Winchester Shipping Festival

Cadets from Southampton Unit where present at the 62nd Southampton Master Mariners' annual Shipping Festival Service held at Winchester Cathedral.

The service which celebrates shipping has been held every year at Winchester Cathedral since 1931, only taking a break during the war years.

The Colour Party was made up from HMS King Alfred, the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, 17 Port Regiment of the Royal Logistic Corps based at Marchwood Military Port on Southampton Water, and Warsash Maritime Centre carried the White Ensign, the Red Ensign, the Blue Ensign of the RFA and the Army Ensign.

The standards of the Royal Naval Association, The Association of WRNS, the Royal Marines Association and the Merchant Navy Association will also be carried with our Cadets along with others from Romsey and Winchester Unit, carrying the Mission to Seafarers' flag and the flags of shipping companies and organisations associated with Southampton.

Some photographs are available here on the Units Picture Gallery or here (external link) under 'Winchester Festival of Flags'.

Area Drill and Piping

The annual Drill and Piping competition is one of the most fiercely fought competitions in the Sea Cadet calendar.

Southampton Unit was unique this year, for representing three out of four disciplines competed for, at the Southern Area competition this month.

With very young teams the Unit can be proud of its achievements. With particular mention going to the Colour Guard who achieved an amazing 3rd Place. Considering the rest of the guards had at least a foot extra height on most of the team, they looked and marched, with dedication and smartness beyond their years.

The Unarmed Squad gained a 4th Place, with Squad Commander L/C Watts gaining a Silver, 2nd Place for her efforts.

District Drill and Piping Competition 2007

Wow – The Unit swept the board at the Wessex District Drill and Piping competition early in March. Nearly all the of the Unit was involved in entering full teams in the Unarmed Drill, Team and Individual Piping and the Colour Guard Competitions.

The competition was fierce, but as a testament to the Cadets and Staff of our Unit, we took 1st place in all the disciplines we entered.

This means we will go on to represent Wessex District in three of the four disciplines at the Area Competition later in March at HMS Excellent on Whale Island, Portsmouth.

Mayor's Cadet for 2006

Southampton Sea Cadets were honoured with a visit from The Right Worshipful Mayor of Southampton, Councillor John Slade. The visit marked the award of the title Sea Cadet Mayor's Cadet for 2006-7 to Leading Cadet Marie Clouder, from Merry Oak.

Marie aged 17, who has been in the Sea Cadets for five years, was chosen from the fifty strong Cadet Unit in Bitterne Manor for her friendly and approachable manner and excellent presentation. She will serve as Mayor’s Cadet for the term of office the current Mayor.

Commanding Officer Sub Lt (SCC) Mark Lampert (RNR), who nominated Marie, commented “We are all very proud of Leading Cadet Clouder and I am sure that she will be an excellent ambassador for both the City of Southampton and the Sea Cadet Corps. We wish her well with all of the civic functions that she attends with the Mayor”.

Councillor Slade, attended a special Mayoral Inspection of all the young people at the Unit, where he presented Marie with her badge of office, which includes The Arms of the City of Southampton. During the visit he was very impressed with the smartness and organisation of the small Unit and said that everyone seemed to be thoroughly enjoying themselves.

District Swimming Competition

Well done to the Cadets who represented the Unit at the District Swimming Competition at Bovington Army Camp.

Not only did we come back with the Junior Girls trophy, a number of the Unit were picked to represent the Unit and Wessex District at the Area competition.

Ships Visit - HMS Ledbury

One Sunday in July four Cadets went on a mine countermeasures vessel HMS Ledbury during a training exercise also including HMS Atherstone.

We all got up early to get to HMS Ledbury for a 0900 sailing. When we got to the ship we found groups of other Cadets from more then seven other Units there.

Over the six hours we had at sea we took part in activities like ships damage control, gunnery and learning about the diving they do. We where also meant to swap some cadets across ships during a transfer but couldn’t in the end because of the health and safety rules!

After a long and enjoyable day we finally got back around 1700, ready to go home and relax.

So what is it you don't like about the Sea Cadets...?

On 23 May, HRH The Duke of York visited Southampton Unit, one of the smallest in the country, in his capacity as Admiral of the Sea Cadet Corps.

After being greeted by a guard of honour, HRH witnessed the diverse motor and sailing vessels utilised by the Unit and a demonstration of PT by the Junior Cadets, soon discovering how the Unit came to be awarded the Stephenson Trophy, having been judged the best Unit in Southern Area in 2005.

During the visit the Prince presented a Burgee, the standard of excellence in the Corps, to the oldest and youngest Cadets in the Unit and First Lieutenant CPO Jenny Lambert received the Cadet Forces Medal for more than 12 years' meritorious service.

His Royal Highness spoke to each Cadet individually, but rendered 15-year-old Jenny Jones speechless by asking her what she didn't like about TS Southampton. He told her he needed an answer by the end of his visit. Forty-five minutes later Jenny triumphantly announced: "The one thing I don't like about the Unit is that we only parade twice a week!"

HRH The Duke of York to visit T.S. Southampton

His Royal Highness the Duke of York will visit TS Southampton, one of the smallest Sea Cadet Units in the Country, on 23 May 2006, in his capacity as Admiral of the Sea Cadet Corps.

The Unit will demonstrate some of the attributes which enabled them to be assessed as the top Unit in the Southern Area. HRH will be greeted by a cadet guard of honour before witnessing the diverse motor and sailing vessels utilised by the Unit and then meeting the cadets, adult volunteers and parents.

Before departure HRH will present the Unit with their Burgee; the standard of excellence for the Corps and the Cadet Forces Medal to the Unit’s First Lieutenant CPO Jenny Lampert.

