District Pulling Handling Competition 2010

The team are given a dress inspection as part of the competition. Points are awarded for the cadets' standard of uniform, including the colour and style of trainers worn.

LtCdr Jennings and PO Goodwin supported the event and assisted the District Staff with logistics and admin support.

The crew for the District Handling Team were, from left to right:

Ordinary Cadet Godfrey
Leading Cadet Butterfield
Able Cadet Doyle
Ordinary Cadet Grainger

Sculling involves one member of the crew, usually the coxswain, propelling the boat using a single oar. The technique is difficult to get right and marks in this section are not easily earned.

The coxswain of this year's team was Able Cadet Goodwin.

Pulling Handling isn't about going anywhere fast. Likened to ceremonial drill in a boat, it is a real test of seamanship, teamwork and coordination demonstrating the coxswain's trust and confidence in his crew, and involves real effort.

Before coming back alongside at the end of the competition the team are given the task of recovering a simulated man-overboard.

After consulting with the Senior Staff it was not possible to separate the two. It was an unusual decision but both cadets earned the privilege.

Both cadets will shortly be promoted to the highest rate in the Corps: Cadet Petty Officer - the first female cadet to be rated so highly in 12 years.
