Boats back where they belong!

For weeks, parents, staff and cadets have been hard at work in our boatshed ensuring the boats are up to tip top condition ready to put on the water. Eventually the time has come and on Sunday 8th July we loaded up the trailers and set off down to Southampton.

We had help from two fantastic parents and managed to put the boats onto the water and to make it even better, the sun was shining all day!

Right: The hard working cadets who helped put the boats on the water, Lisa, Grant and Chris. Not pictured but also helped was Cadet Sam Phillips.

Thanks also to Mr Newton and Mr Phillips who have been working hard on the boats on parade nights and who came down to assist in the boat launching.

Paddling our way to victory!

4 of Winchester's finest Sea Cadet left for the District Kayaking Competition on Sunday 17th June ready for a day's hard paddling up the River Avon in Salisbury.

We managed to enter a Junior Boys, Senior Boys and Senior Girls team for the marathon (1 mile for Juniors and 2 for Seniors) and the sprint (400m for Juniors and 800m for Seniors).

We were able to get someone from each team through to the finals which shows what amazing paddlers we have at Winchester.

The cadets had a thoroughly enjoyable day and the weather man even held back the rain for us.

By the end of the day we had walked away with 2 cadets through to the Area Competition and 4 certificates for 1st and 2nd places in the Marathons and Sprints.

Overall standing meant we came second in the Junior Boys and Senior Girls. We missed out on the Junior Boys trophy by 3 points (not bad considering the winning team had 4 cadets and we only had 1). We also unfortunately missed out on Senior Girls by 4 points (again the winning team had 2 cadets and we only had 1).

A fantastic day and a huge congratulations to all the cadets involved who worked very hard and came away with the certificates, places and huge smiles to prove it.

What a day!

On Bank Holiday Monday (28th May), the cadets braved the wind and the rain to spend the day in Portsmouth visiting war ships and taking part in nautical activities.

Some parents even joined in the fun!

We took an extended harbour tour which included the Falklands veterans HMS Fearless and HMS Intrepid(the weather thoroughly wrecking the girls' hair!) and watched the Southern Area PT display. We also had a peek around serving naval warships HMS Kent (a type 23 frigate) and HMS Mersey (a fishery protection vessel); played with some of the equipment and met the crew.

To finish the day, we watched Band of HM Royal Marines and even got exclusive photos!

A thoroughly fun day for cadets and parents.

Music to our ears!

On the weekend of the 11-13th May, cadets from Reading, Winchester, Kettering and Romsey came together for a novice band training weekend.

The weekend was aimed at improving basic musical techniques for new band members, and for cadets and staff to meet other bandies! The weekend was a great success, with all bands learning new tunes, routines and impressing all around the camp! Well done everyone!

If you are interested in joining the cadet band, then you must be a cadet in the unit. No musical knowledge is required. Most band members have never picked up an instrument before joining. Just come alongto the unit on a Sunday 1830-2030! We are always looking for new members, especially staff!

T.S Royalist

T.S.Royalist during the Trafalgar 200 International Fleet Review

We are very lucky to have been able to get 3 cadets onto T.S. Royalist this year.

T.S. Royalist is a 29 metre (97 foot) long square-rigged tall ship which was launched in 1971. The ship provides opportunities for Sea Cadets from all over the country to take part in voyages abroad in countries such as the Channel Islands and to France, Belgium and in some cases, the Netherlands and Germany. Also, during the Tall Ships race period, Royalist can visit other countries of Europe.

The cadets found it a really worthwile experience and are saving up for their next trip! The cadets both gained fantastic qualifications onboard and came back on a definate high; encouraging other cadets in the unit to book on the tall ship!

It is a fantastic opportunity for cadets in the corps and something the cadets will not forget in a hurry.

Presentation Evening

On 29th March we had out Unit Annual Presentation Evening and I am pleased to say it was a success. The evening provides a great opportunity for parents to see how well their children have done over the year and for the cadets to be recognised for all t heir hard work.

We had a fantastic performance from our new Unit Band and Lt (SCC) Nicklin RNR kindly agreed to attend the evening and present the awards.

