A New Chaplin

After being the unoffical Unit Padre for the last few Years, and having now successfuly completed the National SCC Chaplins Course at HMS EXCELLENT Mr Dave Ware-Jarrett has been confirmed by the National SCC Chaplin as Chaplin (SCC) Dave Ware-Jarrett Royal Naval Reserve.

Coming to us from the Church of St James' just up the road from the unit, Dave has been an invaluable addition to the unit, not only in the Chaplin Role but also in the pastrol care of our cadets and staff.

Dave is only the third SCC Chaplin who has completed the course and is unordaned by the church.

A special presentation ceremony took place at the unit after the Remembrance Day Parade in Tunbridge Wells as was attended by rev Jim Steward from St James' Church as well as the Ships Company and many parents and supporters of the unit.

Remembrance Sunday

Sunday 8th November 2009 saw the unit take an active part in the Borough's Remembrance Commemerative Celebrations to remember those members of the Armed Forces who have lost their lives over the years defending our country.

Following a successful saturday selling poppies for the British legion in Tunbridge Wells Town, the buglers of TS Brilliant met at Southborough on an early crisp Sunday Morning to play last Post at that service.

Whilst they were there the rest of the Unit was getting ready for the Main Parade at the the War Memorial in the Town Centre.

Under escort from Kent Highways, the Whole Ships Company paraded with the Band Leading and the Unit Standard carried by AC Roberts to the War Memorial to take our position in the parade.

Our Unit Buglers played last post note perfect and then led the parade on the March Past.

The wreath was laid on behalf of the Unit by S/LT James Groves at the foot of the War Memorial

Once this parade was complete the Ships Company marched back to the unit, whilst TI Dickinson proceeded to The Crematorium and the Remembrance Memorials there to play another Last Post for the Services taking place there.

Once back at the unit refreshments were provided to both cadets and supporters who had followed the parade back, and for the first time in many years after this event was ram packed.

Well done to all of those who paraded looking very smart and seaman like.

Sea Cadet Corps National Trafalgar Celebrations

The evening of Thursday 22nd October saw some members of the unit travel to HM Naval Base Portsmouth to join RFA Mounts Bay to train for this years parade in Trafalgar Square with some other 300 Sea CAdets from across the country.

S/LT Grove was there as OiC of the pre parade Drill Display Team. PO's Price, Lindfield and Woodhams attended as training staff for the Massed Band of The Sea Cadet Corps and they were joined by MC2's Evans and Read, AC Woodhams and Cdt Duplusis as members of the Band - and MC2 Read was appointed as Lead Drum Major for the event.

Training was conducted on Friday and Saturday at HMS Excellent on Whale Island, with Saturday being a full rehersal in front of the Captain of the Sea Cadet Corps.

Sundays weather was perfect, with not a drop of rain unilke the previous year. All the cadets marched from Horse Guards to Trafalgar Square where there were Inspected by a number of VIPs including the Commander in Chief Fleet for the Royal Navy before they marched back up the Mall, past Buckingham Palace to Wellington Barracks where the Army provided at hot lunch before we departed.

The Next Trafalgar Weekend - 18th October 2009

With an ever increasing diary the unit spent this weekend undertaking their second batch of Trafalgar celebrations.

S/LT Groves travelled to Fort Blockhouse in Gosport to parade in his Area Capacity and undertook the duties as a junior officer in Carrying the Southern Area Colour at the Portsmouth Sea Fearers Parade.

Whilst the unit band provided the musical support for Eastbourne Royal Naval Old Comrades Club's Parade in East Sussex where they were joined by a guard formed from Eastbourne.

District Trafalgar Day Parade - 11th October 2009

Each year a different unit within the district hosts the annual District Trafalgar Day Parade, and this year was the turn of the newest unit in the District, Westerham to have their go.

This event also combined the presentation of their Unit Colour which since their formation some 5 years ago they have worked extremely hard.

The parade organised jointly between the unit and District Staff Officer(Ceremonial)commenced with the formation of the Divisions before the Band and Guard march on and formed ready for the inspection.

The VIP's for the event included Admiral Sir Micheal Boyce Royal Navy - Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports and Lord Astor of Heaver, who has been a great friend to the unit.

once the inspection was complete, the parade marched to the unit's church for a short service why the Corps of Drums from the Band, led by PO Price formed a traditional Drum Head Alter for the colour to lay throughout the service before its dedication.

