Cadet Multi Training

This weekend, 5th-7th March, 10 cadets and three staff travelled to Crowborough for the weekend. I can only say that it was freezing! However, the cadets returnrd with qualifications in First Aid, Seamanship, Communications, Campcraft and Leadership skills. A special mention to the two cadets who slept in tents overnight where the temperature was minus 7. We were lucky this year to have the use of the sergent's mess in the evening. The cadets could stay warm and socialize with friends from around the Essex District. Well done to you all.

Unit Closure

Due to inclement weather the unit will be closed tonight Thursday 7th January. Will update on Tuesday if the weather is still bad.

Christmas Closure

The unit will be closed after the last parade night on Thursday 17th December and will re-open on Thursday 7th January. There is a staff meeting on Tuesday 5th January at 7pm. Wishing all cadets, staff, committee and parents a wonderful Christmas and New Year.

Junior Drill Team

On the same day as the seniors competed, five junior cadets from our unit went up against other District teams in Open Drill. JSFC M.Chan was guard commander, and did a fantastic job. On her Birthday too! After only a few weeks practice and some intensive training, they did a great job, finishing 4th in the junior section. It was very daunting for them in what was for all of them their first competition. They all turned out looking very smart. Well done to them all.

Drill and Guard Competition

On Sunday 22nd November we took eight senior cadets to the District Drill and Guard competition at James Hornsby School in Basildon. This is one of the most difficult competitions of the year. All involved have spent several weekends running through the complex routine. They did very well and managed a creditable 5th place. We finished 4th place overall in the Distrct for the year. Congratulations to all cadets who have taken place in any competition this year and earned points.

Lord Mayor's Parade.

On Saturday 14th November seven cadets and four staff got up in the early hours to travel into London for the Lord Mayor's parade. Four cadets and PO Boseley walked the route alongside the float in ET Rig. Our marine section also walked alongside the float in full camo gear. Our Junior was more fortunate riding on the sea cadet float. The day was really enjoyable if not tiring had it not been for the torrential rain and wind! Everyone got soaked through, but were really well motivated and a credit to Harlow unit. Our photo shows L/C V.Boseley in the front rank of the marching platoon.

Remembrance Day Parade

On Sunday 8th of November the entire ships company mustered for the annual Remembrance Parade. They all turned out in their best uniforms and marched to the local cenotaph for the service. Despite cold and damp conditions, they all presented themselves with pride and dignity. Special mention to O/C Lee Rogers for carrying the unit's colours for the first time this year, he did a great job.The service had special meaning this year, with so many of our young service men and women fighting a very current conflict in Afghanistan. Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this difficult time. Lastly a big well done and Thank You to all the cadets.

Swimming Competiton

On Saturday 3rd October we took part in the annual District swimming competition at South Woodham Ferrers. Once again our numbers were low but, all cadets put all their effort into taking place and we came away with a couple of individual medals. Special mention to JSC G.Harris in his first competition for Harlow. His third place secured a 5th overall place in the junior competition. He is seen in the middle of the picture taken earlier this month when we were trying, unsuccessfully to put up tents.

Seamanship Competition

Four cadets travelled to Chelmsford to take part in the District Seamanship competition on 27th September. We only entered one team this year due to cadets having other commitments. The weather was wonderful for the pulling part of the day. Our team came a respectable 7th overall. The team consisted of MC2 G.Holland, OC A.Manning,OC L.Rogers and Cdt C.Nye. Well done to you all.

Multi Training

This weekend 8 cadets travelled to Crowborough in Sussex for a multi traning weekend. They took part in leadership skills and some took proficencies in subjects such as campcraft, First aid and armed and un-armed drill. All cadets were successful in their chosen subject and all left with a qualification or experience in a new field. All cadets behaved well and had a great time. We were also lucky to have fantastic weather.

HMS Bristol

Last weekend our CO and several cadets travelled down to HMS Bristol in Portsmouth for a boating activity weekend.
The weather was wonderful and the cadets enjoyed their time on the water. They met up with old friends from units in the district, and some new friends from all over the country. Some of the cadets were able to gain qualifications in several waterbourne skills during the time on board. Overall, it was a great weekend and enjoyed by everyone who went.

ADOs Waterborne fun day.

Cadets from all over the district descended to RVDS for the second fun day of the year. They had the chance to participate in several activities such as raft building, kayaking, powerboating and bell boating. The weather was great all day and all staff and cadets had a fun day. There was a barbecue and refreshments at lunch, and an opportunity to meet some old and new friends from around Eseex district.

St Clares Hospice

On Saturday 19th July several cadets and staff helped with the setting up of the annual fete. The weather was very unkind to us with downpours throughout the day. However, all the cadets were most helpful, which was commented on by the stall holders and the staff. The cadets boiled kettles, erected gazebos, transported tables and chairs and any others job needed. They were a credit to Halow sea cadets and a big THANK YOU to them all.

Buckingham Palace.

On Thursday 16th July, five cadets from Harlow along with the CO,S. Street, were chosen to attend a garden party at Buckingham Palace. It was hosted by Prince Charles to celebrate uniformed youth organisations. There were Police cadets, Army cadets, Scouts etc. All the cadets had a lovely day, but did mention that cucumber sandwiches are not as nice as they are made out to be!

Area Regatta

After our success at the District Regatta we once again went to the Royal Victoria Docks to compete against several units from the London area.We achieved many individual gold and silver medals. The weather wasn't as kind this time but the cadets, staff and spectators still enjoyed a good day. Essex won both the overall boys and girls competitions, and we were lucky enough to return with the trophy. We are hoping that some of our winners will be chosen for the National competition in August.

District Regatta

After months of planning, 13 cadets and 7 staff from Harlow Unit set off for Toronto, Canada. On arrival they were welcomed by the Canadian Sea Cadets who lent them their HQ for accommodation. Following a visit to Niagara Falls the group headed off to Madawaska, Ontario for a camping trip. Here the group undertook activities including trekking in the forest, raft building, kayaking, canoeing and white water rafting. Sight seeing visits were also carried out, including observing a beaver's dam and the beavers, a trip to Barry Bay and a visit to a logging museum. They even got the chance to hear wolves howling around them whilst camping. After ten days the group headed home having experienced the trip of a lifetime.

National Trafalgar Day Parade

Despite atrocious weather and a broken-down, rather late coach, 400 Sea Cadets paraded in Trafalgar Square on Sunday 26 October. They honoured Nelson's historic victory, with a marine cadet drill display and a parade of platoons of Sea and Marine Cadets from the Mall to Trafalgar Square, accompanied by the 80 strong Sea Cadet Corps marching band.

The young people had been practising for two days solidly at Fort Block House, Gosport which paid off with a fantastic parade filmed by BBC London and BBC South East, who captured the show, giving millions of people in the South the chance to witness the spectacle.

For over 100 years The Sea Cadets have marked this anniversary. It is a great opportunity for them to showcase their skills to Naval dignitaries and London's spectators and tourists. Vice Admiral Sir Adrian Johns KCB CBE ADC carried out the inspection which was followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at the foot of Nelson's Column.
