Staff Mast 2009
We had six members of staff go on the Southern Area Training Weekend. CPO Greenaway was instructing on First Aid, PO Piller passed his advance drill, PO Coles passed her basic drill, Sgt Paxford passed his blank firing supervisor, Sgt Rees gained an Instructional Methods level 3 and Miss Chalmers gained a level 2 in Instructional Methods. These qualifications can only help to the unit continue to grow. Well Done.

Halloween Party
On Thursday the unit held a fancy dress disco for the cadets. It was a chance for the cadets to bring a friend to enable them to see what we are all about. We had witches, ghosts, vampires, pirates and even some faries. Some of the staff also came in fancy dress. Our chairman Mr Wall the Vampire was the D.J for the evening. It was a chance for the cadets to relax after a busy couple of months.

Trafalgar Parade 2009
This years Trafalgar Day Parade was held in Henley, it was a very good turn out of both staff and cadets, four members of our unit took park in the guard. This was the last cadet event for Leading Cadet Williams is now 18 and has become our latest memeber of Staff. Welcome aboard Miss Williams. Photo's of the Parade will be put on as soon as they are downloaded.

Newbury Racecourse
Two memebrs of staff and nine cadets and two members of the committee were invited to attend the launching of the British Legion Poppy appeal on the 24th October. They were a credit the unit and SCC. They met a fairly new branch of the British Legion the motorcycles group, who were very impressed with our cadets and the cadets with them. We will be having a visit from this branch at the unit very shortly and two of them members will be joining us for our Prize giving evening.

Marine Advancement
The Berkshire Marine Detachments met at Reading Unit on 24th October for the advancement exams. The cadets from several detachments from around Berkshire. The exams included Dril, seamaship, map reading, corp history just to name but a few. We had two of our marine cadets to gain higher ranks. MC2 Shirley became L/cpl and MC2 Civanusic became MC1. Well to them both and the Marine Staff.

National Reggatta
Saturday 22nd August 2009, two of Reading unit represented Berkshire District in the paddle sports section. LC Charlotte Williams and A/C Rebecca Williams cames sixthin the doubles and A/C Rebecca Williams came 4th in the singles relay. A very good result. Reading unit is very proud of them both. Thanks to Mr Williams who went as support to both girls. They were part of the team that helped Southern Area gain the overall Regatta Trophy. Bravo Zulu

MARINE ADVANCEMENT
On April 5th two of our Marine's went on their advancement MC2 Harvey gained his L/CPL and MC2 Chandler became MC1. The assessment was held in Windsor. Well done to both Cadets. Sgt Paxford and TI A Rees also attended.

RNP 2009
On March 12th we held our annual RNP, the Inspecting Officer was AO Cdr A Giles, He inspected the Marine Cadet Guard, then the juniors followed by the rest of the cadets. After which the cadets carried out the major evolution which the titled " A Day Boating". Which showed the VIP's, parents and other guests just some of the things we do within cadets, water safety, meterology, communications, canoeing, pulling and first aid. All the props were made by the cadets themselves. The cadets and guests really enjoyed themselves. The whole evening went off really well.

CADET MAST 2009
It has been a very busy time for three of our cadets who have attended two weekend at Browndown Camp in Gosport to qualify in three different subjects. Leading Cadet Gearing passed her 1st class Seamanship, Able Cadet Allison passed both her 3rd and 2nd class First Aid and MC2 Chandler passed the first part of his PT3. Two Staff also spent the weekend there PPO Piller very bravely volunteered to do security and CPO Greenaway joined the First Aid team to teach.

District Drill 2009
Once again Reading took part in the District Drill and Piping compition. Reading entered a unarmed squad and a colour Party. Our Squad came first for the 14th year. The Squad Commander was A/C M Allison, the squad consisted of twelve cadets, L/C Gearing, L/C Williams, A/C's Constance, Williams, O/c's Hutchins, Figuiera-Jones, Abery and Cdt's Benham,Baker,Constance,Lepetit,Mungiai, A/C Williams also took the trophy for Best Dressed Cadet. Our Colour Party was a Marine Colour Party. They came 3rd which was a very good effort. The Colour Party cadets were MC2 Harvey,MC2 Chandler,MC2 Shirley, MC2 Vakulin and MC2 Civtanusic. We now take the squad to Area on the 15th March.

NEWBURY WEEKEND
November 21-23 was once again District Weekend we had nine cadets attend including two Marine Cadets.The weekend was a success as most of the cadets passed the courses they took wth a couple having to do the last part of theirs at the next Distict weekend. Cadets attending were L/C Gearing, A/C Williams C, A/C Allion, A/C Constance,O/C Figuera-Jones, MC2 Harvey, MC2 Chandler, Cdt Tocock and Cdt Lepetit

Marine Weekend
On the 10th October our six of marine cadets along with three of our Marine staff went on their assessment weekend. Over the whole weekend everything the cadets and staff did from cooking their own food, making their own bivvies, shooting, map reading, leadership was assessed by Area Staff. The cadets did a good job and enjoyed their weekend. I am happy to say the weather was very good to them sunshine the whole time.

