MARINES ON THE GREEN

A opening display from the Sea Cadet band made up of members from Herne Bay & Dover played whilst PO Farrow marched the cadets though the crowds down the centre pathway to applauses & cheering before halting in front of the RMA, where the Royal Marines band watched from the second floor.
Bandmaster S/Lt Fenn, conducted the band to a fine display of mixed tunes to which Thunderbirds went down really well with the public.
Dover Armed Drill Squad performed a shortened version of their routine, this followed a march off down the Strand to finish the display. This was the first time a military band has marched that direction & route since the bomb.
Once the Royal Marines band had seated in the bandstand and the principle Director of Music ( Portsmouth ), this being his first concert at Deal mentioned how talented the Cadets were and we then got another round of applause, this is something that all cadets and staff can be really proud of.

A total of 25 certificates were recieved by cadets.

WELL DONE TO ALL.

ALSO - DOVER won the Tug of War, the first time in many years.

Also, the staff relay race entered 2 teams.

Male - PO Daz Farrow, PO Phil Hackett, Andy Nye & Dave Tracey.

Female - PO Sarah Butler, CI Sharon Morton, Wendy Driver & Julie Hackett.

Of course the CO did her closing of the games lap on her electric buggy

TRI-ANGLE AWARDS

The unit was invited by Bill Butler, the Deal & Dover youth & Community officer at the Winter Gardens at Margate.

The Drill squad have during the past few weeks been learning a drill routine without words of command. This being a much skilled practice routine where timings of drill movements are performed to music.

Dover's Armed Drill & Continuity Drill squad perfromed in front of approx 750 people to the sound of ' Thunderbirds ' , it was amazing to hear the all the persons present start clapping within 15 seconds of the music playing.

AREA DRILL COMPETITION 2008

Armed Guard - Runners up Southern Area

This year’s Southern area drill competition took our unit two attempts as the original day was cancelled by a heavy fall of snow, making the surface unsafe for the guards to display their skills.
So, we were told that we were to attend the following weekend, with not much to arrange, a early start and we get to HMS Excellent in good time.
Once the dress inspection was marked and out of the way, we could get down to business and show off our routine in armed drill.
The routine went as smoothly as could be, the presentation took longer than expected with some extra time added to verify the judges mark.
This led to West Kent beating East Kent by just 0.8 of a mark. WE WILL WIN NEXT YEAR.

E-mail from the District Officer
Hi All
Please pass on my warmest congratulations and sincere thanks to everyone who contributed towards the superb results achieved at the Area Drill & Piping on Sunday. These are probably the best overall results that East Kent District have had in this competition for many years and are fully deserved by all, after the all round effort that has been put in by everyone concerned. Its a little unfortunate that the change of date forced the withdrawal of the Colour Party and Piping teams, as the results could have been even better.
Individual congratulations go to the three squad commanders, for one District to take all of these awards in one year like this must be a special achievement.
I would like to say a special thank you to the three instructors who have trained and prepared the squads so well, Al, Darren and Philip the effort you have all put in to achieve this has not gone un-noticed and is much appreciated by the whole District.
These are excellent results that you can all be proud of, you have represented your units and East Kent District to a very high standard and have been rewarded for your efforts.

BZ to all concerned
Kind Regards
Allan Robbins
District Officer East Kent

JUNIORS & DOVER FIRE SERVICE

The Juniors have had an exciting and fun packed 2 weeks with the Dover Fire & Rescue service.
Week one comprised of a visit from a fire engine and whilst they clambered about the engine learning about the different bits of equipment carried, they also learnt fire safety, including :- persons on fire, fire alarms and how to raise an alarm on sighting a fire.

Week 2, we visited the Dover Fire & Rescue station, as we settled down for a quick lesson, the alarms sounded for a fire call, which was quickily stopped due to a stand down.
We learnt about what a fire is and the FIRE TRIANGLE and colours of fire extinguishers, their contents and the types of fire they are used on. As we were clever in answering the questions, we were then led out into the training yard for some fun.
A fire engine had it's engine running and a couple of firemen had rigged up a road cone with a football on the top of it some 15 meters away from the engine. The object of our exercise was for each of us to use the hose and knock the football off in the shortest time.
Just at the end of our visit, the crew were called out to a report of some smoke in a nearby road. We got our photo taken with a fireman before saying thank you and we left.

A SAD FAREWELL

The unit said a sad parting farewell to PO Jacqui Hopper, who has left the unit due to family commitments.

Miss Hopper has worked extremely hard this year getting every entry a well deserved pass in their piping exams & also the unit winning the district piping competition.

We wish her well & the very best of luck for the future.

Sunday, whilst the cadets were marching to breakfast, the heavens opened during LOTS of the white cold stuff. It was decided to cancel the competition as other units and some of the judges could not attend as some of the major roads were block getting into Portsmouth.
SO , It's round 2 and we are going back down this Sunday for another crack at it.

Speech by the Deputy Mayor
“I would like to thank the sea cadets for all their help they have given the town of Dover at various functions.
Your presence and smartness is always welcome. we have been pleased to see you at the regatta and the mayor of Dover’s ball, so I will look forward to selecting my cadet, and I look back with fond memories on the support that I have received from my cadet on previous occasions when I was the mayor of Dover.

Your involvement on remembrance Sunday, they have always been special. Concerning remembrance Sunday, you will have noticed the work that the town council is doing, having purchased our war memorial. We are now looking after it, very well and working closely with the British Legion for the poppy collection.

I understand that your band is under development and once completed it will be lovely to see them performing at these events.

Being a cinque port town with a long sea faring tradition, it’s nice to have a navel connection via the sea cadets to remind people how big Dover is in the sea industry.

I would like to say a special thank you to your officers and helpers. Such volunteers are vital to enable you, the young people and our next generation to enjoy and benefit your excellent hobby.

Once again I would like to give my thanks to you do for this town and its people.

Thank you for inviting me. “