The parade then marched past before retiring to Westerham unit for a buffet and address by the VIP

in all some 350 personnell, staff, cadets, marines and juniors paraded and supported what was a very historic day for not only the unit but the district as well

Unit Cocktail Party

Saturday 25th September 2009 saw the Wardroom of TS Brilliant host a cocktail party for friends, family and staff of the unit in order to raise funds for the trip to Wiesbaden in 2010. The evening started with the guests converging of the unit from 1930hrs to be greeted by Marine Cadet Sentries and then escorted by CPO Manuel onto the main deck for complimentary wine and soft drinks.

Guests were taken on tours of the unit to show off our splendid facilities available to the guests. The band, supported by Cadets and Staff from Whitstable Unit who will be travelling to Germany with us, then performed a Beat Retreat Ceremony for the gathered crowd and Ceremonial Sunset.

Once the formalities were concluded LT CDR Vanns - the trip OiC gave a talk about the trip and what is expected before an Auction took place supplemented by a raffle.

Our Local MP - Mr Gregg Clark paid a high sum of money in order to have the band play at an event of his choice.

The evening raised some £2,000 towards our target and a great evening was had by all.

District Advancement Weekend

The weekend of 4th-6th September saw West Kent hold their first District Advancement weekend on HMS Cavalier within Chatham Historic Dockyard.

Able Cadets Heald, Roberts and Wood attending the weekend hoping to be promoted to Leading Cadet by the end of it, together with S/LT Groves attending in his role of District Staff Officer (Ceremonial) in order to assess the dress and drill elements.

The weekend saw the candidates assessed on their Leadership poential, Instructional Technique whilst teaching a lesson, Dress, Drill, Bearing, knowledge of the SCC and Fire Prevention, after spending all day on the Saturday getting prepared by the District Staff

Able Cadets Heald and Wood obtained a partial pass needing to be reassessed on their Instructional Methods elements within the next 8 weeks and unfortunately AC Roberts didnt quite manage to pass however will of gained invaluable experience for his next attempt.

Well done to not only the cadets from the unit, but all of those from across the district who attended what ever result you achieved

Mayor of Tonbridge's River Cruise - 22nd August 2009

On Saturday 22nd August 2009, Cadets and Staff from Tunbridge Wells Unit, together with POC C Bennett from Dartford Unit assisted with the Mayor of Tonbridge's River Cruise for this year.

Starting at Yalding the convoy of 8 motor vessells made their way through the locks of the River Medway to Tonbridge, stopping halfway for lucnch.

The Cruise started their Journey at 0900 after POC Bennett pipped the side as the Mayoess of Tonbridge enbarked on her vessel, whilst those from Tunbridge Wells Unit took their places on the boat owned by our Admin officer, Avis and Tony Crowhurst.

Along the route the cadets had the opportunity to opperate the locks on the way to our final destination.

Luckily the weather held of, and sunburn was on general issue for all of those taking part, however the day was thoroughly enjoyed by all, both Sea Cadets and general public.

Tunbridge Wells Autorama Festival - 9th August 2009

The unit helped to support the Tunbridge Wells Autorama Festival celebrate its 21st Anniversary by providing a Continuity Drill Display at three points throughout the day.

The event which saw vintage, classic and modern car clubs show off their numerous vehicles saw in excess of 1000 people pass through the gates and see the cadets perform. MC2 Evans opened the show with a bugle fanfare before the drill displays commenced.

Also at the event was a number of other staff and cadets on hand to recruit more numbers for the unit and MC2 Montandon fully kitted out and ready for field ops.

Dinning Out and Old Friend

Friday 24th July 2009 saw Southern Area "Dine Out" LT (SCC) GP "Nick" Nicklin RNR.

Nick first came to the Sea Cadets in the mid 1980's when as a serving RN Chief Petty Officer got drafted to SASCC as Area Chief. In the 1990's this turned into Area Warrant Officer and later Area Logistics Officer.

Nick has been a great friend to the unit, offering an ear to bounce ideas off of, and as many units have found, a person able to source kit for the cadets from almost anywhere!!!

