What's it all about?

Some of the team

The Medway Towns Sea Cadet Corps are a Registered Educational Youth Charity (charity number 302712). We are also affiliated to the Sea Cadet Association, and the international Sea Cadet Association. Our Parent Governing body is the Sea Cadet Council (registered address: 202 Lambeth Road, London, SE1 7JF). We are also accountable to the Charity Commission of England.
We are open to young people aged 10 to 18 years regardless of race, gender, colour, sex or religion (taking into account their pastoral and dietary needs), and within the bounds of safety to themselves and others, those with Special Needs.
Our aim is to help young people develop a sense of responsible adulthood, using a nautical theme based on the customs and traditions of the Royal Navy, giving them self-confidence, self discipline and respect for themselves, others and their community, encouraging them to achieve their maximum potential.
Parade nights are Monday and Wednesday evenings from 19.30 till 21.30, at the Unit Headquarters, also we have our own dedicated Boat Station on the river Medway at Lower Upnor where we carry out Waterbourne activities.
We are not a recruiting arm for the Royal Navy or any other service organisation, although about 25% of our Cadets nationally do go on to join the services, including the Police, Fire Service, and armed forces etc.
We are a voluntary, uniformed, national, youth organisation that relies on charitable donations. (Staff are not paid unless they have to go away from home on courses and even then there are restrictions). Staff are fully trained at District, Area and National levels for general and specialist qualifications, such as: Seamanship, Boat-work and Boat Handling, Marine Engineering (Electrical & Mechanical), Physical Training, First Aid, Cooking, Stewarding, Communications (i.e. Morse code and radio operating), Stores Accounting and Writing (no, not the joined up stuff - naval and formal correspondence).
Each unit is inspected and assessed annually by the Royal Navy to ensure that the high standards are kept up. We also provide other sporting activities, such as: Cross Country Running, Volleyball, 5-a-side Football, Sailing, Shooting, Swimming, Canoeing, Pulling (rowing), Athletics, Field Gun competitions and Power Boating. Many of these activities can lead to nationally recognized qualifications. We also run a number of ceremonial competitions, such as drill & guard and piping.
The Sea Cadet Corps are also signed up to the pre service BTEC qualification, which is equivalent to four GCSE level passes from A-C grade. (If the school can prove they have supported this course they can also claim accreditation from it).
The Corps provides courses in naval shore establishments (across the UK from Scotland to Cornawll) and opportunities to visit warships at sea. The corps owns and operates several offshore training vessels including the brig T.S. Royalist. T,S Leopold Muller, T.S. Liveryman and the offshore motor vessel T.S. John Jerwood. The Medway Towns unit is part of the West Kent district of the Southern Area. We are one of eight units that make up West Kent, the others being: Chatham Marine Cadets, Dartford, Gravesend, Maidstone, (the Isle of) Sheppey, Sittingbourne (and Milton Regis) and Tunbridge Wells.

The Field Gun

Action Rear

Medway Towns Sea Cadets are have a long proud history of competing in the Field Gun Competition, carrying on an old Naval tradition dating back to the turn of the Twentieth Century.
We give demonstrations and compete all over Kent and the Guns have appeared at the International Festival of the Sea at Portsmouth last year 2005 as well as at Trafalgar Square in London as part of the Trafalgar 200 Celebrations.
This year we are booked to appear at the Medway Maritime Festival at the Historic Dockyard Chatham on May Bank Holiday weekend.
Also we shall be appearing at the Detling Steam Rally in August.
The Field Gun is an excellent tool for encouraging team work, self discipline and self confidence. The Cadets are selected from the 13 to 17 years range and must earn the right to be become a member of the team.
They practice regularly to ensure a high standard of performance which is required to compete in what is a very taxing event.
