JUNIORS BOATING WEEKEND AT THRAPSTSON: 18TH - 20TH JUNE

Three of the units Junior Cadets are off to SCTC Trapston for another boating weekend. They will be doing a variety of activities on the water from sailing to power boating.

JUNIORS CADETS SUCCESS AT THE 2010 BOATING REGATTA

What an excellent result. The junior boy’s boat handling came first and the girls double kayak race came 4th out of 11 units. This was a great success for the cadets and the unit. All the staff and cadets are very proud of their efforts. The unit would also like to thank the cadets who came for support, even though they did not compete. Hopefully next year we can enter more events.

WINDSURFING AT THRAPSTON: 28th -30th MAY

Three cadets have just achieved their stage one windsurfing certificate at Thrapston over the bank holiday weekend. Some more cadets will be attending another course in July. It is the first time any of them have tried windsurfing and they have said it was definitely worth trying and would do it again.

STAFF GAIN MORE QUALIFICATIONS

The staff of the unit have had a busy week away on courses. PPO Paddy Garner has been in scotland on his Petty Officers's qualifiying course and has been promoted. He is now entitled to wear the crown on his badges and has been promoted to Petty Officer.

PPO Brown and PO Garner have passed the core seamanship course and are now qualified to teach it within the unit.

PPO Jelley, Mr Abbott and Mr Lowbridge have also attended the adult induction course.
A big well done to all staff.

FIRST CADET TO ACHIEVE A SAILING QUALIFICATION

Junior Cadet Kemp has just achieved his Stage 1 dingy sailing qualification. A big well done to JNR Kemp as he is the first cadet to achieve a sailing qualification within the unit for quite a few years. Hopefully more cadets will take up the sport of sailing.

UNIT WEEKEND TO WEYMOUTH: 30th APRIL - 2nd MAY

The unit will be heading down to the newly built Sea Cadets Training Centre for a weekend of power boating. This was the first time for many of the cadets to practice power boating skills on tidal waters. Able Cadet Thomas Mann also achieved his RYA Level 2 displacement certificate. Thomas is the first cadet to achieve his level 2 displacement and planning certificate.

ADVENTURE WEEKEND: 2ND-4TH OF APRIL (EASTER WEEKED)

Cadets and staff had just come back from an adventure weekend in Cornwall. Cadets and staff did a variety of activities such as boarding and coastal traversing.

UNIT POWER BOATING WEEKEND TO TS PALATINE: 26TH-28TH MARCH

13 Cadets and staff have travelled to Rochdale (TS Palatine) for another power boating weekend. This has become a firm favourite amongst the cadets.

A BIG WELL DONE to all the cadets and staff who achived qualifictions. Those that didnt have had sections of their log book signed off and hours logged which will go towards their next qualifiction.

A HUGE WELL DONE goes to CI Jelley who passed his RYA Safety Boat Certificate. It is a qualifcation that requires lots of hard work and exceptional driving skills.

Poppy Appeal 2009 Presentation evening March 2010

Phil, Daniel, Nick and Oban were recognised for their outstanding efforts during the 2009 annual Poppy Appeal at a presentation evening. The cadets met The Lord Lieutenant of Warwickshire Martin Dunne and the Mayor and Mayoress of Nuneaton & Bedworth Councillors Tom and Sonja Wilson. The County Chairman, Philip Wilson said: "This year 22 cadet units from the Air Training Corps, Army Cadet Force, Sea Cadets and Youth Fire Service took part in the Warwickshire County collection.It's so pleasing to see that the youth of today are doing their bit to help those who risked their lives in the service of their country. The Poppy Appeal is as relevant today as it was over 80 years ago when it started and the cold facts are that ex-servicemen, women and their dependants who commit their lives to the service of this country deserve all the help we can give them."

FREE SWIMMING FOR ALL CADETS AGED 16 YEARS AND UNDER

The unit regulalry goes swimming at least once a month, so in order to reduce costs cadets can obtain a pass which entitles them to free swimming until March 2011 for a one off charge off £2. Cadets will need to complete an application form and hand it into the front desk of the leisure centre. ROYAL MARINES VISABILITY TEAM PAY A VISIT TO THE UNIT

On Thursday the 11th the unit was payed a visit by the Royal Marines Visability Team. The marines where called Tim and Taff and they came to talk to the cadets about their experiences in the marines. They also explained how long it took for them to earn the prestigious Green Beret. Cadets and adults had plenty of questions answered and many entertaining yarns where told. Im sure everyone had a great night. A big thank you goes out to the Tim and Taff (The Marines) and to the committee for organsing the evening.

CADETS GAIN YOUTH NATIONAL NAVIGATIONAL AWARD

7 Cadets have just gained the Bronze National Navigation Award. Cadets where taught basic navigational skills and got the chance to put them into practice on an orienteering course in the local park. 2010 cadets will be aiming to get the silver award and will be traveling futher afield to build upon their skills.

UNIT POWER BOATING WEEKEND: 9th - 11th of OCTOBER

Cadets and Staff had a great weekend power boating. 3 more cadets gained their Level 1 power boating certificate. A great time was had by all.

Well done to Cadets Pilkington and Fellows for achieving their RYA Level 1 power boating certificate.

Well done to CI Jelley who has just become BCU Level 1 coaches.



All the courses where completed at the Leam Boat Centre.

KENILWORTH CARNIVAL: 4TH JULY

The unit entered a float into the 2009 Kenilworth Carnival. The weather and the atmosphere was great. Everyone had a great day and we look forward entering next year. Thanks to everyone that turned up and helped.

UNITS FIRST EVER CADETS EVER QUALIFIED DIVING

For the first time in unit history 3 cadets and 1 member off staff have just come back from a diving course. They have all achieved the "OCEAN DIVER" award which is a qualification awarded by the Bristish Sub Aqua Club. The course consisted of pool work and then practicing their skills in the waters of Liverpool. It is a huge achievement for these cadets. Hopefully we will continue to send the cadets away on diving courses.

JUNIORS GO SNORKELING

On May 2009, 4 juniors attended a national snorkeling course at TS Liverpool.

The course invloves some theory lessons and a session in the pool learning and practicing snorkeling skills. All the juniors achieved their Basic Snorkel Divers Award from the British Sub Aqua Club. Well done to every one who passed.

UNIT HERITAGE WEEKEND: 1ST-3RD MAY 2009

The unit has just had a great weekend trip down to Portmouth. We stayed on board a real warship call HMS Bristol. We also visited HMS Victory, The Royal Naval Museum, Action Stations and The Royal Marines Museum.

STAFF ATTEND THE ROYAL NAVYS FIRST AID COURSE AT HMS RALEIGH

CI Paddy Garner has just returned from a week’s first aid course at HMS Raleigh. He successfully achieved "The First Aid at Work" and RN Level 2 certificates. 4 days was spent learning life saving skills which concluded with live exercises on the 5th day. The exercises where based on real incidents that have occurred in the navy. One of the scenarios was dealing with casualties of a helicopter crash. All staff and cadets over the age of 16 may attend this course. The course cost £60 and the qualifications earned can be used outside of the corps.

UNIT WINS TROPHY FOR RAISING FUNDS FOR THE POPPEY APPEAL

Every year the cadets and staff sell poppies in Sainsburys for 8 hours in order to raise funds for the British Legion Poppey Appeal. The unit raised the second highest amount of money out of all of the army, air and sea cadet units in Warwickshire.
