What It Costs and Other Info
Although it costs in the region of £10,000 per year to run the unit cadets are only asked for £5 per month towards this. The remainder of the cost is covered by donations and fundraising.
Cadet uniforms (best and working) are provided by the unit, cadets are expected to take care of them and will have to pay for any lost items. Junior Cadet uniform is sometimes available from the unit (we have limited numbers) if not available the cost is less than £20.
Events run by the unit will sometimes involve a small charge towards food, Area and National events often have no charge. Area and National courses can range from £10 to £200 depending what, where and how long, some of the more expensive courses for example a trip on the TS Royalist (square rigger sailing ship) can often be subsidised.
All staff are qualified in the subjects/events that they teach and safety rules adhered to. All staff are also vetted prior to becoming instructors with a full disclosure CRB check and by the taking up of references.

Competitions
Competitions are held across the District and Area culminating in National competitions for the winning teams or cadets. This does give another opportunity for cadets to get away for the weekend.
The competitions that take place each year include :- Pulling Kayaking Five a side football Drill Piping Expedition Training Swimming Sailing
Such events are a great opportunity for cadets to meet other cadets from across the district area or country. The biggest cheers normally go to the cadets that are maybe not the best at an event but give it their all.

Other Opportunities
Over the years many varied opportunities arise that cadets can take advantage of if they wish to get the most out of cadets.
Three cadets travelled to Bermuda on 15th July 2009 on an experience of a life time. This is an ongoing exchange with a visit from Bermuda expected next year.
Bermudian Sea Cadet .
We have also had cadets visit Hong Kong, spend days at sea with the Royal Navy, attend garden parties at Sandringham and much more.
Over the last six years cadets have had the opportunity to meet Prince Charles, Prince Andrew, Prince Philip and The Queen.
Cadets only tend to be limited in opportunities by what time and effort they are prepared to put in.
