The new HMS Bulwark

HMS Bulwark and MV Ocean D

HMS Bulwark, the second of a new class of assault ships, was launched at the BAE Systems shipyard at Barrow-in-Furness on 15 November 2001. The seventh ship to carry the name, she was named by Lady Walker, the wife of General Sir Michael Walker.
Formally commissioned into the Royal Navy on 28 April 2005, HMS Bulwark has recently emerged from an intensive eight month maintenance period which has enhanced the ship’s propulsion system and improved her capabilities in a number of other areas. Having recently visited her affiliated County of Durham, where the ship took part in Falkland 25 commemorative events and renewed links with many of her affiliations, the ship returned to sea to conduct a demanding programme of trials and training and also takes part in Devonport Naval Base’s Falkland 25 events. Having taken Summer Leave the ship has just commenced a 7 week period of Basic Operational Sea Training designed to prepare it for subsequent operational tasking. We hope you enjoy your visit to HMS Bulwark's website and find it useful and interesting.

A little about the sea cadet corps

a power boat

The sea cadet corps is a nationwide voluntary uniformed (NOT PRE SERVICE) youth organisation, open to all young people aged 10 to 18, marine cadets for young people aged 13 to 18 & with our junior sections open to those of 10 to 12 years of age. It is Britain’s most successful nautical organisation for the development of young people with units that are run by enthusiastic adult volunteers.

We do have a rank structure that is modelled on that of the royal navy for the sea cadets and the royal marines for the marine cadets, giving cadets an opportunity to progress & take up a position of responsibility as they acquire skills & seniority. On reaching the age of 18, many cadets choose to stay on as adult instructors, when their training and talents become invaluable.

The remit of the sea cadets is to provide fun, friendship, adventure & learning new skills based on waterborne & land based activities.

Lt Cdr(SCC) Fred Townley RNR (RTD)

It is with deep sadness to report the death of Lt Cdr Fred Townley on Wednesday 10 October 2007

Fred joined the Corps in 1956 as a direct entry CPO, and went on to become a Lt Cdr He served as Commanding Officer at Enfield and Clapton units before becoming ASO(Seamanship) until December 2006.where he took over as District Staff Officer Seamanship at the same time assisting at Clapton Unit.
One of Fred's proudest achievements was rebuilding Clapton Unit and having it officially opened by Prince Andrew.
Anyone who knew Fred will miss his sense of humor and passion for the Corps. Fred was aged 70.
