Glasgow River Festival 2009

Glasgow Sea Cadets took part again for the 4th Year running in the Glasgow River festival by the Clydeside.

Cadets erected a stall by the Quayside of the Tall Ship S.V Glenlee to raise funds and to promote the Sea Cadet Corps.

Over the course of the weekend, the unit raised just under £600.

We are Sailing.....

8 lucky Cadets and 2 Staff had the time of their lives during a weeks sailing onboard the Clyde Challenger from Rhu. CLYDE CHALLENGER is a Clipper 60 ocean racing yacht previously named “Glasgow Clipper” and has completed 4 Round the World Races. Modified for her role as a Youth Sail Training Vessel, the yacht has had an extensive refit in 2006. Displacing 35 tonnes with an overall length of 18 metres, the yacht is capable of taking crews wherever they wish to travel.

Together the cadets had to plan and sail their own routes with the crew there for guidance. Cadets got to berth up for the night in places Such as Campbeltown, Ardrossan and Tarbert.Cadets even got the swimming pools in the Campbeltown leisure centre to themselves to enjoy some time in the water instead of on it. Plans were made to head to the Emerald Isle for the day but bad weather halted us there but never downed the youngsters spirits.

But the work didn't stop at the sailing. Cadets (and staff) were split into three watches, rotating duties throughout the day. Cadets were out of their beds early in the morning to cook breakfast and do the tidying up before we left port. Cadets also had to cook meals from scratch(the skipper having banned Pot Noodles) and lovely dishes such as Chilli, Stew and Curry were prepared.

They were also responsible for the cleaning of the boat from bow to stern. This included the toilets, but in good old Sea Cadet fashion they took this upon their stride and got on with the task.

Glasgow River Festival 2007

adets from Clyde North District Sea Cadets played a vital support role in the smooth running of the Glasgow River Festival this year.

Sea Cadets from Glasgow, Airdrie & Coatbridge, East Kilbride, Lochaber & Oban units throughout the weekend assisted in bringing ships of all shapes and sizes into pontoons & the quayside. From large sailing vessals such as the Tenacious to small yachts & power boats the Sea Cadets were involved.
Plenty of time was available for all cadets to get a look around at the attractions including a private tour on board HMS Bangor, a Royal Navy Sandown Class Mine Hunter, trips on board the Royal Marine Commando's Rigid Raiders, and a look at the Sea Cadet Corp's Flagship, the TS Royalist, a great amount of fun was had.
