Stephenson Trophy

Its official! It has just been announced that TS Jersey has won this years Stephenson Trophy, being nominated as the best Sea Cadet Unit in Southern Area for 2009, that's over 70 units.

Our Commanding Officer, Lt Rob Davison was nearly lost for words when he announced it, and all the Staff and Cadets are very proud to have received the award.

TS Jersey last won the Stevenson Trophy in 1997 and this is the 14th time that Jersey Unit has won this award.

Commodore Jamie Miller RN

On Sunday, 6th December, Commodore Jamie Miller RN made an informal visit to TS Jersey. Its not every day we are privileged to have a visit from such a high ranking serving Royal Naval Officer. The Cadets were thrilled to hear about his distinguished career at sea, especially about his exploits in the Falklands War and being sunk twice! He made a tour of the classes whilst the cadets were under training, and said he was impressed with what he saw. Commodore Miller was in Jersey, in his capacity of Naval Regional Commander Wales & Western England, to discuss next years Jersey boat show, and the Royal Navy's involvement, which includes several Navy ships, and various activities that TS Jersey will be involved with. Looks like its going to be a good boat show for 2010.

Visit by Southern Area Commander Andy Giles RN

Last Wednesday, we had a surprise visit by our Area Officer, Commander Andy Giles RN. He was just keeping us on our toe's, making sure we were doing the right things!
He had a tour of the ship and managed to chat to some of the cadets and staff and was also able to keep us up to date with the happenings in Southern Area. He will be visiting TS Jersey again in April 2010 for our bi-annual inspection where he checks that all our records are up to date and the Cadets are inspected and also put on several displays of skills and theatrical performances. Always a lot of fun. He was also able to announce that our Marine Cadet Detachment have been nominated again, to represent Southern Area at the Commando Training Centre to defend the Gibraltar Cup, which they are current holders of, for 2010.

HMS WALNEY visit to Jersey

A few cadets and staff had the opportunity to have a tour on board HMS Walney, a Sandown Class mine hunter, whilst it was on a visit to Jersey. The cadets really enjoyed the trip, and a big thank you to her crew for showing us around, and we look forward to her visit next year during the boat show.

REMEMBRANCE DAY 2009

On Sunday, November 8th the Unit participated in the annual Remembrance Parade held at the Cenptaph in the Parade. There was another excellent turnout by the cadets of TS Jersey who were a credit to the Unit and all looked very smart. Luckily the rain held off until after the parade.

Duke of Edinburgh Award success 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009

For the forth year in a row TS Jersey have been awarded the Southern Area Trophy for Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. This is due to the hard work and effort by our D of E co-ordinators, Chief Petty Officer Colin Duckworth, and his wife, Petty Officer Tina Duckworth, and of course, the cadets who worked for their qualification.
This year we have 42 cadets enrolled through the Duke of Edinburgh scheme with 22 doing their Bronze, 12 doing their Silver, and 8 planning for their Gold. This is indeed a large group and all are determined to progress.
The D of E group meet on a Monday evening at the unit, and if you require any information about the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme within TS Jersey, please contact CPO Colin Duckworth.

If you are able or know of anyone who is able to assist with their training also please contact CPO Duckworth.

On completion, a BTEC 1st Diploma is equivalent to 4 GCSE's { grade A*-C }.
Last year we had 9 cadets and staff register, 3 having already completed with a distinction pass, and the remaining 6 have until August 2010 to complete.

Trafalgar day Parade.

On Sunday, 18th October, the Unit gathered at St. Peters Church for the Trafalgar Day Parade. St Peters Church is the home of our Unit Padre, the Rev Martin Poolton. We had a fantastic turnout with 77 Cadets on parade in their best uniform and after the service the Unit conducted a march past in front of Parish dignitaries.

Cadet Petty Officer Conrad Duckworth

Conrad has now left TS Jersey having reached 18 years of age. He was the last of the three Duckworth children to have been in the unit.
During his time in the unit, Conrad had amassed over 180 points in his part 2 training, gained his Duke of Edinburgh silver award, Grade 2 tall ship sailing, RYA stage 4 sailing, power boat level 2 planing and displacement qualification, and his senior Coxswain's badge. He also got a distinction in his Cadet BTEC course.
Recently he has had a busy time with various trips off Island. He took part in the Junior leaders field gun competition at HMS Collingwood, was selected for this years International cadet exchange to Russia in which he mixed with cadets from the USA, Sweden, Canada, UK and Russia and he also attended the Frimley Park cadet leadership course. Not satisfied with that, he also was a crew member in the tall ships race from Bergen to Den Helder aboard TS Royalist in monstrous sea's.
Conrad is currently on an Outward bound instructors course at Kellys College, Devon. We wish him well and look forward to his return, a wiser man!

WW2 German Bunker

TS Jersey has been lucky enough to have the use of a WW2 German 10.5cm gun emplacement as their new sailing store at St Aubin's Fort. A visiting TA unit recently visited the Island and assisted with building the shelving storage for the boats equipment and they also completely re-wired all the electrical fittings, and we are now just waiting to be connected to the local electrical supply. The TA did a fantastic job.

New Rib for TS Jersey

This year, TS Jersey has been assisted by the Association of Jersey Charities to enable the purchase of a new RIB. It is an XS RIB, 5.5 metre with a Suzuki 90HP outboard motor. It has been put to good use this summer supporting our sailing weekends and with cadet/staff power boat training. It certainly is a fantastic addition to our growing fleet.

We also, this year were able to purchase 8 new Pico Sailing Dinghies, (as well as having use of another 5) to complement our fleet which includes 4 bosuns and a Laser 3000. The Unit is hoping to aquire 2 or 3 Laser Radials over the winter period.

The CO gets to have a go!

2009 Sailing Regatta

At the start line

Our annual inter divisional Sailing Regatta took place on Saturday 5th of September. It turned out to be a lovely sunny day with a good 2/3 force wind. We had 9 cadets racing in our new Laser Pico's, and the competition was exciting. Top spot went to Jenny Taylor with 3 wins, with her brother Richard a close second, also with 2 wins, and Josh Playford with a 3rd with 1 win. Port watch were the overall winners for the 2009 sailing regatta. Better luck next year for Starboard and the Marines!

60th Anniversary

In June this year TS Jersey celebtates its 60th Anniversary. On Friday, 26th June there was a Vin D'Honeur held at the local Maritime Museum in which 120 guets were invited. The cadets put on a Drill and Hornpipe display and a good night was enjoyed by all.

Gibraltar Cup

Gibraltar Cup Team

Over the weekend 6-8 March, our Marine Cadet Detachment represented Southern Area for the annual Gibraltar Cup Competition at the RMCTC, Lympstone. After a tough three days assesment the Jersey Unit came out on top and therefore are the current holders of the Gibraltar Cup. Congratulations to the Detachment Commander, Lt (SCC) Myles Le Basse and his team who put in an enormous amount of work preparing the cadets for this ardous event.

Also many congratulations to the all the cadets who put in an enormous amount of effort in preparing for the competition; unfortunately only 8 cadets can be selected but well done to the winning team.

Last year they were also the Area representatives and came a creditable 3rd place.

Pictured are the lucky 8 cadets who were selected for the 2009 team.

Over the weekend 5-7 March, 2010 our Detachment are again representing Southern Area in the Gibraltar Cup at the RMCTC, Lympstone; we all wish them all the best of luck.