S/LT (SCC) James Groves RNR, LT (SCC) Derek Ireland RNR, LT CDR (SCC) Jon Vanns RNR and ex CPO (SCC) John Baker represented TS BRILLIANT at this sad, but highly enjoyable event, giving us the opportunity to say goodbye to an old friend, which took place at the Senior Rates Mess in HMS COLLINGWOOD.

Nick, form all at TS BRILLIANT many thanks for all of your help over the years and we hope Lyn and yourself have a very happy retirement!

Cadet Advancement

Congratulation to Ordinary Cadet Connor Woodhams who on Tuesday 21st July 2009 took his examination for promotion to Able Cadet and successfully passed.

Wednesday 22nd July saw Cadets Lauren Carrol and Stephen Tansley take their Ordinary Cadet Advancement test, and agin they past.

Marine Cadet Section Official!!!!!

Our Marine Cadet Section have now been officially signed off and is recognised by Headquarters.

Following an inspection by Zulu Company's Commander, Major (SCC) Graham Guppy Royal Marines Reserve where he assessed our Marine Staff, Cadets, Training to date and how we have integrated them into the unit.

This historical event in the history of the unit is thanks to the hard work of Sgt (SCC) George Martin and his team, not least the cadets themselves. Since the Marines came into the Unit in June 2008 they have proved a huge asset and take part in everything with the bluejackets and their numbers have grown to their current standing of 12.

The evening of Thursday 16th July 2009 saw a number of the Ship's Company being successful in gaining their Pulling Competent Crew Boatwork Qualifications, well done to all of the Juniors who passed in addition to Cdt's Lauren Carrol and Georgia Raynor.

Royal Appearance

Thursday 16th July 2009 saw the band of Tunbridge Wells yet again mass with Whitstable, however this time in some prestigious surroundings.

In support of the London YOU initiative, supporting youth organisation in London, TRH Prince of Wales and Dutchess of Cornwall hosted a garden party for London Youth within the grounds of Buckingham Palace.

The Band was part of the Sea cadets involvement including PT Displays, seamanship and Boatwork.

Royal Marines Pride

With the unfortunate occasion of the closure of the Tunbridge Wells Branch of the Royal Marines Association came a silver lining for the branch.

On Friday 10th July 2009 the branch came to Tunbridge Wells Unit to present their Standard to the custody of the Marine cadet Detachment.

The evening started with Ceremonial Colours and the inspection of the Marine Cadet Guard by the branch chairman and was followed by a Continuity Drill Display performed to music with no words of command.

Following this the branch chairman gave the cadets and gathered guests a history of the branch before presenting the standard to MC2 Gareth Evans who smartly marched away with it.

SGT (SCC) George Martin, the Detachment Commander who organised the evening, thanked the branch for their support and said he was honoured to received their standard with pride.

Also present was "Stix" Barnett and ex cadet, even before John Baker, and life long supporter of our unit and ex Royal Marine Bandsman. He presented a framed photograph of Chief Petty Officer (SCC) John Baker at the 70th Anniverary Unit Parade in Tunbridge Wells where John was Colour Officer to S/LT (SCC) James Groves RNR.

The evening finished off with a buffett and the bar being opened to swop stories and comment on the performance of the Marines that evening.

St John's Ambulance

Four of the Units Buglers were requested at the annual Divisions Parade of the local St John's Ambulance.

The Buglers provided a musical fanfare for the Lord Lieutenant of Kent on his arrival and again to mark the beginning of the ceremony.

Canadian Memorial Service

Sunday 5th July saw the unit band play in Crowborough at the request of a former "Royal" for their British Legion parade at the Canadian Memorial.

The Band led the parade through the town to church in front of a number of senior Canadian Armed Forces Dignatories.

Another Weekend of Ceremonial...

S/LT Groves and the Guard await the arrival of 1SL Adm Sir Jonathan Band RN

After spending the last month with the West Kent District Drill Display Team S/LT James Groves had yet another busy weekend.

After a request fromt he First Sea Lords Flag Lieutenant, a guard from West and East Kent was mounted at the Old Naval College in Greenwich and led by S/LT (SCC) James Groves RNR for the surprise dining out of the First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir Jonathan Band Royal Navy.

