We have tried to answer some questions you might have here. If you have an un-answered question please e-mail us.
Can boys and girls join the Sea Cadets?
Yes, both young men and women can join the Sea Cadets. About half of our cadets at Guildford are female. We also have appropriate female and male staff coverage in order to be able to fully support full inclusion in unit nights, activities, courses and competitions for both girls and boys.
How old do I have to be to join?
If you are over 10 years of age then this is your lucky day...you can joing! If you are aged between 10 and 17 then you can join as a cadet. We also always need more qualified, willing and able instructors. So, if you are 18 or over then please come see us and let us know how you can help.
Most units have both a junior section and a senior section. We are no exception and Guildford has a large and active junior group of cadets aged between 10 and 12. We also have a very enthusiastic group of senior cadets aged between 12 and 17.
How much does it cost?
We require a one off payment of £35 for uniform which covers replacement items as you grow. In addition, you only have to pay £15 per cadet each month which covers all of the activities that are available at the unit. This includes kayaking, canoeing, sailing, power boat training and many other activities.
Cadets may occasionally be required to pay an additional sum if they attend a course at District, Area or National level. Please note that any fees you pay are heavily subsidised as we are a charity and therefore get the majority of our funds through fundraising.
What activities can I do at Guildford?
If you've seen the main Sea Cadets web page then you probably know what activities you can get involved in. However, at Guildford we only have the facilities to offer some of these. During the Summer you can do sailing, canoeing/kayaking and power boating. During the Winter we offer other activities such Seamanship, Navigation, Physical Training, Mechanical Engineering, First Aid, Communications, Expedition Training and BTEC Diploma in Public Services.
However, if you've seen something you like and we don't offer it at Guildford then there is the opportunity for you to go away on a District, Area or National course. This is the beauty of being a Sea Cadet. You can get away from School and Home, meet new people, learn something new and gain some great skills whilst having a load of fun at the same time.
At what times are you open? Will I be expected to attend every week?
We hold unit nights on a Monday and Thursday between 1900 and 2100 (7pm and 9pm). Seniors (Age 12-17) meet on both a Monday and Thursday but Juniors (Age 10-12) only meet on a Thursday.
We are a youth group but not a youth club and we understand when cadets can't make it every week. We hope that when you join you will become a committed member of our group and wan't to come down every night. To get the most out of the Sea Cadets and to get involved in all of our activities it is best to come down as often as you possibly can. However, We do not have strict rules on how often you should attend.