We had a brilliant turn out from parents and other visitors which is always welcome.

On the evening we also unvailed our new ships bell which came from HMS Itchen and was kindly donated by Mr Jordan from our UMC who had managed to get hold of it for us.

Fire Station Visit

Our Juniors went on a fantastic trip to Winchester Fire Station on 15th March 2007.

The cadets were able to meet current firefighters at the station and given the opportunity to try out the hose, wear the equipment and play in the fire engine. They were given a tour and learnt a lot about this amazing emergency service.

A thoroughly great evening all round.

Band Course 2-4th March 2007

Recently Winchester Sea Cadets started a band, being expertly taught by PO Williams and PPO Rice. The cadets are really enjoying themselves as well as picking up a new skill, learning an instrument.

On the 2nd-4th March, 7 cadets attended a Southern Area Beginners Band Course. We had 3 cadets learning the Bellyre, 1 learning the bass drum, 1 learning the tenor drum, 1 learning the snare drum and one cadet was learning to be the Drum Major.

The cadets learnt an awful lot over the weekend and came back very tired after putting in their full effort and achieving new tunes.

Although the weekend wasn't designed for the cadets to achieve an award, two of our cadets achieved awards for outstanding effort and always trying their hardest.

They all did exceptionally well, well done.

Band

Winchester Unit have just started setting up their Unit band and the cadets are very enthusiastic when creatign music. The band is being run by PO Williams and PO Rice who are both very keen 'bandies'.

The cadets, although many are novices are happy to learn the new instruments including the Bellyre, drums and bugle.

RNP 2006

We had our RNP on Monday 30th October and received a Commondores Certificate.

We were all really happy with the award due to all the upheavall we have had in the past year.

The RNP was attened by the Area Officer Commander Gary Bushall RN as well as lots of family and friends.

Remeberance Parade 2006

In November 2006 3 cadets attended a Rememberance Parade at Martyr Worthy church. The service was conducted by our padre Johnathon Cruickshank and PO Williams also showed her bugle skills when sounding the last post.

The cadets formed a guard for the service and the congregation (many of whom were the British Legion)were thoroughly impressed with the cadets.

250th Anniversary of MSSC

July 2006 marked the 250th anniversary of The Marine Society & Sea Cadets.

There were over 250 cadets onboard HMS Albian (which was supposed to be HMS Ocean. We had one cadet from the unit who was lucky enough to be selected to join the ship. LC Froment is a 1st class cook steward and was selected as part of the stewarding team onboard.

Other cadets from other units were selected for the band, guard and PT display team.

HMS Albion left Plymouth on Tuesday 11 July and arrived in London on Wednesday 12 July, The cadets took part in all the daily activities and lived life as the permanent crew did.

There was also a Royal visit from the Queen on Friday 14 July, and inspected the Sea Cadets. Alongside the cadets were 500 VIP guests in the ships hanger.

LC Lisa Froment: "It was an amazing experience and I am really pleased to have been allowed to participate in such a brilliant event. The stewarding was a real challenge as there was so many guests and I have definitly learnt a lot from it. I really enjoyed it and made loads of new friends from all over the country."

Southern Area paddlers celebrate Awards for All success
25/05/2006

Southern Area’s Sea Cadet Paddling Team have been lucky to secure a funding awarded for £4,411 from the Awards for All Lottery Fund towards the purchase of Open Canoes (Canadian Canoes), paddles and associated equipment.

Traditionally the Sea Cadets offer kayak skills; these new open canoes will allow young people from all over the Southern Region of the Sea Cadets to have the opportunity to try out a different form of paddlesport.

Kayaking does not always appeal to everyone, and open canoes will allow our team to offer different paddlesport activities to a wider range of participants. With these new boats we plan to run personal skill courses as well as adventurous canoe camping courses.

The new craft will allow young people to gain personal boat handling skills from the basic level through to river running and canoe expeditions, as well as offering the chance for the young people to get away from ‘life’ and achieve personal goals using their own skills and determination”.

LC Froment is a keen paddler and has completed both her 2* Canoeing and 2* Kayaking.
