BURGEE LEVEL

We have maintained our high levels of attitude and discipline from last year and have managed to gained our second successive Burgee. For those who have forgotten last year we gained our first Burgee in 20 years, now this is the first time we have ever gained to in succession. For those who don't know a Burgee is the highest level any cadet unit can, be as you need to gain over 70 percent in the annual inspection which is difficult to say beyond the least. So a massive well done to all the staff and cadets who have contributed to this tremendous level.

REMEMBRANCE PARADE

Once again we had a grand turn out from the cadets of Padstow to remember those lost before and during there lives. As always, we had our guard on the memorial to show the public of Padstow, that the cadets want to show their full respect to those who have laid down their lives to give us what we have today. without the cadets wanting to stand, in prevailing winds with the possibility of rain at any moment, just to show their thanks to those who have faught and died in battle, i believe that Padstow remembrance would be very solemn. so i thank those cadets who try there hardest every year to get into the guard as it really is an honour for any cadet to parade on the memorial.

M.A.S.T. WEEKEND

A M.A.S.T. weekend is the new name for the south west area weekend courses and on the last course to be held between the 30th Oct - 1st Nov, we had six members attend. Three where our senior Able Cadets trying for there Leading Cadet advancement, however they were not successful this time around, but better luck next time lads.

We also had three members of staff attending there basic drill course. All three passed and were recommended to go further with there new qualifications. Well done to those three staff members on achieving more qualifications.

TRAFALGER PARADE

Towards the end of every year, Cornwall sea cadets gather at Penzance SCC unit for the training of the guard and colour party. Then on the Sunday of the same weekend we jump on a coach and go to a little village outside of Penzance called Madron. We then fall in, waiting for the Royal Navy to join us. The guard is made up of to smaller guards, which each contain 12 cadets with an overall total of 24 cadets in the whole guard. We then have the colour party which is made up of 4 people, 2 cadets and 2 staff. Then there is the squad made up of the cadets who didn't make it into the guard and some spares from Penzance who turn up to fill up the squad.

we took 7 cadets for the guard this year and they were all paraded in the guard. Those cadets being;

ABLE CADET THOMAS CHEETHAM
ABLE CADET GEORGE RICHARDSON
ABLE CADET JACK GLAVES
ABLE CADET JOSH WRIGHT
ORDINARY CADET OLIVIA RICHARDSON
ORDINARY CADET SIOBHAN CONNEL
CADET ASHLEY WILLIS
So a big well done to those 7 cadets who took part and congratulations on another better turn out than the Royal Navy.

Swimming Competition

We had a handful of cadets enter the district swimming competition this year, however only one made it to area swimming. At area swimming Ordinary Cadet Olivia Richardson came second to gain a silver medal. Well done Olivia keep up the good work and keep training.

STAFF PROMOTION

After finally doing his week long sqcits course, P.P.O. PAUL RICHARDSON can be promoted into a full PETTY OFFICER. Well done P.O. RICHARDSON and thank you for your dedication to the cadets of Padstow unit.

District Seamanship Competition

Although we did not win this year we all still walked away with our heads held high and smiling. The team worked well together despite the lack of time to train. They showed good knowledge of there abilities and put in 110 percent at each stage. There for we congratulate them on there efforts and the image that they have put forward for our unit. Well done to;
Able Cadet Thomas Cheetham
Able Cadet George Richardson
Able Cadet Jack Glaves
Ordinary Cadet Olivia Richardson
Ordinary Cadet Aaron Lindsey
Cadet Callum Briggs.
And to the three members staff who trained them and was there on the day.

NATIONAL REGATTA

The junior boys did well in London at the National combined Regatta this year. They narrowly missed being in the top three. The team had come on leaps and bounds over the past year with two new additions to there team. They bonded well and worked brilliantly together as a team.
The team consists of;
O/C Jack Glaves - COXSWAIN
O/C Josh Wright - STROKE
CDT Ashley Willis -3
A/C Thomas Cheetham - 2
A/C Stanleigh Jones - BOWMAN
O/C Aaron Russell – RESERVE
They’re spirit for the sport really showed on the day as they pushed the top three teams all the way to the line. Unfortunately due to there ages they will all be in the next level in the Regatta, in the open stage, which if they chose to continue will be a hard slog for them, having to pull an extra 200 metres.
Well done lads for all the effort you applied to your sport this year and I hope to see you continue and improve furthermore.

WEEKEND OF FUN

Over the last weekend, 7th - 10th August, a number of cadets and staff have spent a action packed weekend, despite 1 or 2 coming down ill, exploring the natural joys in and around the Camel estuary. They took part in camp craft activities followed by a walk around the countryside that contains St Minver, they also went for a little under water fun, where every one went snorkelling. All this was made possible by the joys of boating , they sailed, pulled and powered up and down the river between there action stations. The cadets were also pleased to give up a couple of hours of there free time to enter Padstow and take a special role in the service. All in all, the staff and cadets all enjoyed there weekends excursions around the river Camel.

