Woking Cadets Help Cadet150 Launch

Cadets and staff from the unit attended a photo shoot at Pirbright recently.
The photos will be used to publicize Cadet150 events and activities
throughout the country during 2010. Along with other sea cadets from Surrey
and local army and air cadets, they had to climb up scramble netting and
then smile!

Cadet150 is celebrating the cadet movements century and a half of support to
young people with hundreds of events all over the country throughout 2010,
all designed to promote the movement and encourage people of all ages to get
involved. The year of celebration is entitled Cadet150 and Her Majesty The
Queen is Patron.

With origins dating back to 1860, the cadet movement is one of the oldest
and most successful voluntary youth organisations in the world. A force to
be reckoned with, today it numbers 131,000 young people led by 25,000 adult
volunteers in well over 3,000 sites across the country.

Cadet150 honours the role the Cadet Forces play in assisting young people
towards responsible adulthood through learning new skills and developing
self-confidence, and recognises the contribution the young people themselves
make to their local communities.

Appeal to Replace ROYALIST

The Sea Cadets launched a national fundraising campaign for a new twin masted brig to help inspire the next generation of sailors today. The campaign to raise £7.5million to replace the existing training ship TS ROYALIST was officially announced at Trinity House during a reception, by TV presenter and historian, Dan Snow.

Dan Snow, himself an ex Sea Cadet, spoke about his experiences as a Sea Cadet and his recent trip on ROYALIST for the filming of ‘Empire of the Seas’ for BBC2. He said;

“You join the Sea Cadets and you push your own limits. You discover things about yourself. It opens up options”

Also speaking was Josh Syrett, 17, and a Sea Cadet since 2005, he said;
“Sailing on Royalist is an incredible experience open to all Sea Cadets, it’s what we are all about and teaches you team work, perseverance and determination, it is an exhilarating experience and an amazing challenge. A new training ship will mean even more young people can benefit from this incredible experience”

TS ROYALIST is 38 years old and the need to replace her is imperative if the charity is to continue to offer young people, aged between 13 and 18 adventure training in a structured environment at sea. The ship embodies the charities commitment and passion to champion Britain’s maritime future by inspiring young people. Built in 1971, ROYALIST has given 30000 young people the unique chance to experience life at sea.

The Sea Cadets is one of Britain’s largest maritime youth charities open to young people aged between 10 and 18. Supporting 14,000 young people, across 400 UK Units, it offers a range of nautical adventure activities all with a naval theme and aims to challenge young people to help them grow in confidence. The Sea Cadets is part of The Marine society & Sea Cadets, Britain’s oldest maritime youth charity.

WOKING NEW UNIT - NEWS

It was announced at the AGM of the unit management committee that Woking Borough Council has agreed all the remaining details for the creation of our new unit in Goldsworth Park. The Chairman, Barry Pope J.P. and the Unit President Commodore James Fanshawe CBE RN had received an E mail from the council confirming that the requested design changes, the managing structure and the business plan had all been accepted by councillors. WBC were now engaging their legal department to create a head of terms lease and preparing tenders for the build.

The Chairman stated that this was an historic landmark in the history of Woking Sea and Marine cadets. We now have the opportunity to create one of the best units in the country
in a building that will also give opportunities for other local groups to use. As this unit will hopefully become a flagship for the Sea Cadets Corps and the Borough we are planning a royal opening ceremony in 2011. But first we need to have all the necessary parts in place to take on the responsibility of having such an opportunity. Our first task is to seek out new members for the Management committee and for the not for profit community company.
'There has never been a better or more exciting time to be involved with the unit' said the chairman. A vote of thanks was given to Cmdr James Fanshawe for all his efforts in pulling together the business plan and to our previous unit commanding officer John Bray who started this process off.
