Middle Hill

Southern Area Training Facility

Middle Hill Expedition Training Centre is a ‘Standard Country’ campsite located between Horsham & Crawley in West Sussex, it is surrounded by 40 acres of mixed woodland giving an excellent feeling of isolation.

The immediate surrounding area covers a patchwork of footpaths and bridleways enabling a multitude of routes away from roads-the safest of Expedition Training environments. Thirty minutes away are the North and South Downs, and less than forty minutes drive lies Harrison Rocks, suitable for climbing.

The primary purpose for the our centre is to enable the training and execution of all Sea Cadet Expedition Training activities up to and including the Expedition Leader Grade 3 Award. This is in addition to Mountain Biking, Climbing & Abseiling. The centre also offers facilities for training in other SCC activities including Leadership, Physical Training, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, Communications Field
Training, Junior Adventure camps, and Marine Cadet Field Training.

The Centre does not have permanent Instructors and all activities must be organised and controlled by individual Units or Groups applying to use the Centre.

In the event you wish to gain further experience, refresh your skills or simply assist on Area Expedition Training Courses, you are encouraged to contact the Commanding Officer of Middle Hill or the Area Staff Officer Expedition Training

Sea Cadet Forums

This site is for the exclusive use of members of the UK Sea Cadet Corps. A secure website where members can feel safe and discuss the matters which are affecting them on a day to day basis.

We could not of course keep the discussion all "Sea Cadets" all the time so please feel free to use the many different forums and areas of the site including the gallery and the soon to be added "upgraded" arcade with loads of games to keep you amused during your lunch hour.

New members to the site will join in the user group "Cadet" which is our lowest access level. Once we are happy with your profile you will then be allocated to one of our several groups which in the main follow your Rate or Rank.

D of E

The award is a programme of activities for you to do in your spare time. There are three Awards to try for: Bronze, Silver, and Gold. Gold takes the longest to do and is the hardest one to try for - usually, people start off on the Bronze award.

You simply have to choose one activity under each of these headings, and do it for a set length of time:

Service: Be a local hero - help the community, the environment or even train to save a life...

Skills: Do something different, whether you fancy yourself as a fine artist or a trapeze artist, we’ve got something that will suit you...

Physical Recreation: Could you be the next Beckham? Or Anna Kournikova? Virtually any sport, dance or fitness activity can count...

Expedition: Go on an expedition and find yourself. Train, plan and complete an adventurous journey in the countryside on foot, horseback, boat or cycle...

Residential Project: Work as a team on a conservation, service or activity-based project for five days (this is for Gold Award Participants only).

It's fun, challenging and different... so go on, take the challenge!

Royal Navy

Relationship with the Royal Navy

The Sea Cadet Corps’ unique relationship with the Royal Navy goes right back to its foundation during the Crimean War (1854-1856) when returning sailors formed Naval Lads' Brigades in order to help orphans living in the back streets of sea ports.

Today the Royal Navy is our major stakeholder, providing for around 50% of our running costs annually. As well as providing financial support, the Royal Navy offers our Cadets exceptional opportunities to visit RN ships and even sail with them. A great number of Sea Cadet Units are affiliated to RN vessels and so enjoy a particularly close relationship. Many of our courses take place in naval land-based facilities, giving Cadets a chance to see at first hand what life in the Royal Navy is all about. Often those who return to civilian life after a career in the Navy find themselves volunteering back at their local Sea Cadet Unit, passing on all that they have learned about self-reliance, professionalism and teamwork.

Many Cadets who have spent their teenage years enjoying water-based activities and wearing their uniform with pride choose to take up a career in the Royal Navy. These recruits arrive highly-skilled and motivated, bringing commitment and loyalty and a spirit of service, developed during their time in the Sea Cadets. They are often those who stay with the Navy for many years, providing a vital level of stability and experience to what if often referred to as the nation’s senior Service.

Courses are run for Cadets and adult volunteers and courses available at SCTC Inskip include Cook/Steward, Expedition, Mountain Leader, Rock Climbing & Abseiling, Meteorology and RYA shorebased Day Skipper to Yachtmaster. Career courses are also available including the Senior Command Course and the National Officer Selection Boards. Royal Yachting Association

The RYA was founded in November 1875 as the Yacht Racing Association (YRA). Its primary purpose was to standardise the rules governing the measurement of racing yachts, so that boats of different classes could compete against each other.

The RYA is the UK’s national association for all forms of recreational and competitive boating, representing sailing, motorcruising, sportsboats, windsurfing, inland boating, powerboat racing and personal watercraft. It coordinates competition and/or development for all of the above at local, national and international level and is recognised by government as the negotiating body for these groups.

The Vetrans Agency

“Veterans-UK” - The New Name For Services To Veterans

On 2 April 2007, the Ministry of Defence created a new brand for services to veterans – Veterans-UK.

There are many organisations that provide help and support to UK veterans, both from Government and the voluntary sector. This can at times be confusing for those seeking help as they are unsure about which organisation provides which services and from whom to seek help.

Veterans-UK will be the single brand or banner covering a variety of different veterans services provided by a range of different organisations. It will form a single point for accessing information

BRITISH LEGION

The Legion was founded in 1921 as a voice for the ex-Service community and over 380,000 members continue to ensure that this voice does not go unheard. Although the needs of ex-Service people have changed over the years, we are still there to safeguard their welfare, interests and memory. British service people are in action around the world every day of the year. They know that if they need our support - now or in the future - the Legion is always on active duty for them.

HMS HOOD

History of the H.M.S. Hood Association

The H.M.S. Hood Association was established in 1975 by a group of several former Hood crew members, including two of the three survivors of her sinking. The Association has been going strong since that time. Our ranks are currently made up of the veteran sailors, their families, members of the bereaved families as well as enthusiasts interested in perpetuating the memory of the Mighty Hood and her crew. All members, regardless of veteran crew, families or enthusiasts, are considered full members. The Association is administered by a body of six key elected members known as the Association Committee. They meet on an as-needed basis and all Association activity is handled through them.