CULDROSE AIR DAY

Padstow sea cadets are going to Culdrose air day on Wednesday 29 July. Up there we will be taking part in displays and raising money. So if any one out there would like to support the sea cadets, come and visit our stalls on the day.

South West Area Display Team

10 of our cadets travelled up to H.M.S. Raleigh to learn the drills of the new riffles, that the sea cadets will soon be issued with. They had to learn the new drills, and learn them well, as they were the main display for this years Royal Navy Open day within HMS Raliegh, that happened on Thursday 23 July. The whole week was a success and we congratulate those 10 cadets who tried and did there best over the week. Well done.

Area Regatta

The Padstow boys won at area again this year, in the junior boys competition, the only competition coming from west Wales. So the junior boys are going for there second trip in two years to London, to take part in the national Regatta held at the excel centre from Friday 21 to Sunday 23 August. Well done lads you have what it takes to win at nationals. Good luck.

District Regatta

District regatta was once again a success for Padstow, with our reigning area champions, junior boys, going straight through to the area competition again 17 - 19 July. Well done lads now let’s crush our area opponents again.

Junior Leaders Field Gun Run

One of our new members of staff has recently come back, after taking part in the Junior Leaders Field Gun Run, held at H.M.S. COLLINGWOOD in Portsmouth. He was sent a Six week training program six weeks before the beginning of the competition so as to gain the right amount of fitness required to take part in the most demanding, physical competition in the world. The member of staff, newly promoted P.P.O. BEN CHEETHAM, completed the six weeks training to the highest standard, and achieved great success during the competition, despite falling over during the first race; they never came last and only incurred two penalties. For this we congratulate the first ever SEA CADET AND MARINE SOCIETY Junior Leaders Field Gun team for there valiant efforts in the competition despite coming 7th. Well done guys and girls.

NAVY NEWS

Our Apologies

Unfortunately due to a slight shortage of staff and events, we have not done much over the past few weeks. We are always looking for new volunteers to join our unit, to aid in training the cadets and to learn new things, themselves, along the way.

BOATING STATION OPENS FOR BUSSINESS

On Friday the 27th, 8 cadets and 3 members of staff from the Padstow sea cadets, travelled to the Cornwall District boatstation at st Austell unit for a district boating course. They were split up, upon arrival and took part in 3 different courses held over the weekend. Pulling, pulling instructor and power. All of the cadets and staff present agreed that they enjoyed the weekend. Padstow would like to thank LT CDR Truscott for the weekend as he ran it very successfully and LT Walker for the catering for the staff and cadets over the weekend as it is no mean feat. Finally, we would like to thank the 5 instructors; LT CDR Truscott for the pulling instructors, PO Drury for the power and CPO James, CPO Truscott and PO Truscott for the pulling crews, For taking the time out of there busy schedules for training the staff and cadets. Padstow says thank you to all involved for their efforts.

On Monday 30th, Padstow sea cadets hit to the waters of Padstow, for their first boating night of the season. There next session will be the 10th of April training the junior boys pulling crew ready for the regatta in June. Remember there is an open boys and open girls team to get into so keep pulling and you could find yourselves at area and nationals just like the junior boys.

THE NEW SEASON

A new year brings in the new boating season that starts on Saturday 8th of March. We will be immediately starting to train our pulling teams that we wish to enter into the District regatta. We hope to be fielding 3 teams this year. 1 girl and 2 boys (1 junior and 1 open team), this good news is all down to the numbers that we have within the unit capable of pulling. Our raining area champions, that are the junior boy’s team, will be made up of roughly the same members as last year with the empty slots being tried out for. The open boys are up for the try outs with the best team possible being fielded. It will be a long season full of training aiming to win nationals. All the best to the cadets that get chosen and remember the more teams that get chosen from Padstow to attend area, the higher the standards are for the rest of the district.

Distrist Drill

This years district drill competition was not brilliant for Padstow. However we still came away from the weekend, 13th-15th Febuary, with our heads held high and with the bigest prize following. Padstow sea cadets were named the best unit in Cornwall. There was also 1 reward for a cadet within are ranks. Now, Ordinary Cadet Aaron Lindsey being named best dressed piper. Well done Aaron for dressing correctly and a massive well done for the Colour Party who each did there best. Finally i'd like to thank P.O. Mark Cheetham for training the colour party. Were going on the water very soon to begin are training for the district Regatta where we hope to feild 3 teams. Good luck Cadets.

A NEW YEAR

After an immense year of work from both the staff and the cadets during 2008, we aim to gain further status within the corps as a unit to watch for, in competitions and level of qualification.

We started the year with the awards ceremony where both cadets and staff were winning big. We are about to enter our colour party and pipers into the district drill and piping competition where Padstow colour party are defending their title as the district champions. We have two pipers going forward one of whom has not long joined us and is gaining speed fast.

We have swelled in numbers since being presented with our burgee last September and the numbers of senior cadets has increased within the unit as there have been 7 promotions since the start of the New Year.

Well done to the staff and cadets of Padstow for last year’s work and let’s hope that it continues in the forthcoming year. Thank you for showing your support to Padstow Sea cadets, by logging on to read what we’ve been doing.
