Band Competiton 2008

On 22nd June our band took part in the Novice Band Competition at HMS Excellent in Portsmouth. They came second and were awarded a silver medal each which was presented by Major Henderson. The competition was based on the cadets state of dress, the condtion of the instruments and their performance on the Parade Square. They did an excellent job. The musical director is Mr Peter Border, the Band Master is Sgt J Holland and assistant Band Master is Mr Harper. Our Drum Major is A/C Charlotte Williams. The band have been playing together for about eight months. The band get together to practice once a week on a Wednesday evening.

barracks open day

On Saturday 21st June 2008 Brock Barracks open their gates to the general public. Reading Sea Cadets had stall to show te publicabout Sa Cadets. There was a lot of interest. Our cadets were on hand to show other youngsters some of the things we do, L/C Gearing A/C Allison and A/C Williams R did some piping on the bosuns call, which aroused the intrest of a young man who was shown how to do a few calls.
A/C Allion and A/C Williams also did some ropework. There were several cadets from both Sea Cadets and the Marine Cadets who ook part in the day along with several memebers of staf including PO Coles, Mr Harper and CPO Greenaway.

Tilehurst Show

Reading Sea cadets took part in this years Tilehurst Show.
Sgt Pillar who organised the Sea Cadet taking part in the show orgsnised a raffle to raise funds for the unit.by asking local vendor to kindly donate prizes. The prizes were varied from Bakery to Jewellers. The Sea Cadet Band put on an excellent display, the Marine Detatchement put on a dispaly of a Kazi Vac and a Colour Party Display. We have had a great response from the general public who enjoyed the cadets preformances very much.

Giant sleepover

On 14th June Reading Juniors took part in Guiness Book of Records Giant sleepover. We were able to use Farnham unit for the sleepover. Four of Reading Juniors Jnr Lepetit B, Jnr 1st Class Lepetit C, Jnr Tooser, even N/E Mundy was able to join us as the day was arrange before she came in the senior section. Jnr Harvey-Neven from Farnham unit also joined in the fun. The evening was a fun filled time with lots of games, puzzles, we were even invited to have our evening meal in the officers wardroom. The evening was finished off with a movie. On Sunday morning there was a sponsored toothbrushing. The cadets left the event with a goodie bag each from the sponsors of the Giant Sleep Over.

District Canoeing

On Saturday 31st May some of our cadets took part in the district canoeing at Dinton Pastures, a change of venue at the last moment because of the river conditions. A/C Williams R and A/C Allison came first in the 400mts and second in the 800mts which means that they are representing the district at the area competition. A/C Williams also took part in the competition. So well done to them all. The Team manager for the event was TI Mr Coles.

Oceanography Day

On the 29th May 2008, Four Cadets and two members of staff were among those from Berkshire District to visit the Oceanography Center at Southampton University. A/C Allison,A/C Constance, O/C Hutchins and MC2 Rolfe along with P/Sgt Piller and CPO Greenaway. The cadets and staff were onboard the R V Callista for about three hours during which time the cadets took part in several of the tests that are carried out by the crew, testing and collecting data on the temperature and saltidty of the ocean, checking out the creatures in the sea even the soil and plankton. I think the cadets would agree it was a very enjoyable and informative day.

Mapledurham Camp

Our Annual camp at Mapledurham took place this bank holiday. This year we invited Farnham unit to join us and a good time was had by all in spite of the wet weather. Cadets took part several activities including leadership, campcraft, raft buliding, piping and boating. Five brave cadets along with Lt Milligan rowed the ASC from Reading to Mapledurham and back quite an achievement. Those cadets were A/C Williams C, A/C Williams R, A/C Allison, MC1 Francis and L/C Gearing.

On Sunday evening the cadets and staff tried their hand at Archery and air rifle shooting.

Advancement

We have had four advancements this week. Cadet Abery is now an Ordinary Cadet and Ordinary Cadets Allison and Constance are Able Cadets. PPO Coles has be promoted to PO.