Wales
On August Bank Holiday six members of staff went on a walking trip to Wales. Some of the staff have never walked before so some lessons had to be learnt such as map reading. We walked in Brecon Beacons and climbed Tabletop Mountain. The views were beautiful. It was a tiring but very enjoyable weekend. All of us enjoyed it so much that we have agreed to do to do it again next year.

PRU DAY
On the 14th August 2008 The Prudential asked for help with their fun day, they wanted cadets to teach each team to make a raft.They then had to encourage them on the water, while firing water water pistols at the opposite teams. 9 cadets which included Sea cadets,Marines and Juniors with 5 members of staff. The Prudential were kind enough to give the unit a donation for the cadets hard work!!!

Junior Team Leader Day
Three of our juniors took part in the junior leader day in Portsmouth where they do the PT training day. They had to do all types of games and exercises including their personal favourite star junps, they had to plan games to be played by the other cadets there including senior cadets. Three very happy and excited juniors returned.

Summer Camp
Some of our Marine cadets attended Summer Camp along with Sgt Paxford. On the first day they were arranged into their troop which was made up from cadets from other units. There were a lot of activities over the week such as shooting, CqB, setting up patrols communication, map reading, armed drill, Tarzan assault course which was hard physically and mentally. They came through as a strong troop. They visited the Royal Marine Museum where they were complimented on their good behaviour by the members of the public who were visiting at the same time. A good time was had by all and they are looking forward to the next camp.

Band Competiton 2008
On 22nd June our band took part in the Novice Band Competition at HMS Excellent in Portsmouth. They came second and were awarded a silver medal each which was presented by Major Henderson. The competition was based on the cadets state of dress, the condtion of the instruments and their performance on the Parade Square. They did an excellent job. The musical director is Mr Peter Border, the Band Master is Sgt J Holland and assistant Band Master is Mr Harper. Our Drum Major is A/C Charlotte Williams. The band have been playing together for about eight months. The band get together to practice once a week on a Wednesday evening.

barracks open day
On Saturday 21st June 2008 Brock Barracks open their gates to the general public. Reading Sea Cadets had stall to show te publicabout Sa Cadets. There was a lot of interest. Our cadets were on hand to show other youngsters some of the things we do, L/C Gearing A/C Allison and A/C Williams R did some piping on the bosuns call, which aroused the intrest of a young man who was shown how to do a few calls. A/C Allison and A/C Williams also did some ropework. There were several cadets from both Sea Cadets and the Marine Cadets who took part in the day along with several members of staff including PO Coles, Mr Harper and CPO Greenaway and Unit Chairman Mr Wall.

Tilehurst Show
Reading Sea cadets took part in this years Tilehurst Show. Sgt Piller who organised the Sea Cadets taking part in the show orgsnised a raffle to raise funds for the unit by asking local vendor to kindly donate prizes. The prizes were varied from Bakery to Jewellery. The Sea Cadet Band put on an excellent display, the Marine Detatchment put on a display of a Kazi Vac and a Colour Party Display. We have had a great response from the general public who enjoyed the cadets preformances very much.

Giant sleepover
On 14th June Reading Juniors took part in Guiness Book of Records Giant sleepover. We were able to use Farnham unit for the sleepover. Four of Reading Juniors Jnr Lepetit B, Jnr 1st Class Lepetit C, Jnr Tooser, even N/E Mundy was able to join us as the day was arrange before she came in the senior section. Jnr Harvey-Neven from Farnham unit also joined in the fun. The evening was a fun filled time with lots of games, puzzles, we were even invited to have our evening meal in the officers wardroom. The evening was finished off with a movie. On Sunday morning there was a sponsored toothbrushing. The cadets left the event with a goodie bag each from the sponsors of the Giant Sleep Over.

District Canoeing
On Saturday 31st May some of our cadets took part in the district canoeing at Dinton Pastures, a change of venue at the last moment because of the river conditions. A/C Williams R and A/C Allison came first in the 400mts and second in the 800mts which means that they are representing the district at the area competition. A/C Williams also took part in the competition. So well done to them all. The Team manager for the event was TI Mr Coles.

Oceanography Day
On the 29th May 2008, Four Cadets and two members of staff were among those from Berkshire District to visit the Oceanography Center at Southampton University. A/C Allison, A/C Constance, O/C Hutchins and MC2 Rolfe along with P/Sgt Piller and CPO Greenaway. The cadets and staff were onboard the R V Callista for about three hours during which time the cadets took part in several of the tests that are carried out by the crew, testing and collecting data on the temperature and saltidty of the ocean, checking out the creatures in the sea even the soil and plankton. I think the cadets would agree it was a very enjoyable and informative day.

