Trafalgar Parade London 25-10-09
On 25th October Cadets from South West Area took part in the annual Trafalgar Parade in London.
14 Cadets from our Unit were involved with the parade and we must congratulate them on taking part in such a memorable event.

Captain's visit 14-09-09
On the 14th September the Commanding Officer of HMS Ark Royal, Captain J R H Clink OBE – our affiliated ship -, paid a visit to the Unit to see first-hand what we have to offer the youth of Shirley.
In addition to the Captain the Deputy Mayor and Mayoress of Solihull (Cllr David Bell and Mrs Sally Bell), Councillor Gary Allport and our District Officer Lt Cdr (SCC) Gary Truelove (RNR) were in attendance.
A pleasant evening was had by all and the Captain was overly pleased with the Cadets and Staff and the facilities provided by the Committees.

Navy Days 05/06-09-09
Cadets from the Unit took part in the Annual Navy Days being help this year in Plymouth.
SCC had a great presence on the ground and in the ships, made a big impact in the Arena displays (the Cardiff Field Gun and the Swansea/Drake/Shirley/Tewkesbury Guard), provided a window ladder on RFA MOUNTS BAY's flight deck (Tameside), assisted with management of the public on ships, helped the RN sell loads of programmes, rattled tins for Seafarers and so on.
Although it was a very tiring 2 days and some of the Cadets got back to their homes very late we know that they thoroughly enjoyed their stay there.

District Sailing Comp 05-07-09
On Sunday 5th July Cadets from our Unit together with those from units within Warwickshire area went to Shustoke waterpark for the annual sailing evnt.
Congrates to all those who took part.

District Reggata 26-28/06-09
The annual reggata took place over the weekend 26th to 28 June at Sutton Park on the Peters Pool lake.
Some 200+ Cadets attend this event from all the Units within the Warwickshire area.
Although the Friday was rather "wet" the Cadets and Staff involved knuckled down to enjoying the rest of the weekend and the competitions that took place.
Well done to those who took part.

District Canoe Comp 07-06-09
4 Cadets from the unit together with those from the other nine Units with the Warwickshire area took part in the District Canoe (paddle Sport) competition on 7th June.
All cadets from our Unit did well with one Cadet going through to the area event.

District ET comp 09/10-05-09
Six Cadets from the unit took part in the District Expedition Training competition over the weekend 9th and 10th May at Long-Mynd in Shropshire.
They successfully completed the competition and gained second place from the units from the District who took part.
Due to the Cadet Leader of the winning team (Tamworth Unit) attaining the age of 18 before the Area event takes place in September our Cadets, by default, will now take part in the Area competition. Congratulations to those who took part.

Shirley Donkey Derby 02-05-09
Cadets and members of the P&SA, with the assistance of a member of Staff, manned a stall at the annual Donkey Derby in Shirley Park.
The successful event raised £437 for the Unit which included proceeds from the sale of programmes sold during the previous 3 weeks and from the stall on the day.

Bag Packing event 04-04-09
On Saturday 4th April Cadets and supporters took part in a bag-packing fund-raising event at Sainsbury's Supermarket in Shirley, Solihull.
During the 6 hours the Cadets were there the visitors and customers to the store donated a tidy sum of £555.90.
This will be used for the maintenance of equipment.
Many thanks go to those who took part and of course to the people of Shirley & Solihull who made donations.

Area Drill & Piping Competition 28-02-09
Being a young squad and never had to face up to experienced drill teams the Cadets from Shirley & District did extremely well in the Area competition.
The squad of 13 Cadets not only excelled at all levels of the event but gained "runner-up" status in the Armed Guard section as did Cadet Alex Stewart by obtaining a Silver medal as "Best Guard Commander".
There were 9 Squads from all over the South West area taking part in the Armed Guard section.

Drill & Piping competition 08-02-09
Cadets from the Unit took part in the District Drill and Piping competition held at the TA7 premises in Coventry.
As in previous years the cadets excelled in the Armed Guard event taking first place and Cdt A Stewart obtained the "Best Drill Commander" prize.
Congratulations to all involved.
The Cadets now go forward to the Area event being held at HMS Raleigh on 28th February.

Collection 31-01-09 & 01-02-09
Cadets from the Unit took part in a can collection at Morrison's Supermarket in Solihull on the above dates.
It has been some time since this type of collection has taken place and it was a resounding success with the shoppers at Morrison's donating a few pence over £390.
Many thanks goes to the Cadets who took part and to the members of the public who donated funds.