Sponsors see unit in action

On Monday 12th May 2008 four sponsors came to visit the unit to see the repair work. The 1st Lt, Terry Piller, organised for them to spend the evening meeting the cadets and seeing them at work, asking questions and joining in classes. They were interested in all that the cadets were doing, they were impressed with the band who were practicing outside the unit.

They were happy to have their pictures taken with some of the cadets.

Overall a very enjoyable evening.

Staff qualify at Multi Activity Staff Training Weekend

Seven of T.S Jervis Bays staff attended the Area Multi Activity Training Weekend held at Browndown Camp over the weekend of 18th to 20th April 2008.

CPO Greenaway passed the Seamanship course along with PO C. Coles, whilst TI Holland, TI W. Coles, and TI Harper all passed their Level 2 First Aid, and Miss S. Coles and TI Piller both passed their Instructional Methods course.

Although very tired on their return, all enjoyed the weekend very much and will be attending the next MAST weekend in September to gain further qualifications.

High Standards at Southern Area Drill Comp

T.S Jervis Bay's unarmed squad won a well deserved bronze medal at the rescheduled Southern Area Drill & Piping Competition held at MHS Excellent in Portsmouth on Sunday 13th April 2008.

They competed against 8 other unarmed squad from across the Southern Area, putting on an impressive arena display. After having had their unifroms inspected at the islands drill shed.

Area Drill Competition Snowed Off

Due to the heavy snow, the Area Drill Competition was postponed.

The parade ground at HMS Excellent, in Portsmouth, where the competition was due to be held was covered in about 2 inches of snow and unusable.

The whole of Reading also got a fair covering of snow so in commiseration at least the cadets got to hold a snow ball fight!

The Area Competition will be rescheduled as soon as possible

Berkshire District Drill Comp 2008

The units Bluejacket cadets once again marched their way to success on the 9th March 2008.

Whilst dodging the rain showers squad from across Berkshire District took part in the District Drill and Piping Competition held on the main parade square at Brock Barracks.

The Unarmed squad from Reading unit cleared the decks winning the Best Squad, Best Squad Commander & Best Dressed Squad for the 13th Year in row.

Reading Units Marine Cadets were also entered into the District Colour Party Competition on the same day, they were the only Marine Colour Party to enter and also the first ever Marine Colour Party in Berkshire District! they did a fantastic job, coming in 2nd to the colour party which have later turned out to be the national winners.


The 12 cadets and their squad commander will now go on to represent the unit and district at the Southern Area Competition.

A Very Special Visitor

On the evening of the 14th February 2008 the unit had a formal visit from the Vice Admiral Sir Tom Blackburn as part of their Recomissioning. Other official guests in attendance included, the District Officer, Farnham Units Commanding Officer, and Sir Tony Durrant.

The cadet kicked of the evening with a full ceremonial Colours parade with a Guard of Honour. The Guard Commander was AC C. Williams and the parade was led my LC H. Dalton.

After a small break for tea in the Wardroom the Vice Admiral was then escorted around the cadets classrooms where he could see various classes in action and to give him a flavour in what the units cadets get up to on a nightly basis.

This was then followed by a impressive display from the units band and a Evening Colours ceremony at which the Vice Admiral unveiled the recomissioning plaque and addressed the Ships Company.

The Vice Admiral said that "he was very happy to have visited the unit and was impressed with each and every cadet".

Rememberance Parade - 2007

On a typically overcast and chilly November morning the cadets and staff of T.S Jervis Bay paraded along with other cadet services, youth organisations, military personnel and military associations at Brock Barracks to remember those who took part in historys wars.

30 of the units cadets doned their best uniforms and attended the memorial service held at the barracks' cenotaph, the unit also paraded its Standard, which was carried by AC C. Williams and escorted by AC R. Williams and Cdt S. Figuera-Jones.

The service was followed by a march past in column of route around the perimeter of the barracks.

25 of the units staff and cadets then attended the annual Salvation Army service of rememberance at the towns citadel.
