Area Regatta 30-May 2010
Thurrock have yet again proved they are a unit not to be matched when it comes to dinghy sailing within London Area. For the 3rd in year in succession they have be crowned Area Champions
Although the day was dry the wind picked up to gusts in excessive of 25mph and the boys held their own throughout
Of the 6 Trophies up for grabs Thurrock picked up 5 of them these included:
Area Bosun Class – POC Risk (helm) OC Moon (Crew) (last time won by Thurrock in 2000) Area Pico – LC Langridge Area Junior Topper – OC Goddard Rookie of the Year – OC Goddard (joint winner with Ruislip) Area ‘Well Sharp Trophy’ Overall winner Trophy – Thurrock
LC Bush(helm), OC Connelly(crew) finished in an excellent 3rd after some outstanding sailing be shown, however the conditions got the best of the lightweight crew in the end, the pair were up there with winners for the ¾ of the regattas. Only missing out on 2nd by count back
POC Risk, OC Moon had the regatta of their careers to date, and stomped to 1st after winning their 3 races,
LC Langridge showed a developed maturity and increased skill standard throughout.
OC Goddard is the cadet to watch for the future. After a second in the first race he stormed around the course to finish with 3 wins (the 1st race used as discard). When the final race was abandoned, OC Goddard was the only Topper afloat in the high winds managing to keeping boat flat and sailing with good pace and no reef.

Captain Fry visit to IVESTON
Captain Fry visited IVESTON recently purely as a personal visit to see the ship.
Captain Fry, is a serving Marine Engineer Officer in the Royal Navy, his most recent billet being as MEO of HMS INVINCBLE . During his time in the Royal Navy, he is amongst only a handful of officers who did not at some time in their training sail onboard one of the “small ships” – Minor War Vessels to give them their correct title! His view after his visit was that he was very glad that he hadn’t! The low headroom throughout the ship takes a bit of getting used to!
Lieutenant George Wilson, the Unit’s Executive Officer and IVESTON’S MEO, assisted by CPO Dickson, DMEO of IVESTON along with PO Burns and CPO Osborne gave the Captain a tour of all the spaces onboard, from the paint locker to the Sonar Space forward to the Mine Sweeping Store and Steering Flat aft.
The visit started with a machinery failure – a total electrical failure – which was not planned! This brought back memories of his time at sea and was relieved as CPO Dickson quickly excused himself and hurried off to sort things out. The speed with which CPO Dickson moved was also impressive, if not frightening!
The photographs show Captain Fry during his tour of the ship, on the forecastle where Lieutenant Wilson took some time to point out the problems we have with wood rot and how these areas are repaired, on the Bridge, probably the first time a full Captain has sat in the Captain’s chair – Commanding Officers of IVESTON and others of her Class normally held the rank of no more than Lieutenant Commander, in the Engine Room and in the Machinery Control Room.
Captain Fry thoroughly enjoyed himself during his visit and volunteered to comeback sometime to help out with maintaining the ship, an offer gratefully received!!
It is also planned that Captain Fry visits the ship again in early 2009 when a Marne Engineering Course is being held in the ship.

Wednesday 04th June
Rear Admiral Phillip Jones, Flag Officer Scotland, Northern England & Northern Ireland (FOSNNI) paid a visit to TS IVESTON he was accompanied by Commodore McDonald (HMS President), Captain Fry (Captain of the Sea Cadets), Commander Haines (London Area Officer)and Lieutenant Hough (Admirals Flag Lieutenant). They were meet by Ships Staff LT/CDR (SCC) R James (Thurrock), CPO (SCC) M Dickson (Orpington), CPO (SCC) I Osborne (Chelmsford), Petty Officer (SCC) J Burns and 4 Thurrock Cadets who are members of the maintenance team on board IVESTON, AC Atkinson, AC Smith, AC Risk, and OC Bush. Also in attendance were Richard Exley (Port of Tilbury Harbour Master), and Mike Gibson (Managing Director of Tilbury Container Services).
AC Atkinson was in charge of the Admirals flag and as soon as he stepped onboard it was hoisted smartly and this did impress the Admiral.
The Admiral toured the ship from the main engine room to the bridge not missing out anything and asking lots of questions.
The Admiral who had planned to stay only 45 mins was onboard for well over an hour.
On the 10th July the Captain of the Sea Cadets will revisit IVESTON and informed the staff that he bring his boiler suit with him.
