POC Stefan LeRoux helps Sea Cadets Celebrate Launch Of Cadet 150 With A Royal Audience
POC Stefan LeRoux aged 17, joined six other Sea Cadets to meet HM The Queen on Wednesday 17 February 2010. The youngsters were part of 26 cadets drawn from across all of the Cadet Forces who were lucky enough to secure a Royal audience with Her Majesty in recognition of the great work they have all achieved as young cadets.
The cadets are also in town to celebrate the launch of Cadet 150, a national theme which hopes to capture the public’s attention and focus it on celebrating 150 years of the cadet movement in Britain and inspire others to get involved with their local Cadet force.
As part of the celebrations all the cadets met Kevan Jones, under secretary of state and minister for Veterans and Dawn Butler, minister for young citizens and youth engagement MP for Brent South, outside 10 Downing Street for a quick photo before being whisked off for a tour of London.
Cadet 150 is an opportunity to recognise the role young people play in supporting their local communities and how the cadet forces: Sea Cadets, Army Cadets, Air Cadets and Combined Cadet Force help support young people into adult hood by giving them the chance to learn new skills and boost their confidence via team work.
During 2010 a host of special events will take place to mark the 150th anniversary of the cadet movement. Founded in 1860, the cadet movement is one of the oldest and most successful voluntary youth organisations in the world. A force to be reckoned with, today it numbers 131,000 young people led by 25,000 adult volunteers in 3,000 sites across the country.

Senior Girls Triumph at National Football
Cambridge and Bedford joint Senior Girls 5 a Side Football team played exceptionally well to win the SCC National 5 a Side Competition held at DCAE Cosford.
All of the girls played exceptionally well and the team only conceeded 1 goal throughout the whole competition. They won through to the Semi Finals on the Saturday afternoon and won their match 2-0.
The final on the Sunday was against Southern Area and they immediately took control of the match and were 1-0 up at half time. In the second half they could have scored 3 more goals but were happy to score just the one to secure a 2-0 win to take the title. One of the girls from the team was also named player of the tournament.
All of the girls thoroughly enjoyed themselves over the weekend and so did the spectators although I ma sure we were more nervous than they were.
Well Done Girls

Area ET 2009
Following the teams success at District ET they made the trip to Ashby-De-La-Zouch for the Area ET competition for a weekend competing against 8 other teams in the Junior and Senior Section from Eastern Area.
Both teams did exceptionally well for their first outing at Area as did the Team Leaders. LC Stefan Le Roux was runner up in the Senior Team Leader competition which was a great result for only his second ever competition as Team Leader and OC Adam Francis was 4th in the Junior Team Leader Commpeition which for a 13 year old in only his second competition as Team Leader was a fantastic result.
The team events however were a different story with both the Junior and Senior teams coming 1st - yes winning - both of the team events on their first outing! It has been well over a decade since Cambridge had an Area ET trophy in the cabinet.
Well done teams fabulous result!!

Thrapston Boating Weekend 2009
The weekend of the 5th September saw the unit embark on a weekend of boating at the Eastern Area Boat Station in Thrapston.

All of the cadets took part in either sailing or power boating with every single cadet gaining yet more qualifications on the water.
A big thank you to Slt (SCC) Shane Daly RNR who was our SI for the weekend, and PO (SCC) Tom Griffiths for teaching the Power Boating.

Pre Bisley and Bisley 2009
Following the Area Regatta some of the Bisley team were travelling back from Beckingham on the Sunday to travel straight back up to Beckingham for Pre Bisley.
The team of PPO Niall Cullum, LC Sam Barrett, LC Stefan Le Roux, AC Naomi Hayes and AC Jess Markham left Cambridge on Sunday afternoon for 3 days of training at Pre Bisley. Although wet at times they secured the rifles and were prepared for the move to Bisley on Thursday.
They arrived safely ready to begin the Inter Service Cadet Rifle Meet on Friday starting with the Individual competitions at 300 and 600 yards. All of the team put in some very good scores with lots of V bulls which stood them in good stead for the Saturday competitions.
On the Saturday they competed in the Patriotic Individual Challenge match at 300 and 500 yards and the Frankfort Team event at 300 and 500 yards and again some good scores were put in but specifically from PPO Cullum and LC Barrett.
These scores with the individual scores are then added together to form the Cadet 100. These are the top 100 shots from all 3 of the cadet forces plus the Royal Canadian Army Cadets.
This year we had 2 of our team in the Cadet 100 with LC Sam Barrett placed 21st and PPO Niall Cullum placed 63rd out of 500 or so cadets. This is an achievement in itself but more was to follow.
The National Sea Cadet prize giving followed on the Saturday evening at Pirbright camp and the team came 4th in the National Sea Cadet Competition - our highest place for a while and LC Sam Barrett won the SCC National Individual competition by 0.1 points which equates to 1 V bull so it couldnt have been much closer.
On the Sunday the team shot the Watts Bowl team competition at 600 yards. Following this match the SCC top 16 shots compete shoulder to shoulder wth the ATC and ACF and the Canadians and we had PPO Niall Cullum and LC Sam Barrett in that team where they both won National Colours. LC Barrett was also the top Sea Cadet shot in the Sea Cadet 16.
Follwing presentations on the point of the Cadet 100 badges and National Colours we lined the route to the Pavillion for the Butt markers march past where AC Jess Markham was runner up in the Best Butt Marker Competition.
At the ISCRM Prize giving LC Sam Barret won the Navy League Cup for the highest placed Sea Cadet in the cadet 100 and came runner up in the Squire trophy for the highest placed Sea Cadet in the Grand Aggregate.
So overall the best set of results we have ever had at Cambridge and Eastern Area so well done to all of the team and the coach Lt (SCC) Andy Freestone RNR, but special mention to LC Sam Barrett for the best performance by a Cambridge cadet ever at Bisley.