Southampton Sea Cadets Compete for National Title

After months of preparation the young people from Southampton Sea Cadets had their big chance to show the head of their organisation what can do, by representing Southern England in the Canada Trophy.

The Canada Trophy was first presented by the Navy League of Canada in 1947 to commemorate the first visit by Canadian Sea Cadets to the UK. Today it is presented to the Sea Cadet Unit in the United Kingdom with highest standard of all-round efficiency during the previous year.

One Unit from each Sea Cadet Area is selected to represent their locality, and these six top Units then compete for the coveted trophy. The assessment covers not only the Cadet achievements over the last year, but also the standard and condition of the Unit’s building, its equipment, uniform cleanliness as well Cadets’ personal marching and bearing.

Commodore Laurie Brokenshire CBE RN (Retd) and the Director of Policy & Development Commander Neville Gaunt RN from The Marine Society & Sea Cadets, attended the Unit based in Bitterne Manor, along with a host of local dignitaries including The Right Worshipful Mayor of Southampton; Councillor Edwina Cooke, Rear Admiral Tony Whetstone, the Unit’s Patron, Southampton's former Harbour Master Captain James Chestnutt, the Unit’s President, Captain George Angas the Captain of the Southampton Master Mariners as well as Mr Andrew Tilbury from VT Halmatic who joined the parents and supporters as they watched the evening’s events unfold.

The 43 Cadets, aged 10 to 17 from all around the Southampton area, were each addressed personally by the Commodore before they put on two displays for the
assembled guests and parents.

At the end of the evening Commanding Officer, Sub Lt (SCC) Mark Lampert commented: “Everyone has worked really to make this night exceptional and after all the preparation the Cadets and Staff put on an amazing display with the fun and humour that makes this Unit special shining through”

If the group wins they will be declared the best Sea Cadet Unit within the whole of the United Kingdom. This means as well as holding the Canada Trophy for one year, each member of the Unit is awarded a Maple leave badge to wear on their uniform for the rest of their cadet career and an individual medal. The final result will be announced on Friday 24th February.

We did it again! - District Drill and Piping Competition

Twenty five cadets, aged 12 to 17, represented T.S. Southampton at the annual Wessex District Drill competition, in the unarmed squad drill, the colour guard, and the team and individual piping categories.

Held in the imposing drill sheds aboard H.M.S. Excellent in Portsmouth, the teams competed against Cadets from Bournemouth, Salisbury, Parkstone, Poole and Winchester. All of the cadets are marked on the standard and cleanliness of their uniform and their personal drill and bearing, as well as the specialist aspects of the individual competitions.

In the unarmed squad drill thirteen Cadets have to do a ten minute synchronised marching routine, whilst staying in time with each other. The colour guard have to undertake the ceremonial aspects of carrying a colour or flag and the pipers have to demonstrate 4 different tunes played on a bosuns call or whistle, either individually or as part of a team.

This year T.S. Southampton managed to beat off stiff competition to retain the unarmed drill trophy and the individual piping and team piping, with the colour guard coming a respectable 2nd place to a much more mature and senior team.

Commanding Officer, Sub. Lt. (SCC) Mark Lampert commented, "Our cadets never cease to amaze me with the amount of effort that they put in. This is only mirrored by their results in fact in one of the competitions over the weekend the cadets from Southampton retained a trophy that they first won in 1999 and have held it since. In all a first class result by a first class group of young people."

This means that these young people from all over Southampton will be representing Wessex District for the 6th year running at the southern England competition in the beginning of April.

We wish them luck!

Surprise Win at District Shooting Competition

A team from Southampton Sea Cadets triumphed over seven other teams from around Hampshire and Dorset to win the District .22 shooting competition held at Tipner Ranges in Portsmouth.

A/C Tom Magill, O/C William Toogood, O/C Nail Welsh and A/C Chris Tuck, scored 93 points more then the second place team for a comfortable win.

Commanding Officer Sub Lt (SCC) Mark Lampert RNR, commented “This was an amazing result. It is the first time our Unit has ever won the .22 shooting competition. Considering two of the team had never shot with this type of rifle before we where all very impressed by their result and hopefully it will lead to greater things in the future”.

The Cadets shot on an indoor 25 metre range, under the strict supervision of qualified range conductors. The ability to hit targets at that distance requires complete calm and concentration from the Cadets as well as remembering the main principles of good marksmanship whilst under pressure.

Tom Magill and Nial Welsh achieved 1st and 3rd place respectively, out of 28 individual competitors and will make up part of the Wessex District Team competing in the Sea Cadet Southern England competition in 26th February 2006.

Best Unit in Southern Area!

The young people of Southampton Sea Cadets have a busy two months approaching.

It has just been announced they are the winners of the Sea Cadet Stephenson Trophy meaning they are the best unit of Cadets in Southern England for 2005.

It also means that they will have to compete against 5 other units around the UK for the coveted Canada Trophy.

The Canada Trophy was first presented by the Navy League of Canada in 1947 to commemorate the first visit by Canadian Sea Cadets to the UK, and to reflect the close relationship between the two Services during World War II, these days it is presented to the best Sea Cadet Unit in the United Kingdom with highest standard of all-round efficiency during the previous year.

Winning the Stephenson trophy is an amazing achievement and shows the hard work and dedication of everyone at the Southampton Unit, but it does mean a lot more hard work for the young people of the Unit and their volunteer staff.

Not only the are Cadet achievements over the last year assessed, but the standard and condition of the building and its equipment, the Cadets and staff uniform and drill, so there is a lot of preparation going on in their small headquarters in Bitterne Manor for the inspection in February.

Commanding Officer, Sub Lt Mark Lampert remarked this is a fantastic result especially as it has been judged on the efforts and achievements of our young people. It just goes to show that if the young people of today take the opportunities offered to them there is no end to what they can achieve.
