Sea Cadets
The Sea Cadets aims to provide young people aged 12 - 18 with an environment based on the Royal Navy in which they can choose what they learn from a wide range of stimulating subjects and have fun while doing so.
The Cadets start with the basic syllabus learning about life skills and general knowledge that will help them progress in other areas including the history and the traditions of the Sea Cadets and the Royal Navy.
Topics that Cadets can expect to learn in their Unit during their basic training include parade training, fire prevention, ship's routine, basic seamanship, boatwork, physical training, first aid, safety within the Unit.
A wide variety of other subjects are also available, both on the water and on dry land. All Cadets learn about the Royal Navy, Merchant Navy and other sea services. Courses are available in anything from rock climbing and shooting, through IT and communications to music and cook/steward. While some subjects are taught in the local Units, others involve courses at our training centres, which can be found all over the country. Sea Cadets can also work towards qualifications in a variety of physical and practical subjects including:
Swimming Climbing and abseiling SCUBA Diving Meteorology Marksmanship Music Sailing Kayaking Powerboating Marine Engineering
If the Cadet is keen, there’s no limit to what they can achieve. Most offshore training can be credited towards maritime qualifications including, once cadets are 18 years old, the coveted Yachtmaster award.
If you're aged 12-18 and like the look of the activities we have to offer, we'd love to meet you.

Marine Cadet Detachment
If you’ve got the bottle – tell it to the Marines!
And pretty soon you could be following in the footsteps of the Royal Marine commandos – the cream of Britain’s fighting forces.
Learn the combat skills of camouflage and concealment, reach a rendezvous with a map and compass or just the stars to guide you and get to grips with the firepower of some of the latest weapons.
Yes, you can test your talents against one of the toughest challenges in the book and develop new skills to give you a head start in life. And to really impress your friends, there’s a bonus in store, for when you change out of your combat kit, for parades and ceremonial occasions you’ll wear the famous "blues" – best uniform of the Royal Marines. As you’d expect, the Marine Cadet Detachments are highly disciplined so that each member of a "troop" can depend one hundred percent on his / her mates. You’ll learn self-discipline and teamwork – all the battle savvy of the fighting soldier. And because you’re part of a Sea Cadet Unit there are all the water-borne activities too. MCDs are open to boys and girls from age 13 and promotion prospects are good. So when you make Sergeant, you’ll be leading your own troops into firefights where every split second counts.
So why not move on from the action man make believe of computer games, become a Marine Cadet -- and get real.

Junior Section
We also operate a Junior Sea Cadets Section for ages 10 -12. Juniors have their own syllabus of sailing, canoeing, expedition training, water safety, practical activities, games, and visits and much more, all aimed at their age group and to give them a taste of what they can expect once they reach 12 and become a full Sea Cadet.

Our Unit
We are lucky to have a purpose built building incorporating several classrooms which is adjacent to a small lake and also the Ashby Canal, which gives us plenty of scope to run all sorts of activities both on and off the water. Until recently, facilities at our Unit were very basic with no running water/toilets. However we are now most of the way through an extension and upgrade project funded by a £50,000 Big Lottery Grant, and a similar level of Unit raised funds. This will provide a new staff room, purpose built kitchen, as well as toilets, showers and changing areas.

If you have a little bit of time to spare and are willing to help out in your comminity why not contact us and assist with fundraising and management of the Unit. Alternatively, you may wish to consider joining our staff. There are no qualifications or previous experience required, only a desire to help young people.
