Meet the Staff

Below you will find a picture and short description to introduce you to the people that work hard to run the Unit in a fun and safe manner

Lieutenant Commander (SCC) Wendy Theobald RNR

Commanding Officer

Lt Cdr Theobald joined the Sea Cadet Corps in 1987 as Petty Officer GNTC at Beccles Sea Cadet Unit (TS Brave). Three months later, she became the Executive Officer and Officer-in-Charge of the Girls Nautical Training Corps.

In 1990 as a Chief Petty Officer (GNTC), Lt Cdr Theobald succesfully passed the Officer's Selection Board and was promoted to Third Officer (GNTC) - closely followed one month later by a promotion to Sub Lieutenant all within four weeks!

In 1992, she took over as OiC Lowestoft Sea Cadets, a position that was held for six years, until leaving to dedicate her time to being District Officer.

Lt Cdr Theobald was to return to Lowestoft Sea Cadets in 2004 after a short break, to regain her position as Commanding Officer. A position she holds to this day.

Petty Officer (SCC) Lee Woods

Unit Training Officer

After a break of 10 years, Lee rejoined Lowestoft Unit to take on the challenge of UTO.

Lee joined the Unit in 1991 and in his first seven years, became a Petty Officer Cadet gaining qualifications such as Pulling Coxswain, Power Level 2 and First Class Writer / Stores and went onto the staff as a Petty Officer before leaving due to work commitments.

With a keen interest in Drill and First Aid, Lee is keen to take these subjects into the future and help the Unit gain as many qualifications as possible.

Petty Officer (SCC) Debbie Mottram

Administration Officer / Communications Instructor

Debbie has been a member of Lowestoft Sea Cadets for around seven years. Currently the Administration Officer and Stores Officer, Debbie also enjoys teaching Communications.

Before joining the Corps, Debbie had experience of the Naval ways of life in the Royal Naval Auxilliary Service as a Assistant Duty Officer (Ops).

Outside of the Unit, Debbie enjoys playing Darts and socialising with friends.

Petty Officer (SCC) Phil Lark

Seamanship Instructor

Phil's Sea Cadet career began when his children joined the Unit as Cadets. During his time in the Unit, Phil has been a member of the Unit Management Committee and was infamous as being the 'odd job man'!

As Phil's passion for the Unit grew, he left the UMC to become a Petty Officer - something which he has now been for a good 7-8 years. During that time he has also been the Armoury Controller and the First Lietenant.

Having a keen interest in Seamanship, and despite his not-so-great health, Phil strives to achieve a 100% success rate in his classes, in one of the most important subjects taught at the Unit.

You can see Phil here chatting to the Captain of the Sea Cadet Corps at SeaCadetFest Chapelfield 2008.

Petty Officer (SCC) David Barney

Boats Officer and Cook / Steward Instructor

Petty Officer Barney has now been a member of staff for over 7 years. Having had two sons go through all rates when Cadets, he has had his fair share of trials and tribulations with the Unit!!

Recently qualified as a Heartstart Instructor, Dave is also a Cook / Steward Instructor and a keen Seamanship Instructor. Dave also leads the Junior Sea Cadet section with Petty Officer Holland - along with a little help from the other members of staff.

Dave has a passion for the History of the Royal Navy and the Sea Cadet Corps and also helps out with the maintenance of the Unit.

Petty Officer (SCC) Laura Holland

Divisional Officer and Metereology Instructor

Having had a brother and sister as members of the Unit, Lauras interest in helping out grew as a teenager.

Initially helping out in the Stores, Laura slowly transferred onto the Uniformed Staff after turning 18.

Now a Divisional Officer for Drake Division, Laura also helps run the Junior Section and instructs the New Entries in the Senior section.

Lieutenant (SCC) Billy Anderson RNR (Ret'd)

Billy joined Lowestoft Unit at the age of 39, and has given many years to the Corps.

In the civillian world, Billy is a Captain for Gardline Shipping and has been with them for 37 years!

Billy enjoys teaching Seamanship and has a passion for Chartwork and all things on the water.

Probationary Civilian Instructor (SCC) Carrie-Ann Keeble

Carrie-Ann is a new edition to our staff, she is a qualified nurse and currently works at Lowestoft Hospital. Carrie-Ann is keen to pass on her knowledge within the first aid specialisation as well as a desire to learn new skills within the Sea Cadet Corps.

Unit Management Committee

Chairperson - Rev. Peter Paine
Treasurer - Mrs Janet Reay-Pashler
Secretary - Mrs Joan Dowson

These are the people that help to run the Unit in it's physical sense, arranging for maintenance, fundraising and managing the Unit's finances.

Very shortly we will also have a Parents and Supporters Association - this groups sole purpose is to raise funds for the Unit. This can be done a variety of ways, from tombolas, to large grant applications and fundraising drives.

HMS Walney

This is the Unit's affiliated ship - she is a Sandown Class Mine Countermeasure Vessel.

Commissioned in 1992, WALNEY is the fourth ship of that name.

Although communication with the ship has been sparce in recent times, we hope to regain a good working relationship with her in the near future.

Check back regularly for more news and updates!
