About the Sea Cadet Corps

The Sea Cadet Corps is a national youth organisation for boys and girls aged 12 to 18. Gloucester Unit also has a Junior Section for those ages between 10 and 12.
It is open to all young people regardless of race, religion or colour and we draw our members from all backgrounds.

The Corps is disciplined and uniformed, but it is certainly not para-military, nor does membership imply a career in the Services or Merchant Navy.

Our Aim

The aim of the Sea Cadet Corps is to help young people towards responsible adulthood by encouraging valuable personal attributes and high standards of conduct using a nautical theme based on the customs of the Royal Navy.

Through adventurous activities Cadets become self reliant, and through teamwork Cadets develop consideration and respect for others. The Corps encourages high personal standards and a sense of purpose, and provides a sound foundation for future Careers.

HMS Gloucester

HMS Gloucester

T.S. Gloucester is proud to be affiliated with HMS Gloucester.
HMS Gloucester is a Type 42 (Batch 3) Destroyer and was built by Vosper Thorneycroft at Woolston, Southampton and launched on 2nd November 1982 by Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Gloucester.

She is the tenth warship to bear the name and continues a long and proud tradition. Of particular note is the ninth HMS Gloucester who earned the nickname 'The Fighting G' for her distinguished actions during the defense of Crete during WW2.

The present HMS Gloucester was one of the last four of the class to be built. The batch 3 vessels have a lengthened hull design giving better seakeeping qualities and greater endurance. The Type 42s provide the backbone of the the Royal Navy's anti-air capability. Their primary role is to provide area air defence to a group of ships. In addition to their role as an air defence platform the Type 42 Destroyers operate independently carrying out patrol and boarding operations. The Type 42s are due to be replaced by the Type 45 destroyers when they enter service from 2007.

The present HMS Gloucester is notable for her actions during the first Gulf War. In the early hours of the 25th of February 1991, an Iraqi Seersucker missile was fired against the USS Missouri, an American warship HMS Gloucester was escorting. In less than 90 seconds Gloucester had destroyed the Seersucker with 2 Sea Darts, in what proved to be the first validated, successful engagement of a missile, by a missile, in combat at sea.

The ship retains links with the Royal Gloucestershire Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiment and the City of Gloucester. The ship's crest features a horseshoe, part of the City's Tudor Arms. The ships motto is "Prorsum" which means Onwards.
