Hiring the Unit HQ

Once the repairs and refurbishments are completed, the Unit will once again be available for hire.

The headquarters building has a very large main hall and is equipped with a fully stocked licenced bar and a large kitchen. Tables and chairs are also available for use of hirers.

Unfortunately, we are unsure of the completion date for the refurbishments, especially to the toilets, and we are therefore undable to give available dates at this time.

We will endevour to complete the works as soon as possible. Please check the website regularly to keep yourself informed of developments.

Adult volunteers

Calling all adults!
We greatly value our adult volunteers, without whom the organisation could not function, and support and train them, whatever their previous experience and skills.

There are opportunities for both teaching the Cadets in the enormous variety of subjects that we offer, and also supporting their activities via Parents’ and Supporters’ Associations and Unit Management Committees. We need administrators and DIY experts; people willing to run the snack bar and others to drive the minibus; canoeists and IT enthusiasts. If you’ve got a skill, we can find an outlet for it. And you can even pick up some new skills and qualifications yourself along the way!

The financial support that we receive from the Royal Navy enables us to offer our uniformed volunteers a number of days' training pay each year.

It doesn't matter whether you’ve got previous experience dealing with young people or not - we're just looking for willing volunteers who want to be part of the team and enjoy the satisfaction of seeing Cadets develop and mature. As you’d expect, all our volunteers are rigorously vetted.

Contact the Commanding Officer for information on how you can help.

Unit Management Committee

All Sea Cadet Units are individual Registered Charities set up to work with young people aged 12-18 (Juniors 10-12) by providing nautically based activities and training with a distinctly ‘naval’ feel.

As a Charity it is a requirement to have Trustees who oversee the business and management of the Unit, and in the Sea Cadets these responsibilities are carried out by the Unit Management Committee (UMC). This means that the UMC is responsible for the day-to-day management of the charity, which is in essence like running a small business.

The UMC needs volunteers too, especially professional people with management expertise, or experience of fund-raising and charities. For more information go to:

New UMC Members are always needed to help support the Unit -

Parents and Friends Association

The Unit also has a Parents and Friends Association, who's aims are to organise and support fundraising functions previously agreed with the UMC, assist with the day to day running of the Unit in such areas as canteen manning, social events, HQ maintenance etc and to take a practical interest in the Unit as a whole.

The P&FA is made up of parents and close relatives of Staff and Cadets past and present, those who provide regular financial and material support but who are not members of the UMC, and Professional advisers and skilled workers providing a service to the Unit who are
not members of the UMC.

We always need new members of the Parents and Friends Association so if you would like to help our Unit in any way

Contact 01252 324001

Chaplains

Chaplains, appointed from Clergy, Lay Readers and others with an Authorised Ministry, work with the Unit to provide moral, spiritual, pastoral guidance and leadership in support of the Cadets and Volunteers alike.

A variety of training is available to all Chaplains, which will give confidence by covering topics that are useful in everyday ministry, as well as any of the roles they may feel able to undertake in the service of their Unit.

Chaplains are expected to serve all faith communities, and followers of any faith or creed are welcome to approach the Unit Chaplain with the assurance that their beliefs will be respected.

Many Units have Chaplains, who are supported and overseen by the Corps Chaplain, Staff Chaplain and Area Chaplains. For more information go to: www.sccheadquarters.com/chaplains
