April Swimming Date Change

Due to the Unit Easter Camp at Ashworth Valley, the monthly swim at Middleton Arena has been moved to the second Saturday in the month (10th). Usual times (muster) 1715 to 1845 (depart).

Burgee for 2010

Following on from our Unit Review last month, TS TREMADOC BAY has been awarded an efficiency Burgee for 2010.

A big thank you to all the staff, cadets, committee members and parents for their help in 2009-2010.

Lord Lts Poppy Appeal Competition

Midd&Chad Unit came 2nd in the Lord Lieutenant of Manchester's Poppy Appeal Competition.

In 2009 we raisd over £5000, a vast imporvement on 2008 but not enough to beat our neighbouring unit (Oldham) who raised just over £8000.

The cadet forces of Manchester raised £112,000 in 2009.

The CO and 4 cadets attended the awards night and recieved two awards for the 2009 Poppy Appeal.

Unit Review 2010

The Unit was host to LtCdr David McKee and his inspection team on Monday 1st Feburary for our Unit Review (Inspection).

The District Officer was very pleased with his visit to the Unit and our performance in the 2009-2010 Unit Review and our 2010 Area Logistics Officer's Visit.

Swimming & Keep Fit 2010

For the 2nd year monthly swimming and keep-fit sessions have been arranged at Middleton Arena for the cadets & staff.

Swimming ~ 1st Saturday of Month (1730-1830)*
Keep Fit ~ 3rd Thursday of Month (1930-2030)

* Swimming in January will be the 9th not 2nd.

Muster 15 mins before the session.

Transport to/from Unit not provided except for swimming sessions on training weekends.

Both sessions continue to be free but this will be reviewed perodicaly by the UMC.

L/Cpl Rogers joins the Army

L/Cpl David Rogers joins the Army on 3rd January 2010. He was presented with a card; gifts and a vote of good luck from the Ship's Company during the last parade night.

POC & BETC for L/C Elliott

L/C Elliott has sucessfuly passed his POC board and was informaly advanced during the last parade night. His formal advancement along with his BTEC presentation will be at the Unit Review in January.

Royal Naval Parade 2009

The Unit was host to LtCol Steve Wothersoon on Thursday 09th February for our Royal Navy Prade (Inspection).

The Area Officer was very pleased with his second visit to the Unit and our performance in our 2009 Unit Review and our 2009 Logistics Visit.

Visitors on the night included parents, members of the RNA and RNLI and other local supporters.

Mayor's Visit

The Mayor of Rochdale presented the Unit's 2008 Efficiency Burgee at the Annual Presentation on Monday 1st December.

In addition the Mayor presented numerous annual awards, four BTEC awards, one DofE award and the highlight of the evening Sgt Gallacher's Cadet Forces Medal.

The CFM is awarded for 12 years Uniformed service to the cadet forces.

Marine Field Assessment 2008

The Marine Detachment recently spent a weekend at Altcar Army Base undertaking their annual SRMOs field assessment.

The detachment achieved a "very good" grade, which is an improvement on their their performance over the past few years.

Well done to the Section Commader Cpl Brogan amd his 2ic Cpl Smith.

Royal Navy Parade 2007

The Unit was host to LtCol Steve Wothersoon on Thursday 14th June for our Royal Navy Prade (Inspection).

Weymouth Bound

Eleven cadets along with Lt Sinden and CI Sharples spent the long Mayday Bank Holiday weekend in Weymouth.

The cadets spent a day offshore sailing on TS BOB ALLEN and a day expedition training around the Isle of Portland. TS BOB ALLEN is a mini-brig with a full suite of square and traditional sails and over a mile of rigging.

Other activities included, crab fishing, fairground appreciation, rock climbing, physical training, practical navigation and the weekend ended with a firework display in Weymouth Bay.

On the journey back the cadets went to Wookey Hole to look at one of the largest cave networks and the traditional papermaking mill.

Belfast Buffet

A weekend in Northern Ireland teaching our friends over the water the basics of Cook/Steward was recently organised by Lt Sinden and PPO Amos, with two other instructors from Stretford Unit.

Three NI instructors and eleven NI cadets passed their Class 3 C/S and are now working towards Class 2. The course included a buffet for 20 people, which was held in the excellent facilities of Carrickfergus Marina Complex.

Heartstart First Aid

Congratulations to the five Juniors who have completed their Heartstart First Aid training.

Food Hygeine

We hosted our first food hygeine course at the unit today with 15 people from all corners of the Northwest Area attending.

Congratulations to PPO Amos and CI Sharples for passing their Essential Food Hygeine Course.

A big thank you to Lt McGarry for running the course for us.

Other sucessful candidates represented Bury, Bollington, Holyhead, Stretford, Salford, Workington and Wallasey Units.

TS TREMADOC BAY has been awarded an efficiency Pennant for 2006.

Acting Up

Following the retirement of CPO Homa the Unit's OCMCD will be acting up as the Executive Officer.

Sgt Gallacher has been with the Unit since 1995 and has lead the Marine Detachment since 2005. Previously Sgt Gallacher was a Divisional Officer for the Bluejackets and OC Juniors.

Sgt Vicky Martin is acting as the OCMCD until Sgt Gallacher returns to her post. Sgt Martin is a keen Expedition Leader and hopes to focus on training a team for the area competition during her spell in charge.

Chief Homa Retires

CPO Steve Homa officialy retired from the corps at the end of 2006 following 40 years of service to both Midd&Chad and Oldham Units.

The highlight of his cadet career was collecting his Gold DofE Award from HRH Prince Phillip in 1972.

Steve still hopes to keep in contact with the corps and is considering joining our PSA. Steve was presented with a selection of retirement gifts by the Unit President ~ Jack Woods.

The Commanding Officer would like to wish Steve and Gill a long and happy retirement.

Unit President

At the Unit AGM in October, Shipmate Jack Woods from the Royal Naval Association has been elected as the Unit President.

Jack is the Chairman of the North Manchester Branch of the Royal Naval Assoiciation. He is a keen supporter of the Unit and a regular at our social functions.