This was a surprise for the First Sea Lord arranged jointly by Lady Band, the Royal Marines Band Service and his Flag Lieutenant, and saw S/LT Groves parade for the first time with his sword drawn after many years as a Senior Rate teaching the new officers how to use one!

The Guard were superbley turned out and impressed not only Admiral Band, who spoke to each and every cadet present, but also the various senior Naval Officers and the Royal Marines, who the performed with the previous week in Chatham.

From here the Display team went of to Gravesend Unit to perform at the Gravesend Big Day Out Festival on 4th July, yet again displaying their drill prowless with their Continuity Drill Display incorperating over 400 movements with no words of command.

Royal Marine Band Course

Congratulations to Able Cadet Aaron Heald who has been selected to attend the first Sea Cadet Band Course to be held at the Royal Marines School of Music in Portsmouth.

Aaron had training by serving Royal Marine Buglers, including the Bugle Major, Warrant Officer Bugler Lee Cullen Royal Marines, in the military side drum and Bugle.

After this course Aaron is now torn between a career with the Band Service or Commandos.

Eridge Summer Fayre

Sunday 28th June saw the Unit Band officially open the Summer Fayre on Eridge Green, an event sponsored by our Unit President.

National Armed Forces Day - Chatham Dockyard

The Street Lining Platoon March Through The Dockyard Under S/LT Groves' Command

Saturday 27th June 2009 saw the country's first Armed Forces Day, a celebration of our Armed Forces past and present, and the National Event was hosted in Chatham Historic Dockyard within West kent District and attending by TRH Duke and Dutchess of Gloucester and the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown together with a number of Chief of Staff across all Armed Services.

S/LT James Groves represented TS BRILLIANT in his role of DSO (Ceremonial) by providing the Ceremonial Support to the event in the form of Street Liners, a Continuity Drill Display and the evening Guard and Colour Party for Ceremonial Sunset and Beat Retreat with the Band of HM Royal Marines Portsmouth, with the salute being taken by CinCFleet.

Other events supporting the Sea Cadet Village included Field Gun Runs, PT Displays, Band, and the Window Ladder Display from Tameside Sea cadets.

Whilst James was here the remainder of the Unit Staff were present at the National Drill Instructors Summer Ball held at Leeford Place Hotel in Battle, East Sussex, and PO (SCC) Antony Price co-ordinated the Corps of Drums for Mess Beatings prior to dinner.

Armed Forces Day & Kent County Cricket Club

Monday 22nd June 2009 saw the start of Armed Forces Week, a new initiative leading up to Armed Forces Day on Saturday 27th June 2009.

Towns and villages around the country marked this with the hoisting of a special Armed Forces Day Flag, and Tunbridge Wells was no different, the local Mayor, Cllr Leonard Price invited LT CDR (SCC) Jon Vanns RNR and Mr Derek Ireland to the flag hoisting ceremony at the Town Hall, and LT CDR Vanns even dusted off his bugle to sound the General Salute as the Flag was raised.

Later that evening S/LT Groves, Mr Ireland and Mr Harrop went to the Nevil Cricket Ground in Tunbridge Wells as the Guests of the mayor to watch the 20 Twenty Cricket match between Kent and Hampshire.

A thoroughly exciting game of cricket saw kent defeat Hampshire and provided us a chance to speak to our colleagues from the Air Training Corps and share ideas and stories over a buffett supper.

Band Performances

Sunday 14th June 2009 saw the Unit Band, together with Whitstable Mass for a couple of high profile parades.

First off, after a quick get together and practice of tunes the bands made their way over to Tonbridge to take part in Tonbridge Carnival and the South East Counties Parade Band Competition against a number of other bands, including the Royal British Legion Youth Band Romford. Unfortunately they did not win the competition, however, the cadets consoled themselves with candy floss, fizzy drinks and sweets at the fayre before they headed off to their next gig....

...Coming back they stopped by the Tunbridge Wells Constitutional Club to perform a slot at their annual fete. The Constitutional Club are big supporters of our unit allowing us to keep ou unit mini bus in their secure car park throughout the year.

As always the band was greatly received before they made their way round the corner back to the unit to unload the mini busses, change into civvies before PO's Dave Woodhams and Antony Price lit the BBQ to provide tea to all the cadets.

