T.S Explorer - Unit {605}

About our Unit

The Commanding Officer & Unit Staff

The Training and discipline required to run a large organisation such as our`s, takes a huge amount of effort and commitment, we welcome any offers of assistance and we have no minimum committment, all you need is a big smile and a few spare hours. It is not essential to like teenagers, we can always find you a role maintaining buildings, gardening or helping with the administration, during the day.

Getting involved, to help your self and develop new skills and experience.

It is important to remember that you do not need any experience in the navy or sea cadets to come along and help us. We have positions for people who want to turn up and help in civilian clothes, however we can get you into uniform if you would like to take things a little bit further.

The whole unit is totally dependent upon volunteers of all ages and experience, who work hard as a team to deliver safe, fun activities. We can offer adults nationally recognised training, experience and qualifications in dinghy sailing, kayaking, windsurfing and power boating. You can also become an instructor for skills such as marine engineering, seamanship and cooking.

A Big Thank You

Thank you to all our sponsors, without whom we would not be able to continue our work for the cadets.

The Cadets

The cadets - the most important element of every successful unit.

We try to make every aspect of our activities fun and adventurous. It is important for young people to be able to have ago at new activities, gaining new skills and qualifications builds self confidence and maturity.

We accept junior cadets from the age of ten years and they progress up to fully enrolled sea cadets at 12 years old, and go through to 18, where they can become staff.
New recruits : Between 10 and 12 years old, new recruits join the Junior Section.
From 12 years and upwards, they join as New Entry Cadets and enrol with the senior cadets after a probationary period.

As a Unit we will accept any child that applies, providing we have the space. Because we are a Sea Cadet Unit we have high expectations of behaviour and discipline, we find children like knowing where the boundaries are and thrive in an environment that is much more structured than school. For those children that have lost the support of a family, we can offer an alternative extended family and lots of friends. Cadets can live anywhere, not just Evesham. Because we are out between Honeybourne and South Littleton you have to have understanding parents that can drive you to the Unit two evenings a week.

We offer hands on training and sport, you do not have to able to read and write or be doing well at school. The things we teach include basic life skills, such as getting on in a group, how to cook, how to concentrate, how to solve lifes puzzles and problems like cleaning shoes properly, how to iron a shirt and dress smartly.

Uniform and most equipment, is provided by the Unit, although parents must pay a returnable unifrom deposit.

Parents

If you are curious about what we can do for your child, come a see us on any parade night, just turn up you do not need to contact us first. If you struggle to find a car on a Monday or Thursday evening we might be able to help you or introduce you to other parents who might car share. Children with special needs and learning difficulties are particularly welcome, we have never found a child yet, who is slow to learn something naughty. All our activities are hands on and practical. You can stay with your child on a parade night if you think you have to, sit in our nice comfortable wardroom and have a cup of tea, while you are waiting.

Time to your self and ease the pressure. A challenge for your son or daughter in a safe and managed environment.

Each child does have to pay a weekly subscription usually be direct debit and for some courses you also have to pay a small amount. Where possible we keep the costs as low as possible and you can pay for larger amounts such as the £50 for the Royalist trip by installments on a weekly basis. Many of a our trips are grant funded because we have some very generous sponsors and you are only paying a nominal amount to cover food or transport. We appreciate that with larger families, paying for three children to go away at the same time can be a financial struggle and we do spread the costs.

A cadet that does well, will go away on many weekend and even week long courses at specialist training centres, giving any hard pressed parent a respite from their little darling teenager.

The Parents and Unit Supporters

Our Parents and Supporters Association is desperately seeking new volunteers. The present group of supporters have been hard at work for approximately four years now and require new idea`s and enthusiasm to meet the fund raising and logistical demands of a growing unit.

Since the unit was formed it has has doubled in numbers, we now are bursting at the seams with 60 cadets and many hands make light work. This is a great opportunity for anyone to share in what really is a great sucess for the youth of the Vale of Evesham and surrounding villages.

Come to the unit on a parade night to see for yourself what you could be part of.

The Unit President

We recieve good support from our long standing President - Cllr John Smith.
As an ex-cadet of many years ago, he appreciate`s what the youth of today stand to gain and also understands the amount of work that the adult volunteers put in to help the community. Our profile in the local community is most important and we feel proud to have John as our President.

The Chairman & Unit Management

The Unit Management Team (UMT) are the Trustees for the Unit, Evesham Sea Cadets is an independent charity. The UMT manage the financial and organisational issues related to providing & maintaining facilities.
Evesham Sea Cadets receives no direct funding from the Ministry of Defence, all the staff are unpaid volunteers, and we have to raise all the money required to run the unit.

We particularly need help from people with experience of fundraising, health and safety and financial issues. Committee meetings are monthly, usually the third Wednesday in the month, please confirm the date and time before coming along, new members are always welcome.