HMS Ark Royal 12/15-01-09
MORE than 100 lucky cadets – probably the largest gathering ever afloat – have been enjoying life on the Fleet Flagship, HMS Ark Royal.
10 Cadets and 3 Staff from our Unit together with other Sea Cadets and Combined Cadet Force youngsters, 108 in total from units all over the country, joined the carrier in Portsmouth for her passage to Liverpool.
Living, sleeping and, when sea-sickness allowed, eating onboard, the cadets were treated to an exciting taste of RN life, including leaving and entering harbour, aircraft operations from the flight deck, and observing challenging engineering scenarios.
They also conducted seamanship and first-aid training.

Collection 20-12-08
On Saturday 20th December the Cadets, Staff and Committee members took part in a "bag-packing" fund raising event at Morrison's Supermarket in Shirley.
The eight-hour stint (from 09.00 till 17.00) raised a few pence over £1083 from the event (including the sale of Trolley Tokens).
Our thanks go to the members of the public of Shirley who kindly donated funds during this event and to those members of the Unit who put their time and effort into this fund raising.

Presentation Evening 22-11-08
On Saturday 22nd November the Mayor and Mayoress of Solihull (Cllr David Bell and Mrs Sally Bell) attended the annual presentation evening at the Unit.
The mayor presided over the presentation of trophies and shields to those cadets who had excelled at various activities at the Unit.
Following the presentations the Mayor and Mayoress were fed and watered before being given a tour of the Cadet premises.
In appreciation of their attendance at the presentation evening the Mayor was given a pen endorsed with the Unit logo and address and the Mayoress had flowers.
An enjoyable night was had by all and congratulations were passed on to the Cadets who were involved in the evening and this was confirmed within the closing speech from the Mayor and Mayoress.

Remembrance Parade 09-11-08
The Cadets along with those from the ACF, Guides, Brownies, Scouts, Cubs and the members of the Shirley Royal British Legion paraded along Stratford Road from the Legion building to St James church for the Remembrance service. (see Picture Gallery)

Charity Car Wash 11-10-08
Cadets and supporters were involved in a Charity Car Wash event in the Unit Compound on Saturday 11th October.
Total funds raised at the event totalled £220, which will be used for the benefit of the Cadets in maintaining the Unit premises, transport and boating equipment. Thank got to all who helped and to the residents of Shirley who kindly donated funds.

RYA Sailing Course 27/28-09-08
9 Cadets and staff took part in a RYA Level 2 course over this weekend.
Congratulations to all those who took part and completed the course, gaining much needed qualifications.

District Swimming Competition 13-09-08
Well done to all the Cadets, aged 12 to 15, who took part in this swimming event and to Able Cadet Stewart who gained first place in two of his heats.

Area Sailing Competition 2/3-08-08
Well done to AB Connor Rault at the Area Sailing competition by attaining 5th place in the Topper Fleet event against 18 entries to the event

Area Regatta 26/27-07-08
Congratulations to all who took part and to both AC William Davies and POC Matthew Shepherd.
William and Matthew attained 2nd place in the canoe relay competition and Matthew gained 3rd pace in the Singles Sprint event.

Congratulations to those Cadets who took part in the sailing competition last Sunday.
Special congratulations go to Able Cadet C Rault who took the Topper prize and now goes on to the Area competition.

Car Wash 05-07-08
On Saturday 5th July the Cadets and Supporters of the Unit undertook a Car Wash event at the Unit site in order to raise much needed funds.
Thanks go to all who took part and the residents of Shirley and Solihull who donated funds for having their cars cleaned.
We raised a few pence over £280 on the day

District Regatta 27/29-06-08
Well done to all the Cadets who took part in the annual District Regatta at Powells Pool, Sutton Coldfield over this weekend.
Not only was the weather kind to us but the younger members of the Units Cadets did us proud.
The cadets were in fine form. They performed well, displaying outstanding team spirit which ensured the smooth flow of the weekend.

District Canoe Comp 08-06-08
Congratulations to the Cadets who took part in the recent District Canoe Competition.
Senior Boys won the Senior Relay event and Matthew Shepherd took top prize at the Senior Boys Sprint event.

Visit to Mayors Parlour 12-05-08
In appreciation of the success of Cadets at the recent National Drill and Ceremonial Competition the Mayor and Mayoress of Solihull (Cllr Gary Allport and Mrs Gail Allport) invited the winning squad to a re-presentation ceremony at Solihull Council House.
The Mayor offered his congratulations to the Cadets for their success. An official photograph of the Squad was presented to the Mayor at the end of the presentations.
Parents of the Cadets involved where also invited to attend.
Following the ceremony the visitors were shown around the Council premises, the Council Chambers and finally the Mayors Parlour.

