Meet the Staff

Lt (SCC) Amanda O'Donoghue RNR - Commanding Officer
Lt O'Donoghue RNR joined St Albans unit GNTC as a cadet in 1988 before she was old enough and for 2 years her parents had to be at the unit with her on parade nights and subsequently they became committee members. Her father became chairman of the P&SA and then chairman of the UMC.
She attained the highest cadet rate of POC and took part in all cadet activities. She was an active swimmer competing at Inter Service level for the Sea Cadets from the age of 12. She was the first female Sea Cadet gold medal winner at Inter Service Swimming. She also shot at Inter Service level for the Sea Cadets at Bisley for a number of years.
She became an adult instructor and was promoted to PO(SCC) in 1997. She also became qualified as Drill Instructor and an IM Instructor and assessor. She is also a seamanship instructor and has boating and Expedition Training qualifications.
She transferred for a short while to Rickmansworth and Watford unit who were short of staff before moving up to Cambridge to live.
In 2003 she took on the post of Assistant Area Staff Officer for Instructional Method for Eastern Area.
Amanda was educated at Marlborough School in St Albans and completed her A Levels and decided against full time University. Instead she undertook a degree with the Open University.
She was promoted to Sub Lt (SCC) RNR following succesful completion of the National Officers Selection board at HMS Raleigh in 2003.
She has recently completed her Command Course to be appointed Commanding Officer. She has been at Cambridge for 7 years and has coached teams from Cambridge at Bisley and the Area shooting competition. She also trained the unit colour party who came 2nd at the National Competition this year.

Chief Petty Officer (SCC) Angie Maynard - Unit First Lieutenant
CPO Maynard Joined the SCC before she was born as her parents were already involved.
She was educated at Putteridge High School and went to Dunstable College to further her qualifications in her favourite subject - engineering.
She joined Luton Unit GNTC in 1984 and reached Cadet Petty Officer in 1987 (Boys were Petty Officer Cadets). During her very sucessful cadet career CPO Maynard was part of the Mountbatten trophy winning GNTC Section in 1988 and 1989 for the best GNTC section in the UK (GNTC equivalent of Canada Trophy) and a National Drill winner in the same years taking the Squad commanders invidual trophy as well.
Then in 1989 she left Luton Unit to join the Royal Navy as a Helicopter Engineer with 829 Squadron based in Portland. She tri trained and was a flight Captain responsible for signing off cabs as fit to fly. Her claim to fame is she grounded HRH Prince Andrews cab for a safety defect and wouldnt let him fly. She also passed her AIB to become an officer.
She left the Navy and re joined the Corps 1994 as an adult PO at Ampthill unit. She reached the rate of Chief Petty Officer in 2001 and then transferrred her skills across to Cambridge SCC where she promptly became the First Lieutenant.
She is currently the Units Mechanical Engineering Instructor, Health and Safety Officer, Cambs and Beds District IM assesor, a Pulling Instructor, and an Expedition Leader. She also enjoys canoeing when her knees permit it!!!

Lieutenant (SCC) Andrew Freestone RNR - Unit Senior Divisional Officer
Lt Freestone was also involved in the Sea Cadets long before he was old enough as 2 of his older brothers and his cousin were already involved along with his mum and dad. His Naval connections go back to his Dad who served in the Royal Navy during WWII. His mum used to take him to the unit when he was small and do the stand easy. His brother then followed in their fathers footsteps and joined the RN.
Lt Freestone was educated at St Bedes catholic school and joined the unit in 1974. He reached the highest cadet rate of Petty Officer Cadet and then became a Cadet Instructor at the age of 18. He qualified as a Drill instructor in the 80's and became a Chief in 1987.
He sat his Area Officer Selection board for promotion to Sub Lieutenant in 1993 and was promoted further to Lt in 1995.
During his adult career he has sucessfully coached many Cambridge shooting teams and in 1996 coached them to the National Small Bore and Full Bore target trophies in the same year. He also enjoys Expeditions, Canoeing and Power boating.

PPO(SCC) Niall Cullum
Former Petty Officer Cadet and Lord Lieutenants cadet for Cambridgeshire, Niall joins the staff and brings a wealth of experience and skills with him.

TI Ian Edwards
Ian was an ex cadet at Cambridge many years ago before leaving to Join the Royal Navy. His son joined the unit recently and Ian decided to come back as amember of staff.
CI Katherine Rosensteil
Katherine has been with us since she was 12 years old and after achieveing LC status became a member of staff. She is currenty with us part time whilst studying at University
