Burgee Award Winner 2009

2009 Burgee Award

Another successful year!

Well that’s another RNP successfully done and dusted. As crazy as it is, we once again found ourselves giving it our all for our Royal Navy Parade (annual Inspection) and what a busy night.

This years Royal Navy Parade was conducted by Commander Jos Binns RN – Deputy Area Officer (South West Area) who was joined by joined by The Right Worshipful The Mayor of Gloucester (Councillor Chris Witts) accompanied by his Mayoress (Councillor Susan Witts, Clr Pam Tracey (Unit President), members of Gloucester Royal Naval Association, Hardwick Royal British Legion, Gloucester Civic Trust, Brunswick Square Association and many more prestige guest, supporters and parents.

We decided this year to showcase our level of commitment and involvement in the community by conducting the majority of our inspection in and around our community. The evening commenced with an official arrival and greeting with Commander Binns RN, His Worship The Mayor of Gloucester and guest who were escorted by into the barge arm next to the Mariners Church in Gloucester Docks. The Inspecting group was piped aboard by Able Cadets Josh Kay and led to a display of the Unit's Corp. of Drums to the delight of crowd that had gathered. The inspecting officers were then led on to inspect his Guard of Honour followed by a ceremonial routine of Colours and evening colours.

The groups departed the docks and headed for Brunswick Square Lawn who then witnessed the cadets perform two separate displays.

Units are assessed and then compared against sea cadet units across the whole of the UK. Awards are made in three basic categories: no award, indicating that the unit is below acceptable standards; Pennant, indicating that the unit is operating effectively; and Burgee awards, which awarded to the top achievers nationally.

We are once again delighted to have been awarded a Burgee efficiency. Our Officer in Charge, S/Lt (SCC) Yonna Berry RNR, commented that "It is a fair reflection of the hard work and commitment of the whole T.S. Gloucester team and its Cadets. As always, I would like to say massive thanks to the UMC, P&SA, Staff and most of all the cadets of TS Gloucester" A fantastic team, fantastic effort! BZ all round.

Marine Cadet Detachment given the 'Royal Title'

All Marine Cadet Detachments across the country have been given the Royal Seal of Approval by the Queen herself to officially be named 'Royal' Marine Cadets long the lines of the RM service.

If you would like more information or are interested in joining the Marine Cadets as Cadet or Staff Instructor, please feel free to come along and see what we are made of.

If you’ve got the bottle – tell it to the Marines! And pretty soon you could be following in the footsteps of the Royal Marine commandos; the cream of Britain’s fighting forces.

Learn the combat skills of camouflage and concealment, reach a rendezvous with a map and compass or just the stars to guide you and get to grips with the firepower of some of the latest weapons.

You can test your talents against one of the toughest challenges in the book and develop new skills to give you a head start in life.

And to really impress your friends, there’s a bonus in store, for when you change out of your combat kit, for parades and ceremonial occasions you’ll wear the famous "blues" best uniform of the Royal Marines.

As you’d expect, the MCD are highly disciplined so that each member of a "troop" can depend one hundred percent on his mates. You’ll learn self-discipline and teamwork – all the battle savvy of the fighting soldier.

And because you’re part of a Sea Cadet Unit there are all the water-borne activities too. MCDs are open to boys and girls from age 13 and promotion prospects are good. So when you make Sergeant, you’ll be leading your own troops into firefights where every split second counts.

So why not move on from the action man make believe of computer games....

become a Marine Cadet -- and get real.
