Thurrock Sea Cadets - TS BOXER

Thurrock Sea Cadets were formed in 1942 and were named TS ST. CLEMENTS they paraded in the Nissan huts inside Tilbury docks.

In 1982 they moved into the grounds of the park school in Bridge road and were renamed TS BOXER, Thurrock Sea Cadets were then affiliated to the brand new Type 22 Frigate HMS BOXER (F92). The ship was decommissioned in September 1999. The last Commanding Officer of HMS BOXER personally asked if they would continue to carry the name of the ship.

In 2007 Thurrock Sea Cadets moved to their current home which is inside the TA Centre off Hogg Lane in Grays. With over 35 cadets the unit enjoys taking part in various activities from walking, sailing, powerboating, climbing and Marine Engineering.

The unit has mved from the TA Centre in December 2009 and will parade at the St John Ambulance Grays Headquarters from the 12th January 2010

Thurrock Sea Cadets - TS IVESTON

In 1993 Thurrock Sea Cadets took possession of a unique facility an ex Royal Naval Ton Class Minesweeper named HMS IVESTON. The ship which is permanently moored inside Tilbury Docks offers both land based and water based training to cadets from Essex, London and Southern Area. IVESTON was brought by the unit from the MOD in 1999.

Royal Yachting Association Recognised Training Centre

Thurrock Sea Cadets is an RYA Recognised Training Centre which enables them to teach cadet’s various skills in powerboating and dinghy sailing, which lead to gaining RYA qualifications these, are recognised in over 85 countries around the world.

Training is usually held inside Tilbury Docks which is a non tidal commercial port, the operating area covers over 2miles of water. In the summer tidal training is conducted on the River Thames, often taking day sail trips from Tilbury to Purfleet.

Courses run at the RTC : RYA Youth Sailing Scheme Stage 1 -4, RYA National Sailing Sailing Level 1 & 2, Seamanship Skills, Day Sailing, Sailing with Spinnakers, Preformance Sailing, RYA Powerboat Level 1, Level 2 & Safety Boat - Theroy Courses RYA Diesel Course.

Boats Used at the RTC Bosun Dinghies, Laser Bahia, Laser 3000, Topper International, ASC, Rigiflex 360 (9.9hp Tiller Controlled) & Rigiflex 400 (40hp Remote Controlled)

One of the conditions of being an RYA Training Centre is that we are inspected annually to ensure the correctly qualified staff are in place and operations, equipment, and procedures are always safe for Sea Cadets.

Commanding Officer A/CPO (SCC) S M Stupples

Chief Petty Officer (SCC) Sue Stupples is a qualified teacher and member of the IFL - Institute for learning currently working for a large training provider as Learning and Development Manager.

She first joined the unit as a stores assistant and became a Civilian Instructor in October 1998. In September 1999 she became a uniformed member of staff.

Chief Petty Officer Stupples became Officer in Charge of Thurrock Unit in September 2002.

In July 2008 Chief Petty Officer Stupples was Appointed Commanding Officer of Thurrock Unit
