooting, camping to cooking - weeks and weekends away from the parents (or the kids - which ever way you wish to look at it) learning new skills, meeting people and making some life long friends along the way. Cadets isn't about the "stand to attention and dont talk" factor, yes we will enstill discipline but with an element of fun. Why not come in and have look...who knows, it might be the best thing you ever do!

About The Sea Cadets

The Sea Cadet Corps is a nationwide voluntary uniformed youth organisation, open to all young people aged 12 to 18 and with Junior Sections open to those of 10 to 12 years of age. It is Britain's most successful nautical organisation for the development of young people with Units run by enthusiastic adult volunteers.

We have a rank structure modelled on that of the Royal Navy, giving Cadets an opportunity to progress and take up positions of responsibility as they acquire skills and seniority. On reaching 18, many Cadets choose to stay on as adult instructors, when their training and talents become invaluable.

The remit of the Sea Cadets is to provide fun, friendship, adventure and learning new skills based on waterborne and land based activities.

Training Activities

The Sea Cadets is primarily a training organisation, offering many activities which young people can become involved in. These are divided into three categories.

Firstly, a Cadet can specialise in any number of nine 'Specialisations' Seamanship, Communications, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Cooks and Stewards, Writers and Stores, Physical Training and First Aid. The courses often contain recognised qualifications, giving our Cadets an edge whatever they choose to do in life.

Secondly, Cadets can also choose to study a number of Proficiencies - meteorology, expedition training, target shooting, sub-aqua diving and more are all on offer at Training Ship Grenville.

Lastly but by far the most popular we offer boat work proficiencies, training on everything from rowing boats to canoes, sailing boats to power boats. Also on offer are the offshore fleet (T.S Royalist & T.S John Jerwood and soon to be added the T.S Jack Petchey) . The Corps follows the British Canoe Union (BCU) and Royal Yachting Association (RYA) training schemes, and our Cadets have plenty of opportunities to become qualified in a number of different waterborne activities.

The Royal Navy supports the Sea Cadet Corps in many of these activities. RN Establishments around the country host many of the training courses and provide resources, which Penzance often use.

Training Ship Grenville regularly take part in competitions across the country, often representing Cornwall District at Area and National levels

HMS Penzance M106 - Our Affilliated Ship

Launched by HRH Princess Michael of Kent on the 11 March 1997, the current HMS Penzance was commissioned on 14 May 1998 and is the fourth to bear the name.

The first two ships were small frigates commissioned in 1665 and 1747 respectively. The third was a Bridgewater class sloop launched at Devonport in 1930. Employed on convoy duties, Penzance left Cape Breton, Nova Scotia on 15 August 1940 as the sole escort to a convoy bound for Great Britain. Nine days later intercepted by U37, Penzance was torpedoed and sunk with the loss of her captain and 89 men. Penzance and her crew are commemorated on memorials at Chatham Cathedral and the Cathedral in Trinidad's Port of Spain. Ship's motto- Diligenter Pensa (Diligent thought)
