What's it all about?
We welcome young people aged 10 to 18 years regardless of race, gender, colour, sex or religion including those with Special Needs within the bounds of safety to themselves and others. Our aim is to help young people develop a sense of responsible adulthood, using a nautical theme based on the customs and traditions of the Royal Navy, giving them self-confidence, self-discipline and respect for themselves, others and their community, encouraging them to achieve their maximum potential.
Parade nights are Monday and Wednesday evenings from 1915 - 2130 (7.15pm - 9.20pm) at the Unit Headquarters.
We are a voluntary, uniformed, national, youth organisation that relies on charitable donations (Staff are not paid unless they have to go away from home on courses and even then there are restrictions).
Each unit is inspected and assessed annually by the Royal Navy to ensure that the high standards are maintained. We are able to train young people in Seamanship, Marine Engineering, First Aid, Cooking, Stewarding, Meteorology, Chartwork and Navigation. We also provide sporting activities, such as: 5-a-side Football, Sailing, Shooting, Swimming, Kayaking, Pulling (rowing), Power Boating and Field Gun competitions. Many of these activities can lead to nationally recognized qualifications. We also run a number of ceremonial competitions, such as drill, guard and piping. The Sea Cadet Corps are also signed up to the pre-service BTEC qualification, which is equivalent to four GCSE level passes from A-C grade. (If the school can prove they have supported this course they can also claim accreditation from it). The Corps provides courses in naval shore establishments (across the UK from Scotland to Cornwall) and opportunities to visit warships at sea. The corps owns and operates several offshore training vessels including the brig T.S. Royalist, T.S. City Liveryman and the offshore motor vessel T.S. John Jerwood.
The Medway Towns unit is part of the West Kent district of the Southern Area. We are one of nine units that make up West Kent, the others being: Chatham Marine Cadets, Dartford, Gravesend, Maidstone, (the Isle of) Sheppey, Sittingbourne (and Milton Regis), Tunbridge Wells and Westerham.
