New Commanding Officer takes post
Sub Lieutenant (SCC) Lorna Greenaway BA Hons RNR was appointed Commanding Officer of Farnham Sea Cadet Unit on 24th November 2008.
S Lt Greenaway has been instrumental in the smooth running of the unit since she joined us from Reading in 2007, holding various posts such as Stores Officer, Training Officer and Courses Officer to name but a few.
She brings with her the experience she gained as CO of Reading and as a regular attender of Area and National Personal Development Courses.
Having recently been awarded her CFM and passed her JOSC, it has been a busy month or so for S Lt Greenaway but this is the environment she enjoys.

Unit embarks 2 Squadrons
T.S. Swiftsure played host to the Surrey Wing ATC Band Competition on Sunday 31st August 2008.
Only two Squadrons were able to enter, 135 (Redhill & Reigate) and 450 (Kenley), unfortunately a third Squadron had to pull out. The Air Cadet Band Competition has a few extra disciplines in addition to those the Sea Cadets are used to when competing as a band. As well as Dress Inspection, Solo Drummer, Solo Bugler and Arena Display, there are also sections for Percussion, Ensemble and Fanfare.
Lt Milligan, S/Lt Greenaway and CPO Collier were invited to assist the London and South East Region ATC judges in parts of these disciplines.
135(Redhill & Reigate)Sqn had actually arrived at Farnham Unit the previous afternoon, using the parade square to perfect their routine and the main deck and classrooms to finish preparing their uniforms and equipment. After a barbeque, cooked by Swiftsure Staff, they stayed overnight at the HQ.
Their hard work paid off as, with the exception of Solo Bugler, 135(Redhill & Reigate) Sqn won every discipline they entered. The Commanding Officer, Staff and Cadets wish them well at the Regional Competition, held in October.
Extra thanks go to POC Mugridge who gave up her Sunday lie-in to run a nutty bar for those attending the event.

Sponsored Walk
Cadets and staff from T.S. Swiftsure took part in a ten mile sponsored walk to raise funds for the unit and to help pay for a day out organised by the Senior Cadets.
They set off from the unit at 10.30 on Sunday 17th August to complete the ten mile circular route through the Surrey Countryside, with a stop for lunch at the five mile mark.
Everyone returned to the Unit by 15.00, looking none the worse for their long walk although some were thinking they may have stiff legs by the morning.
Well done to all who took part.

Area Sailing Regatta
Two cadets from T.S. Swiftsure represented Surrey District at the Southern Area Sailing Regatta, held in Portsmouth on 5th July.
A/C Parrot in the Pico Class and O/C Harvey-Nevin in the Topper Class led the challenge in less than ideal conditions.
A/C Parrot did extremely well in his class and won Gold, putting him in position to attend the Area Race Training weekend and confirm his place representing the Area at the National Sailing Regatta, to be held for the first time in Northern Ireland. O/C Harvey-Nevin will also be at the training weekend as, due to the weather, the Topper class was undecided.
Good luck to both cadets

Farnham Drill Squad at National Competition
Farnham Sea Cadets Drill team achieved an excellent 4th place overall at the National Drill Competition, held at HMS Raleigh, Torpoint over the weekend of 25th to 27th April.
The team arrived at HMS Raleigh late on Friday evening due to some snags with the transport and after a very short sleep, prepared for the oncoming competition under the guidance of S/Lt Greenaway and with the help of the Unit Staff that had travelled to the event.
At 08:30 the team entered the East Drill Shed to be inspected by the National Dress Judges. After this they marched across to the West Drill Shed to give their display in the Arena. Unfortunately there were some problems at the main gate and the parents who had travelled all the way to Torpoint missed the performance.
Farnham Sea Cadets Unarmed Squad were second in the dress inspection and fourth place overall, which is a tremendous achievement for the Cadets who have only been training together for a few months.
The Commanding Officer and all the Unit Staff would like to congratulate the cadets and thank them for all their hard work and dedication for this event.