ET competition 10-11/05/08
Over the weekend of 10th to 11th May six Cadets from the Unit took part in the District Expedition Training Competition held at Beaudessert.
A great weekend was had by all but they eventually succumbed to the skills of other Units and finally ended in fouth place out of a possible 10 Units taking part from within the District.
Congrats to all those who took part, including Staff.

Shirley Donkey Derby 03-05-08
On 3rd May 2008 the Cadets and Supporters got involved with the Shirley Donkey Derby event held on Shirley Park.
A good day was had by all and was attended by residents of Shirley and Solihull.
The Unit raised approx £800 in total including the sale of programmes in the weeks leading up to the event.
Many thanks to the supporters and Cadets who helped.

National Drill and Ceremonial winners 27-04-2008
The 13 Cadets from T.S.Gamecock excelled at the National Drill and Ceremonial competitions held at HMS Raleigh over the weekend 25th-27th April 2008.
The Cadets took "Best Guard Commander - Matthew Shepherd", "Best Armed Guard" and "Best Arena Display".
Congratulations to all Cadets who took part.

WWII comes to Shirley 15-03-08
On Saturday 15th March there was held at the Unit a 40's night to commemorate the war years and the Big Band sounds of that era.
The event consisted of a 10 piece band playing tunes from Glenn Miller and the like.
Included within the evening was a traditional Fish & Chip supper, a Raffle and an Auction which included some WWII memorabilia.
All those who attended were dressed in uniforms of that time be-they UK, USA or German forces as well as Land-Girls and Nurses.
A great evening was had by all.

Area Drill & Cermonial Competition 01/02-03-08
For the fourth year running congratulations must be given the the Unit Arm Drill squad.
They have excelled again at the competition at HMS Raleigh gaining top marks in their section and walking away with the trophy.
Congratulations also to LC Craig Sharpe for being the "Best Dressed" cadet and to LC Matthew Shepherd who came second as "Drill Commander"

Bag Packing at Morrison's Shirley 16-02-08
Although this is the first time we have held this event at the Shirley store it was a very profitable event and thanks must be given to those members of the public who donated funds to the Unit, to the Manager and Staff of Morrison's for allowing us to offer our services and to the Cadets and Supporters who gave up their time to raise much needed funds.

Presentation Evening 24-11-07
The Unit held their annual presentation evening on this Saturday in the company of the Mayor and Mayoress of Solihull (Cllr Gary Allport and Mrs Gail Allport).
Congratulations are passed on to those Cadets who excelled during the current year and received Trophies and Shields in evidence of this.
The evening went extremely well with about 110 people being in attendance. We even had a LtCmd from another district being an invited guest of the Mayor.

Seamanship Competition 04-11-07
Although only six of the ten Units within the Warwickshire district attended the Seamanship competition held at the Shirley Unit on Sunday 4th November the Shirley Unit cadets did extremely well being placed 3rd overall.
Congratulations must be given to those Cadets who attended and to the Cadets, Staff and supporters who made sure the day ran smoothly.

Car Wash 13-10-07
We held a further Charity Car wash on Saturday 13th October in the Unit compound.
Very worthwhile event involving Cadets and Committee members.
We raised just under £300 before expenses which will be used for general Unit maintenance.
Thanks to all involved and the residents of Shirley/Solihull who donated funds by having their vehicles cleaned.

Lorely Burt MP visit 12-10-07
It was with great pleasure that we welcomed Mrs Lorely Burt the local Solihull Member of Parliament to the Unit.
Following Colours, she met with all the Cadets on parade that evening and spoke to each of them individually.
During Stand-Easy she met and spoke to Staff and Committee members.
Following a tour of the Unit and to each of the classes in progress after stand-easy, Mrs Burt officiated at the units Evening Colours.
The evening was rounded off with a drink in the Wardroom.

Flag Day - Solihull -22-09-07
On the 22nd of September the Cadets, Staff and supporters held their annual Flag Day collection in Solihull Town Centre.
We would like to thank all those who donated on the day and helped raise a tidy sum of £649.63 which will be used to fund the maintenance of equipment and buildings for the use of the Cadets.

Ark Royal Visit 11/13-06-07
Cadets and Staff spent a couple of days on the Ark Royal during its journey down to the Thames for the Falklands’ celebrations.
Thanks go to the ships company of the Ark Royal for a most enjoyable 3 days.

