What are we about?
We are a Bath-based, small and friendly unit in the Sea Cadet Corps, offering fun activity-based training for 10 to 18-year-olds from all backgrounds. Situated directly on the bank of the River Avon we are able to do plenty of boating activities in the summer, and are lucky enough to have adequate facilities for classroom and indoor sporting activities in the winter. As a result, we're busy pretty much all through the year!
The Sea Cadet Corps is a uniformed youth organisation administered by the Sea Cadet Association and sponsored by the Ministry of Defence.

Corps' History
The Sea Cadet Corps is the oldest, most enduring youth organisation in Britain. The Corps can trace its heritage back to the Crimean War, when, in 1856, sailors returning home from the campaign set up "Naval Lads Brigades" to give disadvantaged youngsters a taste of self discipline and leadership. From those early beginnings in the back streets of Britain's seaports, the Sea Cadets has grown into a 16,000-strong youth movement with 400 units dotted across the length and breadth of the country.
Based on maritime traditions the Corps is pledged to uphold Britannia's naval heritage, which we do through a mixture of education, experience, and an ethos that makes having fun the most important goal of all.

The Corps Today
Although supported and partly funded by the Royal Navy, the Sea Cadet Corps is not a pre-service (or in any way para-military) organisation. The training programme the cadets undertake, whilst underpinned by seamanship and nautical skills, offers recognised qualifications in subjects such as electrical and mechanical engineering, computing, communications and catering which stand our Cadets in good stead whatever career they pursue.
Each Sea Cadet Unit has developed close ties with the local community, and is often involved with local fundraising events, activities and initiatives.

Training Activities
The Sea Cadets is primarily a training organisation, offering many activities which young people can become involved in. These are divided into three categories.
Firstly, a Cadet can specialise in any number of nine 'Specialisations' Seamanship, Communications, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Cooks and Stewards, Writers and Stores, Physical Training and First Aid. The courses often contain recognised qualifications, giving our Cadets an edge whatever they choose to do in life.
Secondly, Cadets can also choose to study a number of Proficiencies - meteorology, expedition training, target shooting, sub-aqua diving and usic are all on offer at Bath, and many of our Cadets take up more than one.
Lastly (and by far the most popular) we offer both canoeing and boat work, training on everything from dinghies on the river to offshore power boats. The Corps follows the British Canoe Union (BCU) and Royal Yachting Association (RYA) training schemes, and our Cadets have plenty of opportunities to take exams and courses.
The Royal Navy supports the Sea Cadet Corps in many of these activities. RN Establishments around the country host many of the training courses and provide resources, which Units (and the general public) do not normally have access to.
Sea Cadets from Bath regularly take part in competitions across the country, competing at both the District and National levels.
Sometimes they even win!
