About the Sea Cadet Corps

The Sea Cadet Corps is a nationwide voluntary uniformed youth organisation, open to all young people aged 12 to 18, Marine Cadets for young people aged 13 to 18 and with Junior Sections open to those of 10 to 12 years of age. It is Britain's most successful nautical organisation for the development of young people with Units run by enthusiastic adult volunteers.

We have a rank structure modelled on that of the Royal Navy, giving Cadets an opportunity to progress and take up positions of responsibility as they acquire skills and seniority. On reaching 18, many Cadets choose to stay on as adult instructors, when their training and talents become invaluable.

The remit of the Sea Cadets is to provide Serious Fun, friendship, adventure and learning new skills based on waterborne and land based activities.

National Grid help Edmonton Sea Cadets get ship shape with £5,000 donation

Press release issued by Nationa Grid

Sea Cadets will be giving their land based training centre a much needed refurbishment after receiving a £5000 donation from National Grid.

Known as TS Plymouth, the Sea Cadets' unit is located off the River Lee towpath in Edmonton. However after six decades of use the facility was ready for a makeover. National Grid’s donation will help fund renovations to the kitchen, shower block and boat shed.

National Grid is currently working in the area refurbishing the overhead electricity lines between Waltham Cross and Tottenham. This vital work is being carried out by the Electricity Alliance, a partnership between National Grid and Balfour Beatty.

National Grid Project Engineer Simon Chandler, said: “The Sea Cadet Corps do a fantastic job teaching young people new skills in an environment which offers them friendship, fun and adventure. National Grid is delighted to help TS Plymouth with the facility refurbishment and support the hard work and commitment by their cadets and instructors. “

Electricity Alliance contractors, Red 7 Marine have also offered to support the Cadet's refurbishment plans by donating three boats to add to TS Plymouth’s fleet.

Delighted Edmonton Unit Commanding Officer, Chief Petty Officer Tony Stevens said: “We're really grateful to the Electricity Alliance for their support; it's a great boost to the young people who use the facilities. We are all very excited; this is a really positive step for the unit and will enable us to offer a better and more varied training programme than is already available.”

This has been a very successful year so far for the unit. At their annual unit review they were awarded a “Burgee” the first time in the unit’s 62 years of training cadets. A “Burgee” is awarded to those units which have achieved a “very good” standard or better.
