Area Drill Success

Following on from the District Drill and Piping Sheppey went onto a good result at the Southern Area Competition. The event took place on 6th March 2010 at HMS Excellent in Portsmouth. Sheppey provided West Kent with the Colour Party, Armed Guard and the whole Piping team.
The Armed Guard commanded by POC Daniel Bower were the best dressed guard of the day and came in as fourth for their drill display.
The Colour Party commanded by POC Kerr Jeferies were also the best dressed colour party of the day and were awarded 3rd place and a bronze for their display.
Once again the Piping Team did extremely well winning the best dressed piping team, 1st and 2nd individually for POC Josh Firth and AC Adam Steele, and combined with POC Lewis Newman came 1st Overall as a team.
Congratulations to Dartford unit who represented West Kent District in the Unarmed Squad and came in 3rd for best dressed and fourth overall. Also to Chatham Marines who came in 2nd overall for their drill display.

Great Achievement at District Drill and Piping

Sheppey Drill & Piping Teams

After a fair number of cold evenings practising until fingers became numb and a whole weekend of training Sheppey Sea Cadets were extremely triumphant at the West Kent District Drill & Piping Competition last weekend.

The Armed Drill squad commanded by POC Daniel Bower came 1st both as a team and the Guard Commander.

The Colour Party consisting of POC Kerr Jeferies, POC Kieron Hughes, AC Jake Summers, Cdt Charlie Firth with Cdt Daniel Snook fought hard to take first place.

The Piping team (POC Lewis Newman, LC Joshua Firth and AC Adam Steele) continued on the success of recent years taking 1st place overall and wining 1st and 2nd place individually.

The Unarmed Squad commanded by AC Zoe Titmarsh also did well and came 2nd as a team and the Squad Commander.

This is an excellent acheivement as the first time that TS Kent has ever won at Armed Drill, this has set us on a great start to 2010.

National Five-a-side Football 2010

Four cadets from T.S. Kent represented Southern Area and West Kent District at the National five-a-side football competition which was held at RAF Cosford near Wolverhampton.
The Event which took place over the last weekend of January proved to be a tough challenge and the team ended up finishing in 4th Place amogst the other Junior Boys.
The team were

Cdt Daniel Snook
and three cadets from Medway Towns Sea Cadet Unit.

The Southern Area Senior Girls from Eastbourne and made it into the final narrowly missing out to Eastern Area and finishing 2nd overall.

Sheppey selected as KM Charity of the Year

T.S. Kent has been selected as KM's Charity of the Year in Sheerness for 2010. This means that we will receive the full backing of the newspaper and kmfm, highlighting our work and any special fund-raising projects we undertake during the year.The KM Charity Team and kmfm also aims to stage one or more fund-raising events to support us. Sheppey Celebrates with Captain of the Corps

