AREA BOATWORK WEEKENDS (ABWs) 2008

Boating rig, including spare soft shoes or trainers Several changes of sports wear, underwear and socks Sleeping bag and pillow Torch – electricity supplied by diesel generator RYA/SCC log books and writing material Towels and toilet gear (No Aerosol Sprays) Parent’s consent form (T1) Pocket money (no shore leave) Bin bag or similar to take wet/dirty clothes home in Plate, Bowl, Mug, Knife, Fork, Spoon, Tea Towel Mobile ‘phones – these will be taken from the cadets on arrival but they will have the use of them on Saturday evening. However there is a weak signal for mobile phones. There is a No Smoking policy at the Boat Station.
Telephone number of Thrapston Boat Station is 01832 732746 (normally only manned at week-ends)
2 Charges The charge for cadets is £25 per week-end and they are asked to join the boat station by 2130 on the Friday evening. The boat station will not be open until approximately 2030. Cadets should arrive back at around 1500-1600 on the Sunday. A deposit of £15 is required, if not already paid, to secure the booking.
3 Travel Travel will be arranged by the unit and mostly is provided via the unit minibus, however on odd occasions we do request that parents assist with the transportation of the cadets to and from the boat station (approx 25 miles from Northampton, 15 miles from Wellingborough).
4 Accommodation You are reminded that whilst the water borne facilities are excellent, the on shore facilities are basic comprising mainly of a large nissen hut with all the attendant problems of heating. If the course is in the Spring or Autumn the cadets should be advised to come prepared with plenty of warm clothing consistent with the climate at that time of the year. Sleeping arrangements comprise of cabins accommodating six, four or three candidates.
5 After the course We aim to give every cadet the very best of attention and to facilitate the development of their water skills. Should any of your cadets have any legitimate complaint following the course, please let me know.

Fundraising at Northampton SCC
We at Northampton Sea Cadets are currently raising money to improve our site conditions by providing a hardstanding for boat maintenance and parade training. Also we wish to improve the ability to access our boats by providing safe and accessible boat jetties which are used constantly throughout the summer months for training.
The site currently presents a significant Health and Safety risk due to trip hazard & at this time we cannot offer our facilities to physically impaired people. As well as looking unsightly often mud and other debris are bought into the unit buildings which increases the effort need to keep the ship, "ship shape and Bristol fashion"
The unit has approximately 80 cadets from a variety of social backgrounds ranging in ages from 10 to 18 years & the Sea Cadets gives these young people different activities to participate in based on watersports and naval activities.
The Northampton Sea Cadet Unit is funded solely through local fundraising and is a registered charity in its own right. The unit is not a pre-service organisation and is run by the Sea Cadet Association. The MoD provides the Sea Cadets limited resources in the form of uniforms and some boats and provides funding for the national training centres. The unit funds have to provide and maintain all local resources such as the unit buildings, insurance, boats, canoes and equipment and transport cadets. The staffs are unpaid volunteers and give their time freely and willingly to the Sea Cadets.
Current donations have been received from the following companies and organisations for this project and we thank them for their generosity:-
Northampton Royal Navy and Royal Marines Association.
If you are thinking of sponsoring, funding or helping us financially in any way, please contact us. Thank you in anticipation of your support.
