£50,000 Awarded To Kendal Sea Cadets

Well done to all Staff, Parents and Cadets who pulled out all the stops to ensure we would get the most votes on the BORDER TV Peoples Millions night. With 4334 votes, we beat the Glenmore Trust who appeared in the same Lookaround slot and got 2651 votes. We also had the most votes out of all 6 entries in the Border Region. Work is now underway to finalise the new extension drawing changes and turn these into engineering drawings. We will then seek quotations from 3 Contractors with the aim of starting the Extension Project by 4 March and finishing by 30 September at the latest.

CONGRATULATIONS

A very well done to cadets Ellie Fairclough, Rhys Clark and Jasmine Box on passing their Leading Cadet boards.

Also well done to Mathew Robinson, Victoria Edgar, Josh Wright Steventon and Victoria Gardner on being selected to represent the Sea Cadet Corps in the National Postal League competition against the ACF and the ATC.

Lt Cdr Burns' Inspection

Inspection

Lt Cdr Burns always takes an interest in cadet progress. Here he quizzes a cadet about her qualifications and aspirations.

NATIONAL AWARDS

On 4 Jun 08 the Unit were informed that, following their recent Inspections, they had been awarded a BURGEE Efficiency Award. This award is only given to those Units that meet the exacting standards of the MOD and our National Charity .

Earlier in 2008 Kendal Sea Cadets were also awarded the McBeath Trophy. This is another national award and puts the Unit up there with the biggest and best units in the country.

These are great achievements that all Cadets, Staff and Supporters can be proud of.

Fun At Palatine

Capsize!

Cadets have fun at Palatine. All parents are encouraged to allow their children to attend any training weekend (or week) that the CO can book for the Unit. TS Palatine is the North West sail training centre based at Hollingworth Lake near Rochdale.

Divisions

The Evolution Teams get ready for action.

Oh No - He's Talking To Me

One-to-one

Once the cadets realise just what a friendly and approachable marine officer Lt Col Wotherspoon is they soon relax and answer all his questions.

First Aid Team To The Rescue

Fire Drill

Our damage control evolution, where we deal with a simulated explosion in the ship, soon calls for the help of our ace team of First Aid qualified cadets

The Sailor's Hornpipe

Hornpipe

In the true tradition of Nelson's Navy our cadets have learned to dance the Sailors Hornpipe as a demonstration of how sailors of old were all encouraged to keep fit and active.

The Juniors Are Presented With Their Awards.

Yes, Sir

Our 10 - 12 year olds (the Juniors Section) are fully integrated into the Unit and, under the watchful eye of Petty Officer Cath Brooks, are all encouraged to gain sea cadet qualifications.

Our very own Royal Navy ship

HMS Cumberland

HMS Cumberland - Kendal Unit's affiliated ship. All Sea Cadet Units have strong links with RN ships that enable them to visit whenever their ship is in port. Cadets are sometimes even allowed to stay on board for short passages between UK ports. Where the programme allows, the ship's Captain occasionally also pops in and inspects the cadets. If we are really lucky, he may even bring some of his Ship's Company to help out with HQ maintenance.

See the Link to the Ships own website below:

Guard Present Arms !

Cadets parading in the Unit

For all formal occasions and special VIP visits the cadets form a Guard and use MOD approved deactivated drill rifles. Many cadets enjoy the discipline involved in the drill training and they all look very smart when they are part of the parades around the town.

The Captain Inspects our Cadets

Captain Best visits the Unit

The Cadets are on parade, in their best uniforms, ready to impress their visiting inspecting officer. All uniforms are on loan from the RN and are an important part of our aim of ensuring that we always represent the customs and traditions of the Royal Navy correctly.

Hello Sir !

Captain Best inspecting the Cadets

The CO of HMS Cumberland offering careers advice to one of our cadets. Although the Sea Cadets are not a recruiting organisation for the Royal Navy, a small number of cadets who have thrived on the order, discipline and skill range of our activities find the transition to a Naval career (Royal or Merchant) to be a natural step. Equally, the leadership skills, independence and confidence generated through our activities all help the cadets to do well in any career and also provide an excellent balance for the academic rigours of school life.

The Team

Officers and Cadets at the Unit

Our Staff and Cadets at the Unit.

You too could join us and enjoy all that the Sea Cadets have to offer. You do not need to have any plans to join the Services, just a desire to make new friends and learn to sail, canoe, shoot, go on expeditions and just generally get more out of life.

Call or email now (kendaloic@yahoo.co.uk) or just pop down on one of our Monday or Thursday parade nights. If its summer time we will probably be sailing up at Killington Lake every Monday.