Royal Marines Beat Retreat

EX TS BRILLIANT Cadet, Bugler Perry Lawrence Royal Marines

Every three years the Massed Bands of Her Majesty's Royal Marines Beat Retreat on Horseguards Parade in Whitehall, London to celebrate the birthday of their Major general HRH Prince Phillip the Duke of Edingburgh.

Our Unit President, Commodore Barry bryant Royal Navy, managed to secure 15 free tickets for our cadets and staff to attend on the Tuesday night, unfortunately not the night for HRH.

The cadets got to see a fantastic performed by the Massed Bands, including an ex TS BRILLIANT Cadet, Bugler Perry Lawrence of Portsmouth Band.

Thank you to Commodore Bryant for obtaining the tickets and giving them a fantastic night out!

A Busy Weekend - 15-17th May 2009

This weekend saw the unit extremely busy not only in the local Towns but winthing Southern Area as well.

Friday 15th Saw PO (SCC) Will Vanns and TI Pierce take 6 Cadets away to Middle Hill training centre for Expedition leader Training.

Throughout the weekend they all slept in Tents, cooked there own food and hiked a few mile improving map reading skills and route planning.

All who attended achieved their Basic Campcraft Proficiency which they can now build on through the EL Scheme.

Sunday 17th May saw the Unit's Combined Fete with Age Concern Southborough and the Southborough Branch on the RNLI.

A good day was had with Sgt (SCC) George Martin and CPO (SCC) "Dicky" Manuel running the obstacle Course, the Band providing a number of displays and the remainng Marines got their Facepaint and webbing out to "Patrol" for potential recruits.

However to make the day more of a challenge S/LT (SCC) James Groves RNR assisted London Area Parade Staff running a SA80 training morning in Bromley before arriving at the Unit Fete.

The day raised about £500 for the unit and also got a few new recruits.

Well done to all involved in the various activities this weekend!

Cockleshell Heroes...???....

The Weekend of 7th - 9th May 2009 saw our Marine Cadet Detachment and staff take part in Zulu Company's Spring Survival Camp, named Cockleshell Heroes.

The weekend gave our Cadets their first taste of survival training, including Patrolling as a troop, field condition living, cooking and even skinning a rabbit to prepare for cooking!!

On the Sunday saw the assessments of what they had learnt and our lads won the competition against all other Detachments from Zulu Company, not bad for a trail detachment.

Royal Navy Presentation Team

Sea Cadets and Marine Cadets and Staff from the Unit attended the RN presentation Team Networking event at Tonbridge School on Wednesday 6th May 2009.

The RN presentation Team asked our assistance with the event in the form of ushering guests and stewarding, as well as PO (SCC) Will Vanns and MC2 Gareth Events providing a fantastic Bugle Fanfare to announce to all the guest the presentationw as about to start.

The event allowed us to show to the local business what we as an organisation can offer young adults in the community, as well as the businesses themselves, and build even stronger links with the Royal Navy.

Lakeside Sea Cadet Fest

The May Day Bank Holiday of 2-3 May saw the Sea Cadet Corps take over Lakeside Shopping Centre in Essex for Sea CadetFest 2009.

Following the success of the same event in 2009 the Band of Tunbridge Wells joined with our friends from Whitstable to provide musical entertainment to the crowds, both inside and outside the shopping centre throughout the weekend, and certainly proved to be the Star Performers of the event!

Royal Marines Museum Visit

On Sunday 29th April 2009, the Detachment Commander, SGT (SCC) George Martin, assisted by TI Pierce, PO (SCC) Will Vanns and Mr David Hanmore took the Marine Cadet Detachment and some select Sea Cadets to the Royal Marine Museum in Portsmouth.

The Marine Cadets take great pride in the history of the Corps, and where better to learn than here, the site on RM Barracks Eastney.

A great day was had by all, and im sure the knowledge gained will be fruitful in the future

MAST

MAST is the twice yearly Southern Area Staff Training weekend taking place at Browndown Army Camp in Gosport and is designed to cover a variety of subjects across the Marine Cadet and Blue Jacket sylabus, as well as a chance to network with colleagues across the area.

