History of Fishguard Sea Cadets
The Fishguard Sea Cadet Unit, known as TS 'Skirmisher' was established in 1942, with Headquarters in West Street, Fishguard, although there is evidence that there was some form of Cadet Corps operating prior to this, from about 1940, with meetings on the station platform. Unfortunately memories are hazy from this period and the 1942 date is documented as the year of being accepted into the Navy League.
The first Commanding Officer was a local Headmaster and the first Chief Instructor was an officer of HM Coastguard. In September 1946, TS 'SKIRMISHER' moved to it's present Headquarters in a 19th Century warehouse building in Lower Fishguard, which was purchased for £300 and adapted entirely by it's own fund-raising and physical effort. As a matter of interest the boat park next door could have been purchased at the same time for a further £50 but this was declined as funds were low. The land would have been priceless for the unit in this day and age.
The opening ceremony was performed by Major Gwilym Lloyd-George, MP for Pembrokeshire and the son of David Lloyd George. He told how, in the aftermath of war Britain had never stood in greater need of team-work and self discipline. He dedicated the new building to those ideals which have never altered in TS 'SKIRMISHER' from that day to this. Although the catchment area is small compared to many of the town and city units, Fishguard has always had cause to be proud of their Sea Cadet Corps with many National, Area and District trophies in a variety of disciplines over the years.
There has always been a dazzling display of trophies on display, culminating in the unit winning the Area Stephenson Trophy and the prestigious Canada Cup for the first time in 1994.

McBeath Trophy
This trophy was donated by Rear Admiral J E H McBeath CB DSO DSC DL who served as Honorary Commodore of the SCC from 1958 to 1975. It is awarded annually to a Unit which has put up a particularly meritorious performance during the year and is worthy of special recognition. Fishguard Sea Cadets were nominated for the award and represented the South West Area. They unfortunately did not win.
