Unit History
We are compiling the history of the Unit. If you have any information to add to the details below, or any corrections to make, please let us know( e-mail to mischofield@fsmail.net )
The Unit was probably first formed in the late 1930’s. It was certainly operating successfully in 1942. It was based at Kent’s Bank School. For a period from 1945 until 1959, the Unit seems to have stopped operating. In 1959, the Unit was restarted at Normanton School. In 1975, the Unit moved to premises in Ashwood Dale, owned by ICI. The building used to be an Isolation Hospital. In 1975? The HQ was changed to the Thermal Baths in The Crescent. In 1978, came the final move to the present site at Silverlands on land owned by the Ministry of Defence.
Commanding Officers
1938? C.O. Commander Cook
1960? C.O. John Rodgers
C.O. Wing Commander Reg Hyde (or High)
1968? C.O. Laurie Dunn
1975 C.O. Viv Green
1978 C.O. Ken Fowler
C.O. Bruce Luckman
Unit Activities
In the early days at Kent’s Bank School, the main activities were general seamanship, small arms drill, gymnastics and sailing. Sailing used to take place on Sundays at Combs Reservoir, Chapel-en-le Frith, after which the C.O. would take everyone back to his house in Chapel for afternoon tea in the garden. The cadets met on two nights a week and were able to use the equipment in the gymnasium. Boxing instruction was given by PO Webb, a very well known local boxer. In the school yard was a platform on a pole about 12 feet high, with access by a rope ladder. This was used for leadline sounding practice. Much fun was had with this.
By 1942, the Unit had 60/70 cadets. The Unit had a good band, trained by CPO Slack. The Unit was well known for its gymnastic displays and its parade drills. There was certainly a performance in The Crescent in 1944.
From 1959 onwards at Normanton School, the cadets came from the school, which had many pupils from overseas, as well as the town and surrounding villages. At this time, the Unit could put on a guard of very tall lads and so was popular, often travelling to Sheffield, Stockport, Manchester and Chesterfield.
Information provided by Bill Merrick, President of Buxton and High Peak RNA and Lieutenant Viv Green, former C.O.