Area Regatta 2009

Area Sailing 2009
Once again LC Lily Freeman entered the Area Sailing as an Open age group Pico sailor and for the first time AC Naomi Hayes joined her as another Pico Sailor..
After a great start Lily was in second place. Then a couple of bad races saw her discard the worst race but she was narrowly beaten into 3rd place so just missing out on a place at Race Training for Nationals this year.
For her first outing at Area Sailing AC Naomi Hayes did very well coming a very creditable 6th out of 18 sailors entered.
Well done Lily and Naomi heres to next year.

National Drill 2009
Following a busy Easter Camp and time off from Colour Party training, the Colour party team had 1 final evenings practice before heading down to Plymouth for the National Finals at HMS Raleigh.
By virtue of reaching the finals they are one of the top 7 teams in the UK and this is an achievement in itself.
After a lot of waiting and a few stressful times the inspection was complete and the routine was finished. The routine was performed and it was the best performance a Cambridge Colour Party had ever put on.
The team then had to wait an agonising 5 and a half hours to find out the results at the prizegiving. They were awarded third place which meant that they had attended 3 National competitions and come away with a medal each time and been one of the tope 3 teams in the country for the past 3 years, which is a fantastic result.
Well done to the team who put in an immense amount of hard work. It all starts again in November!!
|
Easter Camp 2009
For the first time the current staff decided to organise a unit Easter Camp to the Derbyshire Dales for 2009.
5 days of camping, walking, exploring, visiting, and Bar B Ques awaited the group. It was very very wet for the first day and a half but after that it was dry thankfully and the kit eventually dried out.
The teams walked through the peak district National park and monsal head whilst also visitng Matlock Bath for Fish and Chips and the old fashioned amusements and sweet shops.
A great time was had by all and we look forward to visiting again in Summer 2010.

After a week of intense tests Mat was informed on the Friday that he has been accepted as a musician playing the Clarinet and Violin.

We had a sailing crew, a canoeing crew and 1 in the Pulling crew. The results were great with Jnr Daniel Newman in the winning canoeing team and Jnr Brandon Spring in the Runners Up team.
Jnr Jess Cornell was in the Runners Up team in the pulling and the sailors couldnt actually sail race as it was too windy.
A great time was had by all and we even managed to get the tents down before it rained.

Pre Bisley and ISCRM 2008
This year saw 2 teams from Cambridge entered in the National SCC and Inter Service Full Bore shooting competition at Bisley.
The 'A' Team consisted of slightly more experienced shots but were missing one of the best shots in the unit due to school commitments. The 'B' Team were the baby team of up and coming Cambridge shots for the next few years to gain experince and knowledge of the sport.
Both teams did exceptionally well but the outstanding shot once again was POC Niall Cullum. He was selected for the SCC National 16 shooting the Somerset Cup shoulder to shoulder with the ATC, ACF and RCACF. As a result of his performance he was placed 3rd in the SCC team and the CCRS Navy League cup competition.
Well done Niall and to both teams!!!

After 4 races the wind had all but disappeared so the last race was shortened.

POC Collis attends launch of Navy Board cadet 2007
Cambridge Sea Cadet to be honoured by First Sea Lord on board HMS Ark Royal
20 March 2007 – On Thursday 22 March 17-year-old Matthew Collis from Cambridge Sea Cadet Unit will be named Navy Board Cadet for Eastern Area by the First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral Sir Jonathon Band KCB ADC, during a ceremony on board HMS Ark Royal in Portsmouth marking the rededication of the famous aircraft carrier.
The position of Navy Board Cadet is new. Matt is one of just six Sea Cadets selected for this special honour from the 13,000 Sea Cadet force throughout the United Kingdom. The award is being made in recognition of the outstanding example he has set in the Sea Cadet Corps in Eastern Area.
Throughout his year of office he will accompany members of the Navy Board and other high-ranking members of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines at any official ceremonial occasions that take place in the area. During these events he will also brief the senior officers on issues of importance to the Sea Cadet Corps.
As well as giving Matt a privileged insight into top-level Naval policy and the work of very senior serving officers, this initiative is expected to raise the profile of the Sea Cadet Corps as a whole by exposing these six high calibre young people to senior representatives of professional bodies and other prominent individuals.
Commander Neville Gaunt RN, director of training policy and plans for the Sea Cadets, said today: “Since the concept of Navy Board Cadets is a brand new one, there will be much ground-breaking work for Matt to do. He has an outstanding record in the Sea Cadet Corps and I have every confidence that he will represent the organisation at its very best in his dealings with some extremely influential people”.
Matt is currently studying for the BTEC Higher National Diploma in Uniformed Services at Cambridge Regional College. On completion of his studies he hopes to join the Royal Marines Band Service as a musician.
The Navy Board comprises the First Sea Lord, Commander in Chief Fleet, Second Sea Lord, Naval Member for Logistics, Controller of the Navy, Assistant Chief of the Naval Staff and 2nd Permanent Under Secretary of State for Defence.
