Captain Steve Roberts MN

Steve was born in Salford, Manchester in 1973 and is a keen City supporter – Manchester not Norwich!!

His first contact with the Sea Cadets was aged 12 when he saw his local unit out sailing in Bedfordshire so decided to join and learn. Sailing qualifications followed, as did rowing ( pulling ) and canoeing – most national qualifications with the British Canoe Union and the Royal Yachting Association. In fact he still uses theses qualifications to hire boats and canoes today!

Steve also went to sea onboard the Sea Cadet’s Sail Training Ship twice, making it as far as Amsterdam on one voyage, attended courses with the Royal Navy and took part in lots of local events from fete’s to Remembrance Parades.

After leaving school Steve joined the Royal Navy as a Warfare Officer in 1992. Post basic and specialist training he Navigated HMS Blackwater and ended his 7 year commission onboard HMS Cornwall.

Steve went from the RN to the Royal Fleet Auxiliary in 1999 on a variety of vessel types from Ammunition and Supply Ships, Oil Tankers for Replenishing at Sea. He Left the RFA in 2007 and Currently works for Guardline a Merchant Navy Company.

The MN work a sea,and home leave roster and he helps out when he is on leave with parade nights, river activities and maintenance of the vessel.

Away from the sea and cadets Steve enjoys countryside pursuits – horse riding and clay pigeon. He is also a qualified diver but only dives in tropical non-UK warm and clear waters!!

Lieutenant (SCC) Derek Grieve RNR

Public Relations Officer

Derek Grieve started going to sea at the age of eleven, which was the same time as he joined the local Sea Cadets. He used to go down to the fish quay and scrounge rides from the trawlers and would go to sea with them for a couple of days, gaining experience with many hours helming the boats.

Lt Grieve rose through the ranks at the cadets to Cadet Instructor, one of few in the country at that time. He joined the Royal Navy in the sixty's and served as a Radar Operator and Seaman. He served on every type of vessel the navy had at that time except Aircraft Carriers. During this time Derek worked with many other military units. Most noticeably the Royal Marines, He was also involved with training Officer Cadets from Dartmouth with the Dartmouth Training Squadron.

Derek left the Royal Navy in 1975. After trying several jobs ashore he returned to sea with the Merchant Navy ending up as a Master in the Trinity House Light Vessel Service. His claim to fame was that he was the last Master of the Happisburgh Light Vessel before it was taken off station and replaced during the automation program.

After leaving the Royal Navy Derek settled in Norwich and rejoined the Sea Cadet Corps where he rose to the position of Commanding Officer. Pressures of work at the time caused him to leave the corps. Returning to the Corps, the first year was spent regaining the qualifications he once had, which he hopes will be of benefit to the cadets, unit and district.

Lieutenant Grieve is the A qualified Advanced Seamanship Instructor, Navigation Instructor, and also instructs in Communications.

Lt Grieve is also the Area Staff Officer for Public Relations.

Mrs Irene Spinks

Chairman Unit Management Committee

Irene was born in Norwich but spent her childhood and teenage years travelling the world with her parents as her father was serving in the Royal Air Force. She returned to Norwich in 1978.

Married to a former Norwich Sea Cadet, Chris, the family renewed their ties with the unit again in 1998 when daughter Sally joined the Junior Section. In 2004 Irene joined the Unit Management Committee and became Chairman in July 2005. Irene enjoyed seeing the new HQ being towed up the river in September 2005, but didn't realise quite how much work was required before the ship was commissioned in September 2007.

Being part of Sea Cadets has led to Irene doing things she never thought she would, these include climbing down a harbour wall to board TS John Jerwood, travelling to Rochdale 'on holiday' 3 years in a row and abseiling down Chapelfield Mall.

The highlights of Irene's time as Chairman so far have been the Commissioning of TS Lord Nelson and receiving the Units first ever Burgee closely followed in 2008 by it's second.

Irene loves to garden and travel as much as possible; and has a long list of exotic and far away places she would like to visit! She also looks forward to summer camp with the Cadets at TS Palantine every year where, along with husband Chris, she runs the galley and tries to keep 24 hungry Cadets fed and watered for a week!

Ms Chrissie Pye

Vice Chairman Unit Management Committee

Chrissie Pye grew up in Gorleston on Sea and was inspired by her father (ex RN radio operator) to join the Coastguard Auxiliary Service when she was 18, having shown an interest in all things maritime from a tender age. She served for 15 years with what is now the MCA, and was involved in major search and rescue operations such as the Eleni V and the Wegro. In 1980 after realising on entering the WRNS that women did not serve on ships in those days, Chrissie joined the RNXS for 9 years as a seaman, navigator and communicator and when the service was disbanded went on to establish the Norwich branch of the Maritime Volunteer Service which originally aimed to cover tasks previously performed by RNXS.

Chrissie learnt to sail dinghies in her teens and for many years was a keen water-skier. She has been known to get involved with the Cadets in the water on occasions but not so much recently after realising she could not stay upright in a canoe!

Chrissie spent 2 years training with the RNLI and her partner David Mason served for 36 years (7 years as Coxswain) on the Gt Yarmouth and Gorleston Lifeboat and is well decorated for his bravery and skill.

Chrissie works for Norfolk County Council and is a member of the Emergency Centre Support team and NORMIT and enjoys getting involved in training and exercises in preparation for dealing with major incidents.

Chrissie has been with the Unit for 12 years and had various roles and this year was elected as Vice Chair, a position she is very much looking forward to as the Unit continues to grow and has many exciting prospects and challenges ahead