Captain Mark Windsor presents awards to the Ships Company

After a very successful year in 2008 Sheppey Sea Cadets have just about managed to squeeze in a night to beat the drum and tell the world about it, Thursday 1st October saw T.S. Kent celebrate winning the Stephenson Trophy last year. The Sea Cadets new man in charge Captain Mark Windsor RN was the VIP for the evening inspecting the guard and being shown the activities on offer and facilities at the Bartons Point based unit.
The other Honoured Guests for the evening were Mayor and Mayoress of Swale Cllr Adrian Crowther and Mrs Pamela Berry, Deputy Mayor of Queenborough Jeffrey Andrews, Representatives from the Minster Rotary Club, Isle of Sheppey Round Table, Sheppey’s former commanding officer Peter Puxty and PC Heidi Korff and PC Adrian Goodsall from Kent Police.
The Captain and VIP's were shown around the unit by Commanding Officer Lt (SCC) Brian Moore RNR where Unit Instructors demonstrated some of the subjects we offer.
The Sea Cadets want to deliver as much as possible to its young people, keeping fit is an important part of life, PO Jade Johnson took at class of Junior Sea Cadets for some Physical Training in the form of "Skip Jump".
In the Classrooms PO Joe Ford was taking New Entries for some Basic Seamanship and POC Kerr Jeferies was teaching Basic camp craft. On the water and braving the dark cold weather PO Elliott Jayes showed off the unit’s excellent boatwork facilities in one of the pulling craft and of course, all this boating means the boats regularly have to undergo routine maintenance, PO Adam Montgomery was passing on skills to one of the senior cadets in the workshop.
CPO Deanne Moore was in the 25 yard range shooting with two of the successful small bore shooting team from Sheppey. Sheppey Unit really encourage its senior cadets to pass on knowledge they have gained during their sea cadet career, AC Gillian Rogers was on hand to show some younger cadets some of the finer points of dining, some very ornate napkin folds proved popular with the Captain.
The Sea Cadets prides itself on keeping naval traditions alive and one of the oldest of those is the use of the traditional Boatswains call, used in the days of wooden sailing ships the call was used to pass messages quickly around the ship, PO Leisse Gambell was showing some of the young cadets some of the basic calls.
The Captain finished the evening presenting a number of awards to the Ships Company, Daniel Foreman was promoted to Petty Officer Cadet which is the highest rate that can be achieved by a cadet and CPO Fiona Louch was presented the first clasp to her Cadet Forces Medal in recognition of 18 years service to the Sea Cadets.
Captain Windsor finished by saying "I really enjoyed my visit to TS Kent and in particular meeting all of the cadets, volunteers and supporters of the unit. I am very impressed with what I have seen here and it is clear that TS Kent stands out as an excellent unit of which all concerned should be very proud”
Captain Mark Windsor RN took over the top position in the Sea Cadets in July 2009 and became the Director of Operations of our Parent Charity The Marine Society and Sea Cadets.
The Stephenson Trophy is awarded every year to the top performing unit in each of the UK’s 6 Areas. Sheppey has done very well to win the top award twice in the past three years. (1st October 2009)

Sheppey Sailor comes back with Medal

Area Officer with the Southern Area Sailing Team

Congratulations go to LC Lewis Newman who acheived 3rd Place in the National Sailing Regatta at Stockport. Sailing a Laser Pico Lewis finished 2nd, 5th and 3rd in three of the races leaving him 3rd overall, this helped Southern Area finish in second overall being beaten by Eastern Area. Southern Area now sit in first place in the Peter Riley Trophy with only Shooting Results to come in.

West Kent District Specialisation Training

PO Firth teaches cadets about Radio Communications

Over the weekend 26th and 27th September, 9 Cadets from Sheppey unit joined 23 others from around the district onboard HMS Cavalier to take part in a District Specilisation Weekend. The Cadets took part in Seamanship, Communications, First Aid and Chartwork. All 32 Cadets that attended were succesful and passed their respective qualifications.
Officer in Charge Lt (SCC) Mark Gambell RNR said "We are lucky to have such a facility in the District and having the ability to apply the knowledge onboard a real ship really helps the young people in their qualifications."

PO Ford learns the ropes!

After taking a weeks course at the Royal Navy's Shore Establishment, HMS Raleigh in Torpoint, Petty Officer Joe Ford has qualified as and Advanced Seamanship Instructor. This will enable cadets from Sheppey Unit to learn about the art of Boat Handling and Ropework and be signed off up to 2nd Class level. (11th Sept 2009)

Promotion Success at District Board

Five cadets from Sheppey attended a District Promotion Board on 5th and 6th September, the board was held onboard HMS Cavalier at the Chatham Historic Dockyard. Leading Cadets Bower and Firth acheived a Pass with Leading Cadets Hughes and Newman acheiving a partial pass with an element to work on and retake.
The candidates were joined by several other members of the Ships Company who helped out by acting as students, squad members and team members for the leadership tasks.
The Candidates stayed onboard the newely opened accomodation on HMS Cavalier, this gives Sea Cadets and other youth groups an insite into life onboard a Royal Navy Destroyer. (6th Sept 2009)