Shirley Donkey Derby 05-05-07
The fundraising arm of the Unit together with Cadets will be manning a stall at this year's Donkey Derby being held on Shirley Park.
This has usually been a good PR and fund raising event so we hope this year will be the same.
Review
This, as Usual, was a successful event with over £800 raised, before expenses.
Many thanks go to the Cadets and Supporters of the Unit for their help on the day and to the residents of Shirley & Solihull for attending the Donkey Derby and making it a success for all the Charities involved.

2 weeks up to 05-05-07
Cadets, Staff and Committee members will be walking the streets on the week-day evenings leading up to the 5th May trying to persuade members of the Shirley and Solihull public to part with their valuable money to purchase programmes for the forthcoming Shirley Donkey Derby.
We anticipate selling in the region of 1000 programmes during the two weeks (this has been achieved during the last two years so it is do-able).
Review
Well done to all who helped, Cadets and Unit supporters. We sold all 1000 programmes in 9 nights of walking the streets. Thanks also to the residents of Shirley who purchased the entrance programmes.

Charity Fashion Show 11-04-07
In conjunction with "Next One" the fund raising arm of the Unit will be holding a Ladies Fashion Show at the Unit headquarters.
The show starts at 8pm (20.00) and will end at approx 10pm (22.00)
A fee per person is made for entrance to the event, which includes a glass of wine, of £2.50.

Review
The fashion show held in conjunction with 'Next One' was a great success with over 40 people attending.
It was a lively and entertaining evening for all who came and the Unit raised over £150.
Many thanks are offered to all who attended and those who ran the evening.

Car Wash held on 24-03-07
The car wash was a tremendous event with it being advertised in the 3 local (free) newspapers and one paper even included a picture of the Unit Vice Chairman promoting the event of the front page.
Cadets and supporters were busy from 0930 until 1630 and raised much need funds totalling £500
Thanks go to all who helped and to local residents who took time to have their cars cleaned

Drill & Piping 2007
As in previous years congratulation must be given to our Unit Armed Guard squad.
Not only did the excel at the District competition but they also took Best Armed Guard, Best Armed Guard Commander and Best Dressed Cadet at the Area competition.
They missed the Gold at the National competition losing by a solitary single point at the event held at HMS Raleigh.

Presentation Evening 20-01-07
The Unit will be holding it's annual Presentation evening in the company of the Mayor of Solihull and the District Officer on 20th January.
The event will be a celebration of the hard work undertaken by Cadets during the previous 12 months and various certificates and trophy's will be presented to those who have excelled in their specialisation.

Prize Draw 09-12-06
Earlier in the year we had donated a signed Birmingham City Football Club 2006 shirt.
The unit during October and November sold tickets as part of a raffle for this shirt and as such raised much need funds for the Unit.
The official draw for the raffle took place at the Unit following evening colours on the 9th December.

Bag Packing 25-11-06
For further fund raising it has been agreed with a local branch of Sainsbury that Cadets may assist customers to fill their shopping bags with groceries purchased.
It is hoped that the shoppers at Sainsbury will be generous with donations to enable needed funds to be raised

Shirley Carnival 08-07-06
On 8th July 2006 the Unit P&SA and Cadets will be fund-raising at the forthcoming Carnival in Shirley Park organised by the Shirley Lions.

We thank all those residents of Shirley who took advantage of this charitable event and enabled us to raise £278 for Unit funds.

Shirley Donkey Derby 06-05-06
On the 6th May 2006 the Unit held a stall at the local Donkey Derby organised by The Rotary Club of Shirley.
The event went extremely well with all charities raising much needed funds for their causes.
The Mayor of Solihull attended the event and officially opened proceedings at 1245.

Drill & Ceremonial
For the third year running the Cadets of T.S.Gamecock have excelled in the District and Area Drill & Ceremonial competitions and are now sending Cadets to the National finals to compete in the ‘Armed Guard’ section. They are defending their success of last year.

Pico purchases
Our many thanks go to the Solihull Community Foundation who have provided funds to enable us to purchase 4 brand new “Pico’s” and trailers for the use of cadets during the forthcoming boating season and for future years.

Cash 4 Cans
Shirley Sea Cadets started collecting cans to raise money for expedition equipment for the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme in 2002. Committee member Sheila Reith saw an advert in the local paper for Andrews Metals, Solihull, the local Cash for Cans centre, and they have been collecting cans ever since.
Lieutenant Nicholls comments: "Cans are collected in a variety of ways, Cadets bring them in from home, Cadets purchase cans of pop in their break and the empties are put in the recycling box and we organise litter picks for empty cans which also keeps the local area litter free as well as helping us raise funds."
