Calling all Adults
We Need Your Help
Are you interested in helping the youth of Shirley/Solihull and surrounding districts?
Are you willing to spend some of your free time in maintaining a training facility and helping run an organisation specifically aimed at youth within this area?
Are you willing to do this on a voluntary basis which will take, initially, no more than 5 hours a week?
The local Shirley & District Sea Cadets are on the look-out for Adults of any age who are willing and able to assist the existing supporters of the Unit.
We greatly value our adult volunteers, without whom the organisation could not function, and support and train them, whatever their previous experience and skills.
There are opportunities for both teaching the Cadets in the enormous variety of subjects that we offer, and also supporting their activities via Parents’ and Supporters’ Associations and Unit Management Committees.
We need administrators and DIY experts; people willing to run the snack bar and others to drive the minibus; canoeists and IT enthusiasts, Electricians, Mechanics etc. If you’ve got a skill, we can find an outlet for it. And you can even pick up some new skills and qualifications yourself along the way! It doesn't matter whether you’ve got previous experience dealing with young people or not - we're just looking for willing volunteers who want to be part of the team and enjoy the satisfaction of seeing Cadets develop and mature. As you’d expect, all our volunteers are rigorously vetted.
This experience will be passed on to the Cadets of the Shirley & District Unit on a voluntary basis which will, initially, be for up to 5 hours per week.

The local business community
We, as a Cadet Unit, are providing the young people in our area the unique opportunity to take part in a wide variety of healthy outdoor activities with a nautical theme.
Our aims are to help young people to develop the team working and social skills that will stand them in good stead throughout their adult life.
Although we have been successful in obtaining a number of grants for the purchase of equipment for the Cadets we still have to raise a sum of around £20,000 each year to cover items such as Council Tax, Rent, Heating, Insurance, etc.
The Units members of Staff and Committee members are all unpaid volunteers, and every pound we raise is spent for the benefit of the Cadets.
We are seeking sponsorship from the Local Business Community to help us keep our boats on the water and our transport on the road and meet the Cadets training needs.
We are looking for sponsorship from local businesses in either of two methods: 1. by a regular donation for a sum of, say, £20 per month. These small but regular amounts will make all the difference in keeping the Unit viable. 2. by one-off donations to meet maintenance needs and to provide promotional materials to enable us to market the local Sea Cadet Unit to the youth of Shirley and local Districts.
Gifts of money to UK charities by companies are made before tax is deducted (i.e. out of gross income or profits) so no Gift Aid declaration is required.
Companies can claim tax relief for donations to UK charities as a charge against income in their corporation tax computation.
You can become a sponsor by contacting us via the unit email address below or contact Ken McNally (Unit Vice Chairman) on 0121 779 8552 during normal working hours, or email him at kenmcnally@tiscali.co.uk.
