Six cadets were provided to act as a guard/stewards at a Charity Ball hosted by the Largo Group of Ossett.

Of course, there's always the 'Bun-Fight' afterwards..!

'999 Weekend', Elsecar

On the weekend 26/27 April, the cadets were fortunate enough to take part in a full weekend of activities alongside the Emergency Services, taking the centre stage as one of the main acts.
Rotating their roles throughout the two days were Petty Officer Cadet Jamie Clark, A/C Gemma Wright, O/C Alex Pressland, Cadet Jack Artliff, Cadet Maria Whitaker.
Their task was to build a step ladder over an obstacle, run out lengths of fire hose, pitch a ladder against a building and then direct a charged hose to deliver water whilst wearing a breathing apparatus. The jet was supplied using a modern Volvo Fire Appliance operated by the cadets in turn. Jamie (above) makes ready to go..!

Ship Training Week

RFA Fort Victoria provided a fantastic venue for a weeks training from Feb 10th '08. The group are pictured here on the ships Flight Deck and was made up of 11 Blue Jackets, 7 Marines and 6 cadets of the Air Training Corps.

HMS Victory is the backdrop here and enabled cadets to see what life was like in the wooden navy.

HMS Alliance provided the venue for an introduction to submarine life...

Bank Holiday W/E, HMS Plymouth

A few clips from the weekend we spent aboard HMS Plymouth, a frigate now decommissioned and at the time docked in Mersyside. Throughout the w/e cadets gained qualifications in a variety of specialisations including First Aid, Seamanship and Communications. Leading Cadet Claire Lindley experiences the difficulties encounted as a fire-fighter in a ships engine room.

And the group at the end of the course. Because of the success of this most enjoyable and long weekend, it was proposed that we returned to this venue again but it in the event the Trust went into liquidation and is sadly closed.

60's & 70's Evening

Last year we held a Pudsey Bear CIN party organised by PO Cadet Laura Frudd as part of her Training & Development for her role as a senior cadet. Seen here are the two Commanding Officers from Barnsley Air Cadets and Sea Cadets respectively.

The CO and the organiser, Laura (neither made any attempt at a costume!!)

Royal British Legion Standard Bearers Course

All three cadet forces in Barnsley became affiliated to the RBL earlier this year and as such qualified to take part in the Standard Bearers Course. This will enable the cadets to head a Remembrance Parade carrying a Standard or even a Colour on civic parades. The first course in Barnsley was held within our unit hosting the Air and Army cadets. Here you can see the cadets gaining their certificates.

Boating Venue

We usually carry out our boating at a place called Horbury where most types of water craft are taught, qualified in and most importantly, have fun with. Of course during a weekend course we do have breaks from the water with other activities. Here some of the cadets enjoy a stroll along the canal path learning about canal locks and how they work whilst helping out with the operation of locks.

Right is just one of the activities we do on the water. Claire is seen taking a couple of newcomers out on the lake in a Wayfarer. The largest dinghy available to us.

Powerboat handling is another skill cadets can qualify with. Here Fiona is carrying out fast planing manoeuvres in a Dory outboard rescue. On completion of this course Fiona gained her Royal Yachting Association Power Level 2 qualification with planing endorsement. This equates to a driving licence for a powerboat.

A 'man-overboard' drill is attempted by Fiona and Jenny

How to tow a boat in distress...

And finally, to show that there is some serious fun as well!

National Courses

Staff also attend national courses to either learn new skills, or to provide instructor cover to help out with staffing etc. On the left is the CO Andy Devonport with CPO Andy Hunt at the Scottish boat station, Port Edgar used by HMS Caledonia. On this occasion the CO provided assistance as a second instructor.

On this course at Portsmouth, our sailing instructor Mick Sides took a group of cadets for their RYA Sailing Modules in and around the harbour of Portsmouth. Seen here is the bow of HMS Bristol, a destroyer used by the cadets for a variety of courses.

RFA Fort Victoria

Royal Fleet Auxilliary Ship, Fort Victoria (center) is Barnsleys affiliated ship. When we were kindly invited aboard by the captain, we got to spend 10 days at sea where 2 staff, 8 sea cadets and 2 air cadets had a fantastic time. It was a perfect opportunity for the cadets (including the Air Cadets) to gain their Off-shore Power Grade 2 qualification.
