Unt Training Officer Attends Weekend of Meeting
The unit training officer Sgt (SCC) P Chapman attended the annual Southern Area Conference at HMS COLLINGWOOD on 6th February. The conference is designed to inform all commanding officers and senior staff and unit chairpersons of the latest developments within the sea cadets and to also talk about the future plans, it also provides them with a chance to question the headquarters team which included the Captain of the Sea Cadet Corps, Captain Mark Windsor, Royal Navy and the Southern Area Officer, Commander Andy Giles, Royal Navy. It was a good opportunity to meet with others from around the district and area. The weekend did not stop there as Sgt Chapman went to the other side of Portsmouth and to the annual “Zulu Company” Marine Cadet Conference hosted at HMS NELSON by Major (SCC) G Guppy RMR – Company Commander.

Horsham Big Day Out
Well done to All Staff and NE Chapman for turning out and assisting at Horsham Carnival. It was a successful day, with money being raised for the unit and recruiting potential cadets. The weather stayed mainly dry for the event, unlike last year, which made the day worth while and enjoyable for all.

District BTEC Officer Appointed
S/Lt (SCC) Simon Tudor RNR from Camberley Unit has agreed to take over the role of District Staff Officer BTEC from Lt Allison Anderson RNR who has stood down as she is shortly going on maternity leave.
Simon has done a great job at Camberley with BTEC and has some excellent ideas to move this under utilised award forward in Surrey District. Simon will be sending out information very soon which will hopefully enable units to get their 16 year old cadets and above enrolled on this valuable award which is absolutely free and is equivalent to 4 GCSEs at Grades A-C. CVQO also offer awards for adults so please take a look at their website to see what is on offer. http://www.cvqo.org/dnn/
If there are any budding Engineers or Musicians they can take a BTEC in Music or Engineering as well. Anyone interested in doing BTEC should speak to Sgt(SCC) P Chapman.

HMS BRISTOL - D23
HMS Bristol is the latest in a succession of warships to be employed as the Royal Navy, Royal Naval Reserve, National Cadet Forces (NCF) and Youth Organisations Harbour Training and Accommodation Ship.
Permanently berthed at Whale Island, the Ship remains in commission, has an RN Commanding Officer and is administered as a Department of HMS Excellent.
With a small complement of serving and civilian personnel, Bristol operates for 50 weeks of the year providing a range of training and accommodation for a variety of personnel.
A Type 82 Destroyer of 7000 tons, and the seventh ship to bear the name, Bristol was laid down as the first of her class, designed to escort the replacement fixed-wing carriers (CVAS) planned in the 60's, she was the only one built after the carriers were cancelled. Commissioned in 1973, she was finally withdrawn from service in 1991 and configured for her current role in 1993.
Currently one third of her compartments are used for accommodation, providing 460 berths for the fourteen thousand young people who pass through her every year. For many the ship is their first experience of the RN, and provides a lasting impression, one that will shape the lives of some. Exchange programmes using Bristol have included cadets from Canada, Bermuda, Holland, Hong Kong, India, Malta, the Falklands, South Africa, and the USA.
Horsham cadets attend the district camps and area boating courses on the ship

Royal Naval Parade
It was all hands on deck last night (25th June) for the unit's Royal Naval Parade which was carried out in front of a large crowd of parents and supporters by the Southern Area Officer, Commander Andy Giles Royal Navy.
The night started with a formal inspection of all the cadets and this was followed by evolutions. The junior section put on a display on how the Naval uniform started linking the days of Nelson and today, complete with a cat walk!!!
It was then the senior sections turn, and they showed evryone how the SCC had developed since 1854 (with a few interpretations of their own). They told how girls first came into the cadets and how in 1955 the marine cadets got started with the aid of Mrs Commandant General Royal Marines (CGRM's Mum). The Surprise evolution was a knot race and for this the cadets got members of the crowd to take part, this included four who were cadets with the CO(a long time ago).
The night ended with Presentations of some awards including the best cadet of the year and both the Horsham Rotary Club and HMS GLORY Association presented cheques to the unit. The unit was also joined on the night by Headteachers and members of the parish and district councils.
Photos to follow.