4 of our staff attended on various courses, S/LT Groves was Instructing on the various Drill & Ceremonial Courses, PO Vanns underwent Navigation and Chatwork Training, SGT Martin undertook his Qualification to Conduct Weapon Handling Tests (QcWHT)and successfully passed whilst TI Pierce completed the Adult Induction Course for all new instructors.

Sponsored Swim

Friday 17th April 2009 saw the unit's annual sponsored swim take place at Holewood House Schhol swimming pool.

A number of Cadets, Staff, UMC Members, Supporters and Friends turned up to swim numerous lengths of the pool in the 2 hour slot.

All money raised will be used by the unit for training materials and equipment for cadet use

Marine Engineering......

After undergoing 8 weeks of training with PO (SCC) Will Vanns within the unit environment Able Cadets Gareth Wood, Aaron Heald and Andrew Roberts, together with Ordinary Cadet Connor Woodhams travelled to Dartford Unit to be examined in their 3rd Class Marine Engineering Specialisation by CPO (SCC) Kevin Louth.

All of them successfully passed not only the practical side, but also the written paper as well.

After keeping it quiet from other staff over the weekend of 27th - 30th March CPO (SCC) James Groves travelled to SCTC Inskip in Preston to undertake his National Officer Selection Board.

After a weekend of Command Tasks, last minute notice presentations, and communication exercises ending with a gruelling interview with a number of senior RN and SCC Officers CPO (SCC) Groves is now promoted to Sub Lieutenant (SCC) James Groves Royal Naval Reserve.

Area Drill & Piping 2009

Following their successful District display in February the Unit Armed Guard, this time trained by CPO (SCC) Richard Manuel travelled to HMS EXCELLENT for the Area Drill & Piping Competition.

Despite a very strong performance, after a number of clerical errors we ended up coming in third place, however, did win the Best Dress Armed Guard Competition.

Wee done to all taking part and good luck to those representing Southern Area at the National Competition.

Royal Naval Parade 2009

Every 2 years every Sea Cadet Unit gets formally inspected by their Area Officer, and on 10th March 2009 the Area Officer for Southern, Commander Andy Giles Royal Navy came to Tunbridge Wells to conduct our RNP, the first with our newly formed Marine Cadet Detachment!.

A number of parents and invited guests, including the Worshipful Mayors of Tunbridge Wells and Southborough, OiC Tunbridge Wells ATC and OiC Skinners School CCF and Local RNA representatives were present to watch the performance of our cadets.

The night started with the traditional Colours Ceremony with Able Cadet Heald taking on the role of Parade Commander and Able Cadet Claxton the Guard Commander. The Area Officer then inspected the Ships Company before being taken on a tour of the Unit.

After a quick cup of tea it was on with the displays, the first being headed up by Able Cadet Jade Lindfield and took the form of "Cadet Mastermind" with two teams of cadets pitting their wits against a Staff Team headed by the Area Officer.

This was followed by a display of ceremonial involving the Unit Band and a Marine Cadet Continuity Drill Display to some popular chart music.

Following Evening Colours badges were presented by the Area Officer followed by presentations of BTEC awards in Music.

West Kent District Drill & Piping Competition 2009

The event was held on Sunday 22nd February 2009 on the main parade ground of RSME Brompton and was run by the District Staff Officer Ceremonial, CPO (SCC) J Groves, our unit First Lieutenant, and was attended by some 200 cadets and staff from across West Kent and Judges coming from London Area.

After many weeks of practice, all of the hard work piping, drilling and preparing uniforms and rifles came through. We entered an Armed Drill Squad and 3 Pipipers into the respective competitions.

Able Cadet Aaron Heald Won the Best Guard Commander Trophy and the Guard won the Best Armed Guard Competition and will go forward to HMS EXCELLENT in March for the Area Competition. Whilst the pipers did not get in the medal places, they performed extremely well considering they were fresh from New Entries.

Southern Ara Conference 2009

Saturday 31st January saw a number of the Unit Command Team, UMC and other key staff travel down to HMS COLLINGWOOD in Fareham for this years Area Conference. The Theme of the Conference was "Communication" and was hosted by the Area Officer, Commander Andy Giles Royal Navy, with the Captain of the Corps and other key MSSC employees having a slot.

The day proved a useful networking tool for all those attending, and even allowed CPO Groves to conduct some "Dell Boy" style trading with a fellow First Lieutenant !