Mapledurham Camp
Our Annual camp at Mapledurham took place this bank holiday. This year we invited Farnham unit to join us and a good time was had by all in spite of the wet weather. Cadets took part several activities including leadership, campcraft, raft buliding, piping and boating. Five brave cadets along with Lt Milligan rowed the ASC from Reading to Mapledurham and back quite an achievement. Those cadets were A/C Williams C, A/C Williams R, A/C Allison, MC1 Francis and L/C Gearing.
On Sunday evening the cadets and staff tried their hand at Archery and air rifle shooting.

Advancement
We have had four advancements this week. Cadet Abery is now an Ordinary Cadet and Ordinary Cadets Allison and Constance are Able Cadets. PPO Coles has be promoted to PO. WELL DONE EVERYONE!

Sponsors see unit in action
On Monday 12th May 2008 four sponsors came to visit the unit to see the repair work. The 1st Lt, Terry Piller, organised for them to spend the evening meeting the cadets and seeing them at work, asking questions and joining in classes. They were interested in all that the cadets were doing, they were impressed with the band who were practicing outside the unit. They were happy to have their pictures taken with some of the cadets.
Overall a very enjoyable evening.

Staff qualify at Multi Activity Staff Training Weekend
Seven of T.S Jervis Bays staff attended the Area Multi Activity Training Weekend held at Browndown Camp over the weekend of 18th to 20th April 2008.
CPO Greenaway passed the Seamanship course along with PO C. Coles, whilst TI Holland, TI W. Coles, and TI Harper all passed their Level 2 First Aid, and Miss S. Coles and TI Piller both passed their Instructional Methods course.
Although very tired on their return, all enjoyed the weekend very much and will be attending the next MAST weekend in September to gain further qualifications.

High Standards at Southern Area Drill Comp
T.S Jervis Bay's unarmed squad won a well deserved bronze medal at the rescheduled Southern Area Drill & Piping Competition held at MHS Excellent in Portsmouth on Sunday 13th April 2008.
They competed against 8 other unarmed squad from across the Southern Area, putting on an impressive arena display. After having had their unifroms inspected at the islands drill shed.

Area Drill Competition Snowed Off
Due to the heavy snow, the Area Drill Competition was postponed.
The parade ground at HMS Excellent, in Portsmouth, where the competition was due to be held was covered in about 2 inches of snow and unusable.
The whole of Reading also got a fair covering of snow so in commiseration at least the cadets got to hold a snow ball fight!
The Area Competition will be rescheduled as soon as possible

Berkshire District Drill Comp 2008
The units Bluejacket cadets once again marched their way to success on the 9th March 2008.
Whilst dodging the rain showers squad from across Berkshire District took part in the District Drill and Piping Competition held on the main parade square at Brock Barracks.
The Unarmed squad from Reading unit cleared the decks winning the Best Squad, Best Squad Commander & Best Dressed Squad for the 13th Year in row.
Reading Units Marine Cadets were also entered into the District Colour Party Competition on the same day, they were the only Marine Colour Party to enter and also the first ever Marine Colour Party in Berkshire District! they did a fantastic job, coming in 2nd to the colour party which have later turned out to be the national winners.
The 12 cadets and their squad commander will now go on to represent the unit and district at the Southern Area Competition.

A Very Special Visitor
On the evening of the 14th February 2008 the unit had a formal visit from the Vice Admiral Sir Tom Blackburn as part of their Recomissioning. Other official guests in attendance included, the District Officer, Farnham Units Commanding Officer, and Sir Tony Durrant.
The cadet kicked of the evening with a full ceremonial Colours parade with a Guard of Honour. The Guard Commander was AC C. Williams and the parade was led my LC H. Dalton.
After a small break for tea in the Wardroom the Vice Admiral was then escorted around the cadets classrooms where he could see various classes in action and to give him a flavour in what the units cadets get up to on a nightly basis.
This was then followed by a impressive display from the units band and a Evening Colours ceremony at which the Vice Admiral unveiled the recomissioning plaque and addressed the Ships Company.
The Vice Admiral said that "he was very happy to have visited the unit and was impressed with each and every cadet".

Rememberance Parade - 2007
On a typically overcast and chilly November morning the cadets and staff of T.S Jervis Bay paraded along with other cadet services, youth organisations, military personnel and military associations at Brock Barracks to remember those who took part in historys wars.
30 of the units cadets doned their best uniforms and attended the memorial service held at the barracks' cenotaph, the unit also paraded its Standard, which was carried by AC C. Williams and escorted by AC R. Williams and Cdt S. Figuera-Jones.
The service was followed by a march past in column of route around the perimeter of the barracks.
25 of the units staff and cadets then attended the annual Salvation Army service of rememberance at the towns citadel.
