The Present HMS Atherstone is the third to bear the name and was built at Southampton in 1986 and entered service in 1987. The first was a 810 ton paddle minesweeper built in 1916 which served in the Firth of Forth area until 1918 when she was moved to the Humber. She was paid off in August 1924.

She joined the Orkneys and Shetland Command in Scapa Flow at the end of April 1940 and escorted convoys between the Orkneys and the Clyde. In mid August the Amerston was ordered to join the first Destroyer Flotilla at Portsmouth and on 11th September 1940 while off Ramsgate with a convoy, whe was bombed and severely damaged.

Repaired at Chatham, the Atherstone returned to coastal convoy escort duties in January 1941. She had varied duties and then a refit in Jan 1943 then she was allocated to the Mediterranean Fleet where she remained until the end of the war.
