Congratulations to PO(SCC) D Gowing and CPO(SCC) D Frickey who have been awarded the Cadet Forces Medal for 12 years service.

Following on from their sucess in the Area Regatta. Three cadets from Gravesend Unit represented the Southern Area at the National Combined Regatta held at the Excel exhibition centre, London on 6th September 2008. Despite the unkind weather, the cadets achieved a fantastic 3rd place.

Congratulations and thank you for all your hard work, a very well deserved result.

Gravesend Unit to represent Southern Area at the National Regatta

Three cadets from Gravesend Unit came first at the Area Regatta in the Power Boat Handling competition, held at the Southern Area Boat Station, HMS EXCELLENT, Portsmouth on Sunday 6 July.

Trained by PO(SCC) Paul Frickey the crew beat six other crews by showing their skills handling a displacement power boat through a number of procedures.

The three will go on to represent Southern Area at the National regatta in September 2008.

Police Dog Visit - 14 May 2008

Cadets from Gravesend unit were entertained by PC Milligan, Luther and Barney from the Medway Police Dog Section.

After explaining the role of the Police Dog Unit, PC Milligan introduced the cadets to Barney a black Labrador. Despite a few problems walking on the laminated maindeck floor Barney gave two excellent demonstrations on drug detection.

The cadet were then taken out into the car park in small groups to look at the Police car and to see Luter the attack dog. Luther is a highly trained German sheppard attack dog and was only able to be seen in the back of the Police car.

Royal Navy Parade - 26 March 2008

Commander Bushell inspects the Guard

On Wednesday 26 March 2008, Gravesend Sea Cadets entertained the Southern Area Officer, Commander Gary Bushell Royal Navy, and a number of other invited guests including the Deputy Mayor of Gravesend at the unit's Royal Naval Parade.

After Ceremonial Divisions, the cadets entertained a large audience with a display of boating activities (on dry land!) and a relay race donning safety equipment.

After Evening Colours, Commander Bushell presented the Annual Awards.

The evening went very well despite poor weather conditions.

12 years service for S/Lt (SCC) Challis RNR

Lt Cdr (SCC) Jones RNR presents the Cadet Forces Medal to a chuffed S/Lt (SCC) Challis RNR

S/Lt(SCC) Stewart Challis RNR was presented with the Cadet Forces Medal to mark 12 years of adult service to the Sea Cadet Corps. The medal was presented by the District Officer of West Kent Sea Cadets, Lt Cdr (SCC) Peter Jones RNR on 27 February 2008.

Southern Area Regatta

Gravesend Unit represented West Kent District at the Southern Area Regatta held at Portsmouth on Sunday 29 July 2007.

Both the open Girls Pulling Crew and Power Boat Handling Crew had an excellent day.

The Open Girls Pulling Crew came third overall and the Power Boat Handling Crew came second.

An excellent set of results were achieved by Gravesend unit's pulling crews at the District Pulling Regatta held at the London Area Boat station on Sunday 10th June 2007.

Adventure Weekend

Archery - Where's Robin Hood?

Trust exercises, Orienteering, Archery, Climbing wall and Top Ropes were some of the activities that cadets took part in during the Adventure Weekend. The weekend funded by one of the grant applications was held at the Arethesua Venture Centre in Upnor, Rochester. The weekend, primarily for Junior Sea cadets, gave the cadets a chance to try new activities and help to build teamwork. The centre instructors were impressed by the cadets, especially at how much mud one cadet can get on one t'shirt during the Orienteering course!

More Grant News for Gravesend Unit

Gravesend Sea Cadets have just been awarded a further grant from the Local Network Fund of £7,000.

The money will be used to provide a stacking boat trailer to transport the Unit's three Pico sailing dinghies purchased last year with funding from the Local Network Fund and Land Securities Link Fund. The grant will also be used to purchase additional sails for the dinghy fleet and to provide specialist computer software to allow the Unit to develop on line training and assessment facilities on it's new computer network funded by Awards for All and Kent Youth Council.

This grant award brings the total of capital project grant funding obtained by the Unit this financial year to £29,300.

Grant Success for Gravesend Unit

Gravesend Sea Cadet Unit have been selected as a recipient of grant funding under two major Government funded award schemes, The Youth Capital Fund and the Youth Opportunities Fund.

The Youth Capital Fund grant of £12,000 has been provided to fit out the Unit Galley to commercial standards in order to allow it to be used for both function catering and Cook/Steward training.

Unit Chairman, Commander Ian Dunkley RD RNR said, "This grant will enable us to complete an important phase of our building development programme that aims to provide our cadets with modern, state of the art facilities and a training environment of which they can be proud"

The Grant from the youth Opportunities Fund is for £2,600 to support the development of kayak training in the Unit and aims to provide training up to BCU 2 star level for up to 20 cadets in 2007.

2007 New Year Honour for Gravesend

Gravesend Unit were delighted to receive the news in the New Year's Honours List that the UMC Secretary, Mrs Brenda Heesom is to be awarded the MBE for services to the Sea Cadets in Gravesend. Brenda is now in her 47th continuous year as Unit Secretary.

Unit Chairman, Commander Ian Dunkley RD RNR, said, " I am very pleased that this tremendous service to the Unit and the Community has been recognised in this way. Brenda has undertaken sterling work for the Unit, often in the background, but she has been a constantly reliable source of support to me as Chairman over the past 8 years as I am sure she was to my predecessors."

Brenda said "I am very pleased to be honoured in this way but have no plans for retirement from my Unit duties as yet and look forward to continuing in post for the forseeable future".

Civic Parade January 2007

30 of the Ship's Company attended the Mayor's Civic Parade at Milton Church. 12 cadets formed a Guard of Honour who were inspected by the Mayor. Another cadet was selected at short notice to carry the Borough Standard, and others lined the pathway into the church.
